About the euro, and global warming, it turns out the 'thought criminals' were right - Telegraph

But in each of these important fields where dissent has been treated as thoughtcrime, the world has moved on - and very much as the heretics were urging for so long. The global warming scare has not continued to unfold as projected by those bent computer models on which it rested. Temperatures have not risen as predicted, the ice caps aren't melting, nor sea levels rising, nor hurricanes, droughts and heatwaves intensifying as we were assured they would.

maribo: Dispatch from Kiribati: Can you "see" sea level rise?

I can point to many shorelines that don't look the same as they did seven years ago. The long answer, however, is that the change is quite often not what you might expect on a planet with a rising ocean. In many cases, there's more land.  The reason is that shorelines are constantly changing in response to natural variability and human disturbance, in addition to the global trend. That's the subject of my recent article in EOS and our video "Lessons of Bikeman".

Why Joe Manchin Flees From Barack Obama | Power Line

The Obama administration's record is terrible on pretty much every issue, but energy is one of the worst. Obama appointed a Secretary of Energy whose avowed goal was to raise the price of gasoline. Obama himself promised to make the price of electricity "skyrocket." Unfortunately, those wishes have come true. One especially damaging aspect of Obama's War on American Energy is his effort to drive coal-fired power plants–the nation's biggest source of electric power–out of business.

The Republican National Committee put out this short video to remind Ohio voters of the Obama/Biden administration's awful record when it comes to coal

Michael Mann takes unnecessary fossil-fueled flight to California?

The highlight of the early morning sessions was a presentation by Nobel Laureate and renowned climate change expert Dr. Michael Mann, who provided a historical perspective on climate change and how it could ultimately affect water levels and the environment as a whole if left unchecked.

Mann also discussed how the biggest obstacle to reversing climate change is often human rather than environmental, whether it's the resistance of the masses to change their everyday practices, or scientists who'd rather swim upstream for the sake of notoriety than deal with the science at hand.

"We can't downplay the importance of what has been an extremely well-organized, well-funded disinformation effort that has been financed by fossil-fuel industry groups, front groups who advocate for their interests to cloud the public discourse on this issue," Mann said. "Some of the attacks against the science are actually thinly veiled attacks against the scientists who are just like me out there doing research. They use words like 'hysteria' and 'fraud' and try to paint this picture of climate scientists as being part of some sort of conspiracy to take away their liberty to emit CO2 into the atmosphere. I don't think real people worry about that."

As for those real people, Mann said, finding solutions to climate change is often a matter of doing the things they know they should be doing every day to help the environment, but on a large-scale basis, which often takes some sort of outside influence.

"There are things we all know we ought to be doing," Mann said. "They're all the things we ought to be doing anyway because they're good for the environment, they're good for our health and they're good for our personal economies. But the sad fact is that we often need to be prodded. There are so many challenges in our lives, and it's easy to sort of shove these things aside as this long-term problem that's way off in the future. That's where it become essential that policy-makers help us establish incentives."

Is the holocaust denial/climate change denial comparison apt? : denialism blog

I don't contribute to the literature, and I don't have the technical expertise needed to challenge real climate scientists that are the true experts in this field. I am something of an expert in crankery though, so when you have cranks like Christopher Monckton, who asserts he's a member of parliament when he's not (they even had to send him a letter telling him to stop), who routinely makes the same debunked arguments over and over, and makes other bizarre claims like that he's discovered a cure for HIV, then I'm going to weigh in and call bullshit. Part of the problem is the Dunning-Kruger effect, people who are incompetent have a great deal of difficulty recognizing competence in others, while inflating estimates of their own competence. Cranks and denialists are probably incapable of judging whether someone is a legitimate source or authority. This is where crank magnetism comes from, as long as an "expert" agrees with them, their otherwise ludicrous views and behavior have no bearing. Intellectual consistency and expertise in the field in question has no relevance in their eyes as long as they spout out BS that fits with their ideological biases... Climate change denialism does not meet the standards for legitimate debate, it relies on conspiracy theories, bogus experts, cherry-picked data, crank journals, and appeals to the almighty.

