Climate hoax promoter Gavin Schmidt takes fossil-fueled trip to Kentucky for NASA-funded climate hoax symposium; suggests that CO2 might cause temperatures to rise 10 degrees in the next 88 years

Computer models help scientists make sense of complex climate | The Courier-Journal | courier-journal.com
Computer models show Kentucky and Indiana by 2100 might be about 10 degrees warmer, assuming nothing is done to slow the burning of fossil fuels and other human causes of climate change, a NASA climate scientist told a Bellarmine University audience on Saturday.

Northern regions of the globe would warm even more, said Gavin Schmidt, the keynote speaker at a day-long climate science symposium hosted by Bellarmine University’s Center for Regional Environmental Studies.

“That would be a whole ’nother world,” Schmidt said. “That’s a very, very large change.”

More than 100 people attended the symposium, which funded by a grant from NASA.

GM discounts Volt, showing that electric cars must be cheaper for people to buy them | StarTribune.com
GM executives have conceded from the start that they were losing money on the Volt, and that was before the big discounts.

Now the losses could be even higher. It costs $60,000 to $75,000 to build a Volt, including development, manufacturing and raw materials, estimates Sandy Munro, president of Munro & Associates, a Troy, Mich., a company that analyzes vehicle production expenses for automakers. Much of the cost comes from an expensive combination of two power systems — electric and gasoline. With a sticker price of $40,000, minus the $10,000 the company pays in incentives, GM gets roughly $30,000 for every Volt. So it could be losing at least $30,000 per car.

IMO, Watts handled himself very well in the on-air interview and also in the extended written interview. Nothing that he said was unreasonable. It is rather bizarre that on this particular show, I came across as the ‘denier’ and Watts as the ‘lukewarmer.’

The outrage over Watts seems to be not so much what he said, as over his being given any airtime at all. On a program discussing climate science, is Watts the appropriate spokesperson? I would say not. However, on a program discussing the public debate over climate science, Watts should be front and center. His blog WUWT has far and away the largest traffic of any climate blog in the world (as per Alexa). As such, Watts is a figure of central importance in the public debate on climate change. To those who don’t like this fact, I advise you to take the time to understand why WUWT is so successful and maybe you will learn something about the public debate on climate change.

Flashback: Hugo Chavez gets thunderous ovation in Copenhagen with anti-capitalism remarks
There is an old proverb that says you can tell a lot about a person by the people they associate with. This has never been more apparent than at the Copenhagen climate summit. There, dictator Hugo Chavez got several standing ovations for attacking capitalism and wealthy nations. During his speech he said, "our revolution seeks to help all people…socialism, the other ghost that is probably wandering around this room, that's the way to save the planet, capitalism is the road to hell....let's fight against capitalism and make it obey us." That comment nearly brought down the house, but what would you expect from a bunch of people who believe in climate change theories that have been fabricated for decades?

Another Spectacular Green Failure | Via Meadia
Greens have an odd knack for developing useless and expensive government policies. Ethanol, ballyhooed as a way to reduce greenhouse gasses, raises food prices for the poor and, in the U.S., actually increases greenhouse gas emissions at great cost. With an election looming, John Kerry backs away a bit from the global warming hoax: "There are ways to do fossil fuels responsibly"

John Kerry on why we need fossil fuels (for now) and climate action (for real!) | Grist
[Q] Why has this issue [the global warming hoax] fallen off the Democratic agenda?

A. For several reasons. No. 1, because huge amounts of money were spent to purposely discredit the facts. Some of the coal industry, some of your old power-plant owners, put money into branding cap-and-trade as cap-and-tax. The British university emails were exploited by the opponents very effectively, and a kind of pejorative set in about climate science as a result. I think the climate issue lost 20 or 30 points of support in the public arena.

So once the House of Representatives passed cap-and-trade, this onslaught of negative activity took place which had an impact. The people who claimed it was a hoax, nothing more than a liberal conspiracy to have a government takeover, spent a lot of money scaring our colleagues. And that’s what happened, they scared them. They created a certain credibility [problem] that was never answered. There was no counter.
...I’m the most ardent advocate up here for doing something about climate change, but you’re nevertheless gonna have to use fossil fuels. The question is, can you use them in clean and manageable ways? The answer is, Yes, you can, if you make the right sort of requirements.
...There are ways to do fossil fuels responsibly.
...the folks down in New Orleans understand [that CO2 caused Katrina?].
..Can you share any insights about [Romney's] former life as an advocate of global-warming solutions?

U.S. District Judge Philip Pro, sitting on the panel by designation from Nevada, highlighted the lack of standing in a concurring opinion.

"Kivalina has not met the burden of alleging facts showing Kivalina plausibly can trace their injuries to appellees," Pro wrote.

