Polar Bear Blog – "one of the best cub years in at least a decade"
Yesterday, we drove the ice road to Tuktoyaktuk. It is still -30C up here, unseasonably cold, the Inuvialuit (western Inuit) are not overly thrilled, it is hunting time. The hunters up in Tuktoyaktuk are having a tough time getting at polar bears this year. Some years the sea ice is good and other years, like this one, the sea freezes rough and travel is almost impossible.
...I was chatting with Chuck Gruben, one of the top hunters in the area, and he mentioned that he thinks this is one of the best cub years in at least a decade. He said it is still a strange year as they are not seeing many ringed seals – likely due to the cold and heavy ice on the coast. They see bearded seals but this is not really a prime target for mothers and cubs. Still, it should be a good year for bears, provided it warms up a bit!
New Hockey Stick Sent to the Permanent Penalty Box | Heartlander Magazine
Wow! According to the author of the paper himself, the very portion of the paper alarmists and the media have been proclaiming as the climatic equivalent of the Zombie Apocalypse "cannot be considered representative of global temperature changes." So all we are left with is a temperature reconstruction that shows temperatures by 1900 A.D. had sunk to their coldest levels since the last ice age epoch ended 11,000 years ago. Perhaps maybe a little twentieth century global warming may have been just what the planet needed after all.

Dyson: Climatologists are no Einsteins
Needless to say, my description of the situation of the "hardcore alarmed climatology" was way too kind because they don't even verify the single only "calculated" result – the climate sensitivity. When it differs by a factor of 3 from the observations, they just don't care. So they don't predict anything. They have absolutely no data – no "threats" for their pet ideas – that could direct their construction and improvement of the theories.

"It's certainly true that carbon dioxide is good for vegetation," Dyson said. "About 15 percent of agricultural yields are due to CO2 we put in the atmosphere. From that point of view, it's a real plus to burn coal and oil."
In fact, there's more solid evidence for the beneficial effects of CO2 than the negative effects, he said. So why does the public hear only one side of this debate? Because the media do an awful job of reporting it.
"They're absolutely lousy," he said of American journalists. "That's true also in Europe. I don't know why they've been brainwashed."

The biggest possible benefit for the UK appears to be reduced winter mortality - Defra predicts there could be between 5,000 and 24,000 fewer premature deaths from the cold.
But on balance, it's doubtful the benefits of climate change will outweigh the risks in the UK - even below two degrees of warming, according to Defra's report. While we may be experiencing better wheat yields in the 2080s, it looks like there will be plenty to worry about: Defra says possible impacts will water shortages, and an extra 1,000 to 6,000 summer deaths.

Can Democrats hide by claiming that climate change hysteria was an innocent mistake? It was never a credible story. Democrats, journalists, and liberal commentators went way out on a limb. The End of an Illusion | RealClearPolitics
So here's the state of play of climate science a third of a decade into the global warming hysteria. They don't have a reliable baseline of global temperature measurements that would allow them to say what is normal and natural and what isn't. Their projections about future warming are demonstrably failing to predict the actual data. And now they have been caught, yet again, fudging the numbers and manipulating the graphs to show a rapid 20th-century warming that they want to be true but which they can't back up with actual evidence.
A theory with this many holes in it would be have been thrown out long ago, if not for the fact that it conveniently serves the political function of indicting fossil fuels as a planet-destroying evil and allowing radical environmentalists to put a modern, scientific face on their primitivist crusade to shut down industrial civilization.
But can't we all just stop calling this "science" now?

His own reading of data, Easterbrook said, showed there were 20 periods of global cooling and heating over the past 500 years with the most recent cooling trend beginning in 1998 and likely to last up to 25 or 30 years. He asserted that his work was peer reviewed and indicated that he could provide that information to Ranker.

