Interview: Dr. Michael Mann, Climate War Veteran
If there was a medal for fighting the climate war, Dr. Michael Mann should probably get one.
...Dr. Michael Mann: That’s what book is really about. It’s about this massive disinformation campaign that has been funded by fossil fuel interests, advocates for the fossil fuel industry, front groups and organizations that have sought to manufacture this fake debate about whether or not climate change is real.
...I think in part that’s because there is so much pressure…there really is a machine, a very organized machine out there to make sure that when the NYT runs an article about climate change, you’ll be sure they will get thousands of angry emails from climate change deniers denouncing their (NYT) acceptance of the hoax of climate change. Ultimately their business model relies on advertising and so even the NYT is sensitive to that.3p: Do you think what we have is more of a communication problem rather than a scientific one?
MM: Yes. Sometimes you’ll hear critics say we can’t act until we’re certain, until there’s proof, but science doesn’t work that way. In my book I note that proof is reserved for mathematical theorems and alcoholic beverages. Scientists are skeptics by nature – there’s never been such thing as proof in science, but there’s the weight of evidence and we act on the weight of evidence. Why is it that when it comes to climate change, where there is as much scientific consensus about the reality of human caused climate change as there is about any scientific proposition, critics demand absolute proof?
Use family planning to fight climate change
In my view, we need to change our behaviour of producing many children. The only way this can be possible is by practicing family planning in each and every household.
One way to achieve this is through universal access to contraceptives, massive family planning champagnes, sensitization and legislating number of children per household. If we are to fight climate change, we need to reduce our demographic figures.
Efforts need to be done to increase family planning practice to reduce our household size as well as lower fertility and birth rates.
Biologist Wynne Parry proposes reducing our human size. She suggests that we can alter ourselves through human engineering where one chooses whether to have small size children or not. Smaller in size and height (dwarf-like) to reduce demand.
This would mean instead of having 500 buses in Kampala, we would require 80 of them to solve transport problems in Kampala, one car would be enough for a family of 10 people. Much as this would reduce GHG emission levels, this approach may remain in theory forever.

A Closer Look at CRUTEM4 Since 1975 | Bob Tisdale – Climate Observations
The adjustments shown in Figure 14 might lead some readers to believe the Climate Research Unit went to all that work with the single-minded goal of raising the land surface temperature anomalies after 1998 so that their records could show that global warming continued. Yup. Those adjustments just might lead people to believe that. But maybe we also need to consider the locations of the new 5X5 grids that contain data and the land surface temperature anomaly patterns in 1998 and 2007. Figures 15 and 16 present the CRUTEM3 and CRUTEM4 zonal mean land surface temperature anomalies (not trends) for the years of 1998 and 2007. And Animations 3 and 4 present maps of the temperature anomalies, and grids with and without data, during those two years for the two datasets. I’ll let you decide.

BBC News - Spanish unemployment hits record 5.64 million
Spanish unemployment has hit a new record high, official figures have shown.
The number of unemployed people reached 5,639,500 at the end of March, with the unemployment rate hitting 24.4%, the national statistics agency said.
The figures came hours after rating agency Standard & Poor's downgraded Spanish sovereign debt.
...
"The figures are terrible for everyone and terrible for the government... Spain is in a crisis of huge proportions," Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said.
2009: Spain's Answer to Unemployment: Go Greener
Here on the sun-drenched and windy Iberian Peninsula, Spain thinks it has an answer: create new jobs and save the Earth at the same time.
Green jobs have become a mantra for many governments, including that of the United States. But few nations are better positioned -- or motivated -- to fuse the fight against recession and global warming than Spain. The country is already a leader in renewable fuels through $30 billion in public support and has been cited by the Obama administration as a model for the creation of a green economy. Spain generates about 24.5 percent of its electricity through renewable sources, compared with about 7 percent in the United States.
But with unemployment at 18.5 percent, the government here is preparing to take a dramatic next step. Through a combination of new laws and public and private investment, officials estimate that they can generate a million green jobs over the next decade. The plan would increase domestic demand for alternative energy by having the government help pay the bill -- but also by compelling millions of Spaniards to go green, whether they like it or not.
In the long term, the government envisions a new army of engineers and technicians nurturing windmills and solar farms amid the orange orchards and carnation fields of Andalusia and Galicia. In the short term, officials say, the renewable-energy projects and refurbishing of buildings and homes for energy efficiency could redeploy up to 80 percent of the million construction workers here who lost their jobs in 2008.
Spain's ambitious effort is being closely watched by the Obama administration and other governments forming their own green-job plans. The U.S. stimulus bill is dedicating billions in grants and loans to renewable-energy projects, marking a shift away from Washington's more passive approach to green growth, which relied largely on tax incentives.