Is New Green Law Creating More Green for Logging Companies? | NBC Bay Area

While Cap and Trade is being sold as the first step towards reversing global warming, NBC Bay Area's Investigative Unit discovered some critics who point to the very law and say there are loopholes built into it that allow the program to be "gamed" to make some companies millions of dollars without significant benefits to the environment or significant reductions in greenhouse gases.

"You hear the critics," Stock said. "If you're doing business as usual how do the rules improve the environment if you're not taking more carbon out of the air?"

"Right," Young answered. "But you're not doing business as usual. We have very strict rules. You have to grow trees bigger, you have to manage the trees better."

Companies that harvest timber like Sierra Pacific Industries, also known as SPI, admit they stand to gain tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars through carbon offsets.

High chance of Bangladesh sinking under rising sea levels

...a particular example for which Schneider presents some numbers should frighten all of us. For low-lying countries like Bangladesh, one of the critical questions of climate change is how high sea level rise will be. The answer to this actually depends on whether or not the Greenland ice cap melts; this event would release enough water to raise global sea levels about 25 metres (about 80 feet). This would be the end for Bangladesh, sinking perhaps 75% of the country. It would also be the end of most of the world’s coastal cities like New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC and London. Here are Schneider’s estimates of how likely this is:

“For Greenland to irreversibly melt, my own [estimate] would be roughly a 2 to 5% chance that it is already too late and it will happen over the long run. At 1 degree Celsius more warming, I’d raise the odds to 25% ...” (page 274).

So this is the problem of climate science in a nutshell; the likelihood of a major catastrophe like 25 meter sea level rise could be theoretically be as low as 2 to 5%. So in the US, Republican politicians like George W. Bush as well as numerous Democrats whose political campaigns rely on donations from oil and coal companies will always focus on the 2% probability and dismiss climate change as a waste of time. However, for those of us who have not been paid off and can think for ourselves, the rest of the sentence should be shocking: “... and at 2 degrees Celsius to 60%, at 3 degrees Celsius to 90%, and so on” (page 274 continued).

When Chancellor Angela Merkel sacked her environment minister, Norbert Roettgen on May 15th this was not only for his failure as the CDU party’s main candidate in regional elections in North Rhine Westphalia, but, as many observers said, was also because Rottgen was the federal minister responsible for implementing the green energy transition. As political analysts noted, this sacking was probably an attempt by Merkel to blame Röttgen for Germany’s botched energy policies.

Rand Simberg at PJ Media reviews the Yamal story, quoting extensively from yours truly.

But at a minimum [Yamal] should be the final blow to the hockey stick, and perhaps to the very notion that bristlecone pines and larches are accurate thermometers. It should also be a final blow to the credibility of many of the leading lights of climate “science,” but based on history, it probably won’t be, at least among the political class. What it really should be is the beginning of the major housecleaning necessary if the field is to have any scientific credibility, but that may have to await a general reformation of academia itself. It would help, though, if we get a new government next year that cuts off funding to such charlatans, and the institutions that whitewash their unscientific behavior.

Aussie temperature reconstructers redefine Medieval Warm Period as AD1238-AD1267. How prescient was Viking Eric The Red, leading colonists to Greenland more than 240 years prior to the warming of Greenland that made it hospitable and managing to establish settlements and farms to occupy just a 29-year climate window? Must have been some real estate salesman, eh?

Opinion piece at the New York Times suggest that we can prevent catastrophic weather by adjusting our eating habits

Less Meat, Less Global Warming - NYTimes.com

...few people take the role of livestock in producing greenhouse gases seriously enough. Even most climate change experts focus on new forms of energy — which cannot possibly be effective quickly enough or produced on a broad enough scale to avert what may be the coming catastrophe — and often ignore the much easier fix of adjusting our eating habits.

It’s good that we’re eating somewhat less meat, but it still amounts to something just shy of  a staggering 200 pounds per person per year. And no matter how that number changes domestically, on the world scale there’s troubling movement in the wrong direction. Meat consumption in China is now twice what it is in the United States (in 1978 it was only one-third).

Are climate scientists a self-selecting set of climate activists? | Australian Climate Madness

The majority of climate scientists are funded by governments which are committed (to different degrees) to taking "action" on climate change. At no point do I allege that people are changing their views because of the funding they receive (something that I do not believe happens on either side of the debate), merely that they are a self-selecting group based on prior beliefs. Which would explain why environmental and climate science departments are full of AGW believers.