AMS has a Green Meetings initiatives (http://www.ametsoc.org/meet/greenconferenceguidelines.html), 2. Large shifts to videoconferencing are not completely immune as energy is still required to support increased computing/IT requirements for these activities, and 3. Videoconferencing may be highly appropriate for smaller committee and board type meetings but not large scientific meetings, which was the point of my aforementioned blog on the Front Page.
"This assessment tool melds computer modeling with expert opinion in a way not often realized," said Balogh...Among the commonalities seen among the more vulnerable species was a strong orientation to the coastline exposing them to climate-related changes in coastal disturbances linked to storminess, erosion, and ice cover. Generalist species (those that can adapt to a wide variety of conditions) were less affected and, in some cases, predicted to thrive in a warming climate. In a new study, James Hansen pushes nuclear power as saving more lives than it has harmed | Watts Up With That?
Using nuclear power in place of fossil-fuel energy sources, such as coal, has prevented some 1.8 million air pollution-related deaths globally and could save millions of more lives in coming decades, concludes a study. One Weird Trick for Getting Republicans To Care About Climate | Mother Jones
[English major Chris Mooney] New survey results suggest that with the right spin, even Republicans can be convinced to support climate action.
After all this time, when the continuation of industrial civilization itself is on the table, shouldn’t there be some palpable, observable effect of the disaster that we are supposed to sacrifice our futures in order to avoid? Shouldn’t the doom-sayers be saying “We told you so!” backed up by a torrent of youtube videos of submerged locales and media stories reminding us about how it used to snow in Massachusetts?Scientists on climate change: Er, never mind!
Climate panic, after all, is fear of dramatic, life-altering climate changes, not about tenths of a degree. We are told that we must “take action right now before it’s Too Late!” That doesn’t mean: before it’s too late to avoid a Spring that comes a week earlier or summer heat records of 103 degrees instead of 102. It’s to fend off utter disaster that we needed the Kyoto Treaty, carbon taxes, and Priuses.
The authors of the study quietly admitted last weekend that their claim of surging temperatures can’t be supported by their data.Three iconic graphs showing the climate fix we’re in. – Significant Figures by Peter Gleick
The establishment media outlets that reported the study with such fanfare have been largely silent on the stunning admission, although the Washington Post did report today that there is now a “controversy” over the data.

In addition to a charming photo of Steffen enjoying a gropup hug with a bevy of young warmists (above), the Climate Commission web pages describe him as a "climate change expert and researcher". So how can entirely typical meteorologic conditions be overlooked, or the difference between climate and weather confused?

Violent Environmental Problems With Wind Turbine Operation: From Avian Mortality to Catastrophic Failure — MasterResource
Renewable energy wind turbines as electricity sources possess extreme environmental problems not found in their renewable energy rival–solar photovoltaic. These problems are due to rotation of 130-foot or more long, thirteen-ton turbine blades with tip speeds of 200 miles per hour.BBC Environment Correspondent Matt McGrath states Dr James E Hansen was a leading voice...in er....the science of "Global Warming"! | Climate Realists
An unavoidable problem of wind turbines is killing flying creatures.
I'm not so sure this summary from the BBC of Dr James E Hansen retirement announcement has done them any favours. The area that may backfire is that their Environment Correspondent Matt McGrath mentions the term "Global Warming" instead of "Climate Change" and at the end of the article they (BBC) have acknowledged world temperatures have remained at a "standstill", thus agreeing there is no "Global Warming" currently going on.
Today, Frontiers posted a note to readers on top of the paper’s abstract:Arctic to experience explosive "greening” while Antarctic sea ice grows to record levels - both due to global warmingThis article, first published by Frontiers on 18 March 2013, has been the subject of complaints. Given the nature of some of these complaints, Frontiers has provisionally removed the link to the article while these issues are investigated, which is being done as swiftly as possible and which Frontiers management considers the most responsible course of action. The article has not been retracted or withdrawn. Further information will be provided as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.

In summary, Dr Marcott created the perception of a spike in temperatures the same way Michael Mann did in that first hockey stick paper that featured so prominently in the third IPCC report, by comparing apples and oranges… or perhaps best described as grafting an apple onto the end of a banana.Turkish president visits Latvia under heavy snowfall
“A cyclone (hurricane) has brought heavy snowfall to Latvia and the snow will last for some time,” says reader Argiris Diamantis. You begin to suspect something is really wrong when the first guy on screen to say something about climate is Richard Muller, of Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature Project fame, who managed to convert himself from a climate change denialist to a lukewarmer by arduously and noisily rediscovering what every working climate scientist already knew to be true. What Muller has to say about climate is that burning fossil fuels will cause the Earth to warm by about 2 degrees (“if the calculations are right”), but it’s going to be too expensive to stop it so we’ll just learn to live with it. There are so many things wrong with Muller’s statement that I hardly know where to begin. First, it is far from clear that a 2 degree warmer world is one that we can adapt to
SWITCH is made to appeal to fans of an “all of the above” energy strategy, but it never confronts the fact that if we want to preserve a livable climate, “all” simply cannot include continued (let alone expanded) use of fossil fuels for very much longer. The biggest challenge we face is not learning how to extract every last scrap of fossil fuel, but learning how to leave most of it in the ground...from here on in, coal is all bad, and the less of it anybody burns, the better.
...SWITCH never tells you that China could attain the standard of living of France without increasing its emissions at all, just by increasing the carbon efficiency of its economy to the current French level...The fact that we will all pay for the consequences of a wrecked climate never figures into any of the costs mentioned in this movie.
...the sooner SWITCH disappears from the public discourse, the better.

With the knowledge that "global warming" stopped at least 16 years ago, it is becoming increasingly difficult to understand why a charlatan like Stern is still invited to speak as an "expert" at IMF and other similar gatherings.