EPA chief: 'Crucify' comments from official are 'disappointing' - The Hill's E2-Wire
The apology came soon after Inhofe released a 2010 video Wednesday of Armendariz comparing his enforcement philosophy to that of Roman soldiers who crucified villagers in towns they wanted to conquer. He made the comments after calling the oil-and-gas sector an "enforcement priority."
“I was in a meeting once and I gave an analogy to my staff about my philosophy of enforcement. And I think it was probably a little crude, and maybe not appropriate for the meeting, but I’m going to tell you what I said,” Armendariz says in the video.
“It is kind of like how the Romans used to conquer the villages in the Mediterranean — they’d go into a little Turkish town somewhere and they’d find the first five guys they saw and they’d crucify them. Then that town was really easy to manage for the next few years.”

Great Smoky Mountains Rainfall Measured | Water & Climate Change | OurAmazingPlanet.com
People are often unaware that the Smokies have the highest annual rainfall in the southeastern United States, about 58 to 60 inches (147 to 152 centimeters), greater even than Florida's Everglades, which sees about 54 inches (137 cm) a year. But most of this rain is barely perceptible, misting rain, the new study has found.
"There's always a little bit of fog and low-level clouds and there's always a little bit of rain," said Ana Barros, an engineer at Duke University, who led the study of the Smokies' rainfall.
...The results suggest the area may be more susceptible to climate change than thought; as temperatures rise, more of the fine droplets from light rain will evaporate in the air and fail to reach the ground. Lower elevations will have to contend with not only higher temperatures, but less cloud cover, Barros said.

Amazing Teen Fighting Climate Change in Iowa (Video)
Glori Dei Filippone of Des Moines is 13 years old and she is suing the government for not protecting the atmosphere.
...She’s been working at the Des Moines, Iowa Farmer’s Market since she was eight years old. One day, a blind lady walked up to the stand and picked up an apple. She asked Glori, “Is this an apple?” Glori answered that it was. She then asked if it were red and Glori responded, “Yes.” The blind lady then shared, “It feels very beautiful, I’ll take a bushel.”It really hit home with Glori how this woman didn’t need to see something to believe it was there. Glori equates this with climate change understanding
...Last year, on Mother’s Day, she filed a petition at the Iowa Department of Natural Resources asking the agency to adopt and implement a Climate Recovery Plan. This plan, based on the best available science, would establish peak global carbon dioxide emissions by 2012, reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by at least 6 percent every year, and commit to widespread reforestation. The petition was denied (and the Chair scolded her for being vegetarian), so she brought her case to court. The district court judge dismissed the case so she is now heading to the Iowa Supreme Court on appeal.
"At best, only a couple of per cent of the world's climate scientists query the basic science so having an equal proportion of sceptics on any programme totally biases the debate," said Professor Andy Pittman, co-director of the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of New South Wales.
..."The problem with people like Morano is that they have a very forceful way of putting their arguments, even though each one of them is wrong. Because he comes across as very slick, people believe him," [Michael Ashley] said."People watch a programme like this and they think there's a scientific debate. It's a lose, lose situation for climate scientists," he said.
The opinion among scientists may be overwhelmingly one sided, but the Australian public is deeply divided on whether global warming is caused by human activity. Surveys repeatedly show opinion split almost 50:50.
Why I engaged with the sceptics – Opinion – ABC Environment (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
I didn't know at the time who Nick would choose to take me to visit. But I knew he would struggle to find credible voices who rejected the science. And I was right. Surely people can see through the kitchen table science of Joanne and David in Perth, the underhanded tactics used by blogger Marc Morano, and the lack of credibility of Dick Lindzen - given his history of habitual contrarianism and the fact that his theory about clouds had been rejected in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
...And while it didn't make the final cut of the documentary, I believe Nick's admission in London that the climate has warmed and that "human emissions of CO2 probably made some contribution to that" was a major step forward from someone who had previously called climate change some kind of plot "to de-industrialise the western world" and "the new religion of the extreme left". Most hard-core climate deniers refuse to accept any link between carbon pollution and climate change, so Nick's statement represented to me a major step forward.

