This is a scandal: If Obama fan Warren Buffett's company has $38 billion in cash, and he's personally worth $44.4 billion, why does he need even one dime of taxpayer money for his allegedly planet-healing wind and solar projects?

RENEWABLE ENERGY:

Buffett said the subsidies Berkshire Hathaway's utility companies get for their wind and solar power projects are important because the projects might not get built without them.

"I don't think any of our projects would make sense without subsidies," Buffett said...But Berkshire still doesn't want to pay a dividend anytime soon because Buffett and Munger believe they can invest the $38 billion cash on hand profitably.

Why I'm still going to this month's Heartland Climate Conference

A)  On one hand, they've put on many wonderful climate conferences that have been important in the honorable, crucial fight against the most massive scientific and political fraud in human history.
B) On the other hand, for one day, they put up a billboard that was true but not politically correct.

For me, item A very clearly outweighs item B above.

Meatpacking plant turns into net-zero-energy vertical farm | Grist

Soon, a former meatpacking plant in Chicago will replace carcasses and rendering vats with bakers and brewers and fish farmers and mushroom growers. The Plant (ho ho, a double meaning!) is gathering together a bunch of food-makers to create a self-sustaining system in the 93,500-square-foot abandoned space. As Fast Company reports, a former meatpacking plant is the perfect place to start a food business of this kind: It already contains “food-grade materials” which are safe for food preparation.

The plant, which should be finished by 2016 or 2017, will run largely off its own waste. It’s getting a cogeneration system that will burn methane from an anaerobic digester, creating electricity, heat, and steam to boil brewery kettles. The grain from the beer-brewing process will feed fish on the fish farm. The fish waste will feed the mushrooms and plants, which will clean the water. The water will go back to the fish farm. All the other waste will go into the anaerobic digester. It’s a ciiiiiircle of life!

ALP hits panic button over carbon tax fears | thetelegraph.com.au

JULIA Gillard's frontbench has hit the panic button over the carbon tax with senior ministers warning it is "killing" the government, and others touting Greg Combet as a leadership option.

Divisions have erupted over the sales pitch and design of the tax, with some demanding the Prime Minister accelerate the planned move from a fixed to a floating carbon price, or boost planned compensation for struggling families.

Julia Gillard is standing firm but her frontbench are in despair. "The carbon tax is killing us," a senior minister told The Sunday Telegraph.

Asphalt Heat Islands | Real Science

I just did an experiment in Fort Collins, Colorado at 1:30am.  It is a full moon and the air is dead calm. I took a bike ride with a thermometer, which I have permanently affixed to the bike. It turns out that temperatures are 7F cooler in the open space region below, less than 0.2 miles away from the parking lot of a shopping center.

...Hansen’s assumptions about heat islands are based on population, but I believe that the bulk of the effect occurs when a single asphalt road is put in place. Much of the claimed warming during the 20th century was likely due to the appearance of asphalt roads in rural regions.

Muller’s claims about UHI are similarly flawed, as they are based on population. Comparing large cities vs. small towns is largely meaningless, because all it takes is one asphalt road to produce a lot of warming.

Over on the CSU campus 2.3 miles away, temperatures were much warmer – 57.8 degrees at the official Fort Collins weather station. This station has not moved for 140 years, and shows a lot of warming during that time. It is now located in the middle of a bus parking lot.

The piece notes, "many have started to seriously question whether the extent of travel to international conferences is defensible." Correct me if I am wrong but I think that Anders Breivik is the only "almost peer" of those people who is a staunch global warming skeptic. If you realize that the numbers of alarmists and skeptics in the world are comparable, you must agree that the alarmists are hugely overrepresented among the villains.

Revised statement of sceptic view | ScottishSceptic

  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2) has been increasing: in 1960 it was 0.032% of the atmosphere, today it is 0.039%.
  • There has very probably been warming of average global temperatures. This is about 0.8 C in the past 150 years.
  • There is a greenhouse effect, and CO2 is a greenhouse gas.
  • Increasing CO2 alone should cause warming of about 1C for a doubling of  CO2.
  • People think there are mechanisms that could increase warming further than the direct effect of CO2. This catastrophic warming is not supported by the evidence.
  • Although man-made sources of CO2 have increased global levels of the gas, it is falsely suggested that all the rise is man-made. Scientific analysis shows part of the increase is natural and no one is certain how much or little of this rise is man-made.
  • The effects of warming have been exaggerated and known benefits have been hidden (We have yet to see substantial evidence of adverse changes such as increasing weather extremes. It is estimated there are more than 20,000 extra winter deaths each year in the UK and increasing fuel costs will make this worse.)

Is Climate Change Real? For the Thousandth Time, Yes | KQED News Fix

BROOKS: So is there a concerted campaign to debunk climate change theory?

MILLER: Yes, and very well documented. [Where is this well documented?] There’s a very determined and well-funded attempt to forestall action on climate change by casting doubt on the science. This is a time-honored tradition in our country; think of the Tobacco Institute. It’s a page from that playbook, basically.

...But Hurricane Irene from 2011 may be a glimpse of the future. We’ve always measured hurricane strength by wind speed. And I think what we’re seeing is the new signature of hurricanes, which is not wind speed but precipitation. It’s the amount of sheer water in them. You know, as the oceans have warmed, there’s more water vapor in the atmosphere. And it’s waiting to fall out in these major storm events. And there were places along the hurricane path where they, along the track of that storm, which saw like a foot of rain in a day...Part of the problem is that scientists are notoriously poor communicators and they need to do better. Just recently I was watching Jane Lubchenko testify on Capitol Hill. And California Republican Dana Rohrabacher rolls out this GAO study where they had found that a large percentage of NOAA’s weather data stations around the country were in sub-optimal locations, and that might be affecting the quality of the data we’re getting from them. And she really didn’t have an answer for it. She gave a very poor answer when confronted with it.