"By Kivalina's own factual allegations, global warming has been occurring for hundreds of years and is the result of a vast multitude of emitters worldwide whose emissions mix quickly, stay in the atmosphere for centuries, and, as a result, are undifferentiated in the global atmosphere. Further, Kivalina's allegations of their injury and traceability to appellees' activities is not bounded in time. Kivalina does not identify when their injury occurred nor tie it to appellees' activities within this vast time frame. Kivalina nevertheless seeks to hold these particular appellees, out of all the greenhouse gas emitters who ever have emitted greenhouse gases over hundreds of years, liable for their injuries."

"It is one thing to hold that a state has standing to pursue a statutory procedural right granted to it by Congress in the CAA to challenge the EPA's failure to regulate greenhouse gas emissions which incrementally may contribute to future global warming," he added. "It is quite another to hold that a private party has standing to pick and choose amongst all the greenhouse gas emitters throughout history to hold liable for millions of dollars in damages."

The Arctic ice is shrinking in ways that spell danger for all of us, permafrost is melting threatening the release of vast deposits of methane (a very powerful greenhouse gas), oceans are acidifying, food production is threatened, and around the world lives are lost in extreme events from floods to fires to mudslides to tropical storms and tornadoes. We should be talking about how we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions as fast as possible in hopes of avoiding ever-more-likely runaway global warming. I don’t like thinking about- or worse, talking about, the worst case scenarios of global warming. But former French President Sarkozy was right: the survival of human civilization is at risk...Yesterday, I couldn’t finish asking a question due to the heckling of the NDP caucus. What was the trigger for otherwise civil folks, many of them people I love, to act out so rudely? I had the effrontery to mention that there had once been a plan to meet Kyoto targets.

A PBS NewsHour global warming report that allowed a climate change contrarian to "counterbalance" mainstream scientific opinion is worth criticizing, according to PBS Ombudsman Michael Getler, who said he received hundreds of emails and calls about the program.

Getler said he is penning a column on the issue that is likely to be posted late today or Monday, and hinted it will be critical.

"There's just a lot of...hundreds of emails about it," Getler said when asked why he is writing about the issue. "Commentary about it all over and it's interesting."

Getler declined to offer specific views on the NewsHour report, which aired last Monday. But when asked if he has found elements to criticize, he said: "Oh yeah, of course there's material to be critical about."

When Media Matters first called this morning, Getler said he had been contacted by many viewers since Monday about the issue: "It's what everyone's calling about, the global warming thing."

My advice for encounters with rabid warmist Jeff "The house all of humanity lives on is on fire" Masters: Back away slowly, don't make eye contact

Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog : Earth's attic is on fire: Arctic sea ice bottoms out at a new record low | Weather Underground
Antarctica has actually been warming in recent years. In fact, the oceans surrounding Antarctica have warmed faster than the global trend, and there has been accelerated melting of ocean-terminating Antarctic glaciers in recent years as a result of warmer waters eating away the glaciers...To me, seeing the record Arctic sea ice loss of 2012 is like discovering a growing fire burning in Earth's attic. It is an emergency that requires immediate urgent attention. If you remove an area of sea ice 43% the size of the Contiguous U.S. from the ocean, it is guaranteed to have a significant impact on weather and climate. The extra heat and moisture added to the atmosphere as a result of all that open water over the pole may already be altering jet stream patterns in fall and winter, bringing an increase in extreme weather events. This year's record sea ice loss also contributed to an unprecedented melting event in Greenland. Continued sea ice loss will further increase melting from Greenland, contributing to sea level rise and storm surge damages. Global warming doubters tell us to pay attention to Earth's basement--the Antarctic--pointing out (incorrectly) that there is no fire burning there. But shouldn't we be paying attention to the steadily growing fire in our attic? The house all of humanity lives on is on fire. The fire is certain to spread, since we've ignored it for too long. It is capable of becoming a raging fire that will burn down our house, crippling civilization, unless we take swift and urgent action to combat it.
Businesses attack California's cap-and-trade auction - Business - The Sacramento Bee
Just weeks before California embarks on a historic effort to reduce greenhouse gases, regulators and business executives are at war over whether it will work.

The rift was on full display Thursday. Dozens of factory managers, refinery workers and others descended on a California Air Resources Board meeting in Sacramento to demand changes in the state's cap-and-trade carbon market.

They said the market, which kicks off Nov. 14, will impose a $1 billion-plus annual tax that will curb economic growth and chase companies out of the state.

"What we're concerned about is keeping the jobs," said Lisa Bowman, an employee at a Phillips 66 refinery near Los Angeles.