And it would also explain why environmental journalists are AGW believers too. If you weren't, why would you become an environmental journalist in the first place?

It's the final extrapolation of confirmation bias - you choose your entire career based on your beliefs.

Rio + 20, Spiked » Climate Resistance

I’m predicting that Rio will go the way of Copenhagen… It will again expose the incoherence of environmentalism, and the self-serving agendas of those present, but will be rescued at the last moment by some kind of fudge, as was found at Durban. But perhaps I will be surprised.

Another thing I think will happen is an attempt to reinvent the environmental scare stories of yesteryear, such as population growth and resource depletion. The climate thing is looking worn out at the moment — not quite a busted flush, but climate alarmism is passé.

Cancellation for field study in climate-change project | News | The Engineer

A field study for a geoengineering project aiming to mitigate the effects of climate change has been cancelled.

As the World Warms: Trees and Shrubs Proliferating in Sweden

they state that the change in shrubs and small trees they observed is "consistent with anticipated changes due to climate change and reduced herbivory," which change in climate, in their words, "could be interpreted as an ongoing natural re-establishment of plants at higher altitudes due to a natural increase in the temperature since the 'Little Ice Age' (Kammer et al., 2007)."

Tree Growth in the Swedish Sub-Arctic: Setting New Records

Hedenas et al. write that in spite of the increased browsing pressure provided by an increasing reindeer population over the period of their study, as well as periodic outbursts of geometrid moths - which severely defoliated the birch trees in their study area in 2004 (Babst et al., 2010) - "there has been a net increase in biomass - and carbon drawdown - of 19%." As for the cause of this welcome phenomenon, they say "it has been suggested that increased nutrient availability associated with higher soil temperatures, and a longer growing season could underpin increased tree and shrub abundance and biomass in the Arctic (e.g., Chapin, 1983; Weih and Karlsson, 1997; Hartley et al., 1999)," as a result of "a delayed re-expansion of shrubs and trees following the 'Little Ice Age'," as suggested by Grubb (2008). And, of course, we have the ongoing and ever-increasing aerial fertilization and transpiration-reducing effects of the concomitant rise in the atmosphere's CO2 concentration, which must be playing significant roles as well, as the remarkable Greening of the Earth continues.

Dust Deposits at the Bottom of the Aral Sea

As the four researchers explain it, the temporal variations in the dust deposition are consistent with the changes in the "mean atmospheric temperature of the northern hemisphere during the past 2000 years, with low/high annual temperature anomalies corresponding to high/low dust supplies in the Aral Sea sediments, respectively," which finding reinforces the reality of a non-CO2-induced millennial-scale cycling of Earth's surface air temperature, and thus provides no need whatsoever for any greenhouse-gas-induced phenomenon to explain the planet's current level of warmth or when it began.

"heavy shorefast ice has been shown to be associated with devastating declines in pup production for nearshore-breeding ringed seals...polar bear numbers have also crashed dramatically during heavy ice years"

Hudson Bay Ringed Seal Populations Declined Significantly Due to Heavy Ice in the 1990s

In summary, heavy shorefast ice has been shown to be associated with devastating declines in pup production for nearshore-breeding ringed seals in two regions of the Arctic (western Hudson Bay and the Beaufort Sea). These heavy ice conditions are known to have occurred during each decade between the 1970s and the 1990s. Because female polar bears that den close to shore are dependent on nearshore-breeding ringed seals to successfully rear their cubs, polar bear numbers have also crashed dramatically during heavy ice years, although so far this has only been documented in the Beaufort Sea.

Of course, “detrimental actions to the future of our planet”  is a term so broad and sweeping that it can mean essentially anything. Is gas exploration detrimental to the future of our planet? If so, what about someone using more gas than perhaps they should? You can see the extremely problematic implications of this down the road. The guarantee, hitherto, was that personal freedoms and civil rights were guaranteed by the government which could be voted out, or at least protested. But when the laws are set and enforced by the Environmental Security Council of the UN and the local police have no choice but to carry out there orders  - what then?

Four hundred years ago, winter conditions in Manhattan might not have been that different. The Medieval Warming Period around the 12th century had a profound effect on the course of civilization. Today, with another global warming period on the horizon—this one accelerated by human activity—national futures may again be driven by the rapidly changing climate. This time, however, climate change will produce no winners.