Moreover, CO2.con investors, like all speculators, want quick returns. Their quick return demands rapidly growing trees in arable country - deserts and salt pans are uneconomical. Thus the wheat/sheep belt is shrinking.

Al Gore's Formula for DOE Green Technology-Scandal
- Form a political partnership with insiders at Company A developing "Green Technology."
- Distribute cheap stock in Company A to political insiders -- with ownership concealed.
- Shower Company A with insider-directed DOE grants, contracts, and loans to artificially pump up its financials and Potemkin-prospects for success
- Tout the ingenuity of Company A in major political speeches -- even if you have to manufacture a global warming "crisis" to justify the company's product.
- Advise political insiders to discreetly dump their overpriced stock a little at a time to avoid a run in the market but well before the inevitable collapse. This gradual insider-trading will not trigger alarm in the market or scrutiny from the SEC, which is normally on the hunt for large stock-trades suspiciously timed to specific events.|
- Collect campaign contributions from gratified and newly enriched political insiders.
- Wash, rinse, and repeat the fleecing cycle with Company B.
The deviousness of this formula is that Treasury funds are not stolen directly.

Just read the “Conclusions” of Mooney’s book on Amazon. He has obviously gone way out of his competency and freely speaks of things he can’t possibly understand. As far as I am concerned, anybody who believes it possible to measure Liberals and Conservatives has an infantilistic view of “measure” and of “politics”.
...Anyway, the icing on the cake is the fact that the Conclusions aren’t that idiotic really, and Mooney says he now admires “conservatives”, and goes as far as to recommend “conservatives” and “liberals” “need be operating together“. Well, Brainy Boy, that’s not achieved really by calling your book “The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Deny Science–and Reality“, is it??
Perhaps the defining failure of Barack Obama’s administration has been his ill-fated investment in “green energy.” Much of this investment was rushed through Congress as part of the “stimulus” program with little or no scrutiny, but we can now see where the money went. As this devastating Americans For Prosperity video shows, a lot of it went overseas to create jobs in foreign countries...This video is radioactive; if most Americans see it between now and November, Obama has little chance of re-election.
ABC: even worse than the BBC – Telegraph Blogs
Those of you who don't live in Australia will be lucky enough to have missed last night's travesty of a documentary I Can Change Your Mind About Climate Change by the Aussies' gag-inducingly PC state broadcaster ABC. Better still, they will have been lucky enough also to have missed the even more ludicrously biased panel discussion afterwards in which an outrageously parti-pris greenie moderator, a greenie "social researcher" (whatever that is), a greenie youth activist, the head of the ultra-greenie, even-worse-than-the-Royal-Society CSIR and two more greenie plants in the audience bravely took on an evil mining magnate (my new hero Clive Palmer) and an evil climate change denier (Nick Minchin) in order irrefutably to demonstrate that anyone who does not deny the reality of Anthropogenic Global Warming must perforce be the spawn of Satan. It reminded me so much of the BBC's nuanced approach to the climate change issue it was almost as if I'd flown home 15 days early.

NewsRoomAmerica.com - "Warming hole" Delayed Climate Change Over Eastern United States
(Newsroom America) -- Climate scientists at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have discovered that particulate pollution in the late 20th century created a "warming hole" over the eastern United States — that is, a cold patch where the effects of global warming were temporarily obscured.
While greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane warm the Earth's surface, tiny particles in the air can have the reverse effect on regional scales.
"What we've shown is that particulate pollution over the eastern United States has delayed the warming that we would expect to see from increasing greenhouse gases," says lead author Eric Leibensperger (Ph.D. '11), who completed the work as a graduate student in applied physics at SEAS.
...Since the early 20th century, global mean temperatures have risen—by approximately 0.8 degrees Celsius from 1906 to 2005—but in the U.S. "warming hole," temperatures decreased by as much as 1 degree Celsius during the period 1930–1990. U.S. particulate pollution peaked in 1980 and has since been reduced by about half. By 2010 the average cooling effect over the East had fallen to just 0.3 degrees Celsius.
..."No one is suggesting that we should stop improving air quality, but it’s important to understand the consequences. Clearing the air could lead to regional warming," Mickley says.