Obviously being only a psychologist Lewandowsky has nothing useful to tell us as to whether the menace posed by greenhouse gas emissions has been overblown, or not. Let those global warming dollars flow | Bad Astronomy | Discover Magazine
One of the weirdest (and by that I mean most ridiculous) claims I’ve heard from global warming deniers is the idea that somehow there is a cabal of scientists making up all the information we see about climate change.

First, scientists aren’t very good at that sort of collusion. As Ben Franklin said, "Three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead." Scientists as a rule tend to abhor misleading people or out-and-out lying. And those who do tend to be caught by the peer-review process.

Anyway, ignoring the idea that tens of thousands of scientists are playing a Jedi mind trick on the rest of us without a single one of them betraying the secret (and no, Climategate and its sequel don’t count since that was all trumped up smoke and mirrors by the denier crowd), the real reason this claim is ludicrous is because of its supernova-bright irony: a lot of the deniers can be traced to having fossil fuel funding...Mind you, this isn’t supposed to be evidence that global warming deniers are paid frauds. It’s simply using Occam’s Razor, asking which makes more sense. Taken that way, it just shows the idea that scientists are on the wrong side of this is really silly.
The slaughter of polar bears that rarely gets mentioned (ca. 1890-1930) | polarbearscience
In summary, commercial whalers and fur traders slaughtered a huge number of polar bears world-wide, especially between 1890 to 1930, when more than 60,000 bears were harvested over a 40 year period. Polar bears share this history with many other marine mammals – they are not unique in that respect. However, in contrast to those other species, the modern literature on polar bears is largely silent about that black period of its history (except for Stirling 2011), to the detriment of modern polar bear research.

It is hard not to wonder why that is the case.

Warmist strategy: When Arctic sea ice extent increases, claim that sea ice volume is "much more useful"; when Arctic sea ice extent decreases, try not to mention sea ice volume

Thinning ice probably explains record low Arctic sea ice coverage | Carbon Brief
Sea ice extent has undergone a dramatic decline this year, but it doesn't necessarily follow that the volume of sea ice has declined dramatically.
...Axel Schweiger, principal oceanographer at the Polar Science Center told us:
"With respect to ice volume from PIOMAS for this summer (and we are not finished), the change from 2011 to 2012 looks actually much less dramatic than the ice extent change and rather in line with previous year to year losses."
2010:  RealClimate: An icy retreat
However, in March temperatures suddenly dropped for a couple of weeks, in particular in parts of the Barents Sea and in parts of the Beaufort Sea. This in turn lead to the formation of a thin ice cover in these regions, which caused a marked increase in observed sea-ice extent. For the measurement of this extent, it doesn’t matter at all how thick the ice is: any ice, however thin, contributes to sea-ice extent. Therefore, only considering a possible “recovery” of just the extent of Arctic sea ice always remains somewhat superficial, since sea-ice extent contains no information on the thickness of the ice. A much more useful measure for the state of Arctic sea ice is therefore the total sea-ice volume.

How the temperature datasets tell us extra CO2 has little effect « Tallbloke's Talkshop
But how come this energy being emitted into the atmosphere from the oceans isn’t being trapped by the extra co2 and then re-radiated back down to the surface and warming it up?

The answer is that it is trying its best, but the effect is much less powerful in relation to the effect of a more active sun in the warming period and a less active sun now, than the warmist theoreticians believed. This is because they didn’t take into account the effect of the active sun causing diminishing cloud cover, and so the sea surface and ground is cooling and the heat is escaping back to space now the sun has become much less active, but is keeping the troposphere at cloud level warm on its way.

“The loss of summer sea ice has led to unusual warming of the Arctic atmosphere, that in turn impacts weather patterns in the Northern Hemisphere, that can result in persistent extreme weather such as droughts, heat waves and flooding,” NSIDC scientist Dr. Julienne Stroeve told Greenpeace in a press release.

Wednesday morning, a group of climate scientists and activists met at a Greenpeace International panel in New York to strategize on potential responses to the changing Arctic climate...

[Hansen] attributed the rise in carbon dioxide concentrations largely to the burning of fossil fuels. "It's crystal clear. If we burn all the fossil fuels, we create certain disaster," he said.

Despite the fact that "we have a planetary emergency," Hansen explained, "It's hard for the public to realize, because they stick their head out the window and don't see much going on."

Having just witnessed climate change in action on an Arctic campaign, Greenpeace International head Kumi Naidoo professed, "I am shit scared."

How does that square with recent comments by Nasa’s James Hansen, “We are certainly seeing climate change in action…This year has been exceptionally unusual throughout the United States.” Writing in this morning’s Guardian Connie Hedegaard, the European Commissioner for Climate Action, says that ‘extreme’ weather is the new normal: “We are now confident about linking individual events to climate change,” she maintains.

Perhaps she should read the Nature editorial.