...The Medieval Warming Period is believed to have led to the rise of Europe as a political, technological, and colonial superpower. Europe lagged behind all major nations in the world in terms of population, culture, military, and technology before this natural event. The warming climate reduced the swamps on the European continent and opened up more land for agriculture. Subsequently, agricultural production doubled during this period and population growth increased dramatically. Because of the increase in population, Europe entered a period of unprecedented prosperity epitomized by the Renaissance and the great ocean exploration.

Glikson tell us to publish a paper – we say “the heretics have — when will you?” « JoNova: Science, carbon, climate and tax

Glikson says, rightly: “Opinion and “belief” are no substitute for evidence. Those who doubt the basic laws of nature and empirical data are always welcome to submit research to peer review journals…”

To which Jo Nova says to Dr Andrew Glikson, “Skeptics can name 900 papers that support our views. And you still haven’t found that one mystery paper with observations that suggests CO2′s effect will be catastrophic eh? Is there any evidence?

Glikson can name (as he did in our debate) hundreds of papers that are irrelevant, not based on observations, or are based on a logical fallacy. Climate models are not observations of the real world. Glikson’s faith in his theory is unscientific.

Before Glikson demands we disprove him (and we can) he needs to show he has some observations that support him. Until then, man-made global warming is just another religion.

Is There a Bigger Environmental Issue Than Climate Change? Scientists Say Yes. | Wildlife | The Back Forty | KCET

Climate change is a serious issue, but a couple of recent studies remind us that it may not be the biggest threat to life on Earth as we know it. It may in fact be essentially a symptom of a broader problem, one which hasn't gotten nearly as much attention from either green groups or the environmentally oriented press. What's the issue? Loss of biodiversity, also known as extinction. And ignoring it to focus on climate change can have dire consequences, especially in the California desert.

Dr. Charles David Keeling was the Paul Revere of his time, warning the planet of its fate with rising carbon dioxide levels leading to global warming — and the fossil fuel industry has been the primary reason why there has been little change, author Bill McKibben said at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Keeling Memorial Lecture on Monday.

Flannery’s Fantasies

Does anyone seriously believe Tim Flannery anymore? With prediction after prediction he has made failing spectacularly, there would seem little reason to put any stock in anything he says. Remember eight stories of sea level rise, Perth becoming a ghost town, Adelaide running out of water, permanent drought and the Arctic ice cap disappearing in five years? Fortunately, crying wolf so often does tend to inspire some skepticism in some. The reception Flannery received in West Sydney recently is one example. The politicians are even starting to wake up. It is this alarmism that has destroyed a lot of the credibility that environmentalism once had. However, there are those who do take such claims seriously.

Dr Gergis says the scientists have minimised the variability in their model by crunching the data 3,000 different ways.

"What we were able to see is that in 95 per cent of the reconstructions, we actually see that the post-1950 warming observed in the region is unprecedented in the context of the last millennium so it is not dependent on a loss of records back in time or the different combination of record," he said.

Hansen's diatribe -- I choose that word merely as a literal description of the article, which bears no resemblance to an argument -- is noteworthy on three fronts: (1) its tone of angry defiance, suggestive of a man whose instinct, in the face of rational defeat, is to say, "Damn all of you!"; (2) Hansen's attempt to use the Times' friendly confines to double down on the projections of his discredited climate models, without compunction at having no remaining grounds for his claims; and (3) the straightforwardness with which his proposed course of action on this issue proclaims the real, but hitherto half-concealed, purpose of the global climate fraud -- namely, a government takeover of the world economy by means of a proletarian uprising against the "capitalists."

Schmidt’s “Conspiracy Theory”

I find it hard to believe that Schmidt seriously believes that climate scientists have reacted to suspicion by saying "take a look". The pages of Climate Audit are replete with one incident after another, where climate scientists have taken precisely the opposite attitude.

That includes the present case. The sane resolution of the present FOI request would have been for East Anglia to just send me the data, even if they felt that they didn't "have" to. The best way to remove suspicion would have been to say: "Here, Steve, take a look". If Schmidt thinks that that's what CRU has done in this case, then he's the one in tin foil country.