TIMOTHY WIRTH: We called the Weather Bureau and found out what historically was the hottest day of the summer. Well, it was June 6th or June 9th or whatever it was. So we scheduled the hearing that day, and bingo, it was the hottest day on record in Washington, or close to it.

Youth and naiveté no match for maturity and experience | Australian Climate Madness
Rose's low point was her introduction to Marc Morano. She refused to engage with someone who was "not a climate scientist". Neither was her first "expert", the farmer, but that didn't stop Minchin from listening politely. Her petulant schoolyard attitude unfortunately betrayed her youth and inexperience, and harmed her cause. Morano was pretty well controlled in the circumstances.
Well well. I just watched the online streaming version. We did 4 hours of footage at our house, and they showed not one single point I made, not one answer to Anna Roses questions. I repeated my favourite lines about 28 million weather balloons, 3000 ocean buoys off by heart at least 4 times. Obviously everything I said was too “dangerous”. But we have the full tape of the whole event, so sooner or later the world will see the parts that the ABC deemed to be not “interesting” to the Australian public. So all in all, pretty much as we expected. They trimmed it down to the point where it’s tame, they gave the alarmists the last word (they always do), and while they were happy to grill us about where our money came from just like Wendy Carlisle, when the question backfires (because we are not shills for anyone) they won’t show it. We can’t let the public know that Jo Nova and David are volunteers.

"This administration has had an obsessive focus on their global warming agenda," the group's president, Tim Phillips, told reporters, adding that the ad is a new effort to challenge the "flawed idea from the left that government can create prosperity using taxpayer money."

Needless to say, this, along with his chosen environmental advisors, makes a lot of people nervous, perhaps too nervous to go out and vote. So, in order to calm people’s fears, here’s a series of campaign promises that Mr. Romney needs to make:
More debunking of the ex-NASA 49 climate change deniers | Bad Astronomy | Discover Magazine
I find a lot of the climate change deny-o-sphere pretty baffling. A lot of the claims are trivially wrong, a lot more are cherry-picked and can be seen to be wrong when presented in the correct context, and others are just spin and rhetoric ("carbon dioxide is plant food!") that is facile at best and outright nonsense at worst. Of course, many of them touted this letter by the ex-NASA 49 as more proof that climate change is wrong. Amazing.
"I can change your mind": if it's experts you're after, look elsewhere
[Michael Ashley] Climate scientists – I’m talking about the 97% or so that agree that humans have a considerable influence on the climate – are very uneasy with the false balance that a program such as this engenders. From the moment a climate scientist steps onto the stage with a climate denier, the audience’s default assumption will be that there is a 50:50 contest going on. It is going to be difficult or impossible for the scientist to win the argument at the 97:3 level that characterises the debate amongst experts, let alone the 99.99:0.01 level as it exists, roughly, in the scientific literature.
...For me, the most surprising part of the documentary was Minchin’s choice of experts: they were all duds who would only influence the gullible or those blinded by ideology. Although, to be fair to Minchin, there aren’t any non-dud experts on his side to choose from. For example, blogger David Evans from Perth showed Rose an aerial photo of a meteorological station near an airport, declaring that half of the world’s “official” thermometers were like this and that they were measuring warming from jet aircraft engines more than anything else.
Rose’s response was “surely you don’t think climate scientists are that stupid?”
And of course Rose is right. Climate scientists aren’t stupid – global warming is clearly measured when only the highest quality rural meteorological stations are used. [Lomborg's] solution now is to spend $100 billion a year in research and development for a magic technological fix, while keeping on burning fossil fuels.
This is like saying “let’s jump out of this airplane without a parachute, and we will research and develop ways of landing safely on the way down”.

“Their mission is to put people out of business,” Inhofe added. “Their mission is to kill hydraulic fracturing.”