2006:  Whatever Happened to Global Cooling? | Global Warming | DISCOVER Magazine

Global warming skeptics often cite contradictory reports from a generation ago warning of global cooling. In 1975 Newsweek wrote of "ominous signs" that temperatures were dipping, and a year later National Geographic suggested the possibility of a worldwide chilling trend. Stephen Schneider, a climatologist at Stanford University, recalls those stories well. "I was one of the ones who talked about global cooling," he says. "I was also the one who said what was wrong with that idea within three years."

Schneider coauthored a 1971 article in the journal Science about atmospheric aerosols—floating particles of soil dust, volcanic ash, and human-made pollutants. His research suggested that industrial aerosols could block sunlight and reduce global temperatures enough to overcome the effects of greenhouse gases, possibly triggering an ice age. But he soon realized that he had overestimated the amount of aerosols in the air and underestimated the role of greenhouse gases.

"Back then this science was so new, so theoretical, it was really hard to sort it out," he says.

[Vahrenholt] For years I believed the science of the IPCC was solid. I had the famous hockey stick graph (a graph purporting to show that current global temperatures are by far the highest in the last 1000 years, editor) in all my presentations. But then I read the book The Hockey Stick Illusion by Andrew Montford, which is very critical about this graph. Slowly I started to realize we have been misguided by the IPCC about the natural fluctuations in the climate in the past thousands of years. The whole purpose of the IPCC has been to get rid of the so-called Medieval Warm Period, a warm period around the year 1000 when the Vikings settled on Greenland and were able to live there for a couple of centuries. After this warm period we have had the Little Ice Age which coincided with a very quiet sun. Many papers have been published in the last few years which show that the Little Ice Age was not a local European phenomena, as the IPCC suggests. So yes, the IPCC has underestimated the natural fluctuations of the climate and overestimated the role of CO2.

Scientists for a long time have argued that a code that you write to implement algorithms is your intellectual property, and the National Science Foundation has stood firmly behind that.

When our critics asked us to turn over our computer code, we understood what they were doing: if it was the computer code, they didn’t care, because then it would be something else. It would be our personal emails, and in fact they ended up stealing our personal emails [So Mann knows who "stole" his emails?]. They weren’t interested in seeing our computer code or trying to independently implement it. They were looking for something to try to discredit us, to be able to say ‘oh look how sloppy their computer code is, they’re not good computer programmers, you shouldn’t trust anything they do.’

We were aware of that and so we didn’t want to go down that slippery slope of saying yes, we’ll turn that over and then pretty soon you’re turning over personal emails, you’re turning over your private diaries. We didn’t want to set a precedent that would allow those looking to smear scientists, to go down this endless road of subjecting scientists to vexatious demands that would basically tie us up — we wouldn’t have any time to even do research any more. Unfortunately that’s what we’ve seen ever since. We’ve seen politicians try to subject us to subpoena all of our private emails. Its part of this cynical effort to discredit scientists, confuse the public, to intimidate scientists.

…But in the end, we even put our computer program out there in the public domain, recognizing that maybe it was going down a slippery slope, because what were they going to demand next? We knew there was nothing wrong with it at all, we put it out there, and what we predicted was exactly what we saw. We didn’t see any discussion, nobody ever even downloaded, as far as I can tell [Is Mann actually suggesting that no outsider has ever checked his computer code for errors?], the code or try to run it, because they didn’t care about the code, they were just looking for something that they could say, ‘oh look, scientists won’t provide this’, and then once you provide it—’oh well they won’t provide this’, and then once you provide that, ‘oh well they won’t provide that.’ And pretty soon what do they want? Do they want you to provide them literally with the dirty laundry from your house?

...Many climate scientists have received hundreds, and probably now even thousands of threatening emails

LONDON — Police arrested three people on May 3 as hundreds demonstrated against rising fuel prices and climate change outside a London conference attended by energy company bosses.

Quark Soup by David Appell: Hulme, The (Disappointing) Finale

the IPCC 5AR Zero Order Drafts that were leaked a few months ago already seem to be going far beyond science. For example, the 13th Chapter of Working Group 2, "Livelihoods and Poverty," has subsections on "Inequality and Marginalization," "Indigenous People," and "Gender," among others... Gender! What is that doing in a document assessing science?

...It's not the these aren't important issues, but we're being told climate change requires immediate action to, essentially, rebuild the infrastructure of civilization. We can't possibly solve all of humanity's endless number of problems while reconnecting the pipes, and to try would be to dilute the effort until it dissolves into nothing.

A Fresh Look at Clouds, and Heat, in the Greenhouse - NYTimes.com

The Lindzen focus is a distraction, to my mind. Anyone thinking that the erosion of Lindzen’s credibility will somehow build societal enthusiasm for cutting greenhouse gas emissions is probably overly optimistic. This was expressed bluntly in Mother Jones by Kevin Drum, who wrote that clouds (and Lindzen) aren’t “deniers’ last hope,” adding, “Human greed and self interest are their last hope, and there’s very little chance of that diminishing anytime in the near future.”

Mark Lynas » Where sea-level rise isn’t what it seems

Whoa! No sea-level rise there, then. And yet of course climate campaigners – and even the Kiribati government – understandably anxious to highlight the future existential threat to the islands, have used storm surges, flooding events and suchlike as evidence of current sea-level rise impacts. Which they are almost certainly not, at least not in Tarawa atoll anyway.
