Boulder council to consider climate goals, carbon tax - Boulder Daily Camera

The city in 2002 adopted the Kyoto Protocol, which calls for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 7 percent below 1990 levels by 2012. Now that 2012 has arrived, the city still needs to cut the equivalent of about 521,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide to meet its goal.

"It's not quite as easy as we thought," Huntley said.

Why Climate Change Will Make You Love Big Government - Truthdig

To adapt to climate change will mean coming together on a large scale and mobilizing society's full range of resources. In other words, Big Storms require Big Government.  Who else will save stranded climate refugees, or protect and rebuild infrastructure, or coordinate rescue efforts and plan out the flow and allocation of resources?

It will be government that does these tasks or they will not be done at all.

Preventing bad weather, government-style; Home insulation safety inspectors cost us $3.4 million | Herald Sun

FLYING squads of safety inspectors charged with cleaning up the Federal Government's home insulation scheme have jetted around the country, lodging bills of up to $3000 to inspect a single home.

That's almost twice the original value of insulation installed under the scheme, which offered householders free insulation up to the value of $1600 as an economic stimulus measure.

The frequent-flying inspectors have travelled thousands of kilometres to check dodgy installations, even jetting from the Gold Coast to Melbourne, Perth to Adelaide and Brisbane to Perth.

Response From George Taylor On The Oregon Debate On Climate Science

[Pielke Sr] I have concluded that the global average of surface temperature, etc, is almost a worthless metric, as what really matters is the extent (and if) large scale regional circulation patterns are changed. If we [convince] the IPCC (and AMS and AGU leadership) that they are looking at the wrong metrics, we might be able to make some progress. :-)

Sixteen Concerned Scientists: No Need to Panic About Global Warming - WSJ.com

Speaking for many scientists and engineers who have looked carefully and independently at the science of climate, we have a message to any candidate for public office: There is no compelling scientific argument for drastic action to "decarbonize" the world's economy. Even if one accepts the inflated climate forecasts of the IPCC, aggressive greenhouse-gas control policies are not justified economically.

Email 1104, March 2005: Heinz Wanner says he was highly critical of the hockey stick as an official IPCC reviewer in 2001, but "My review was classified "unsignificant" even I inquired several times"

Email 1104
I had to give several interviews (TV, radio, newspapers) but tried just to explain science. Now an old story is warmed up. I was a reviewer of the IPCC-TAR report 2001. In my review which I can not find again in its precise wording I critcized the fact that the whole Mann hockeytick is being printed in its full length in the IPCC-TAR report. In 1999 I made the following comments:
  1. The spatial, temporal (tree-ring data in the midlatitudes mainly contain "summer information") and spectral coverage and behaviour of the data is questionable, mainly before 1500-1600 AD. 2. It is in my opinion not appropriate already to make statements for the southern hemisphere and for the period prior to 1500 AD.
My review was classified "unsignificant" even I inquired several times. Now the internationally well known newspaper SPIEGEL got the information about these early statements because I expressed my opinion in several talks, mainly in Germany, in 2002 and 2003. I just refused to give an exclusive interview to SPIEGEL because I will not cause damage for climate science. I just told a woman from SPIEGEL that I do carefully follow the activities and the forthcoming of the next IPCC report and I will then take position concerning the paleoclimate chapter there. I thought it is meaningful to infomr you about this fact./blockquote>

Email 1162, June 2007: Eugene Wahl says the Ammann-Wahl paper can be freely shared among warmists before it comes out in hardcopy, but it should be kept away from McIntyre

Email 1162

Here is the Ammann-Wahl paper as promised. We received letter of final acceptance and movement to "in press" status yesterday from Stephen Schneider. We would ask that distribution be kept limited until it actually comes out in hard copy (scheduled for the November 2007 issue of Climatic Change) so that its chances of getting to McIntyre (et al.) are reduced, and thus the the probability is decreased that he/they will have chance to attack it before it is fully available to the public--as they almost certainly would if the opportunity arises. Weird to need to consider such things, but that is the state of our science re: this particular paper.

However, you should certainly feel free to share it within your research groups.

Email 1150, Dec 2004, Chris Landsea to Pachauri: "Dr. Trenberth in representing the IPCC has successfully promulgated into the media his own opinion that the 2004 hurricane season was caused by global warming, which is in direct opposition to research written in the field and is counter to conclusions in the TAR"

Email 1150

Dr. Pachauri, you mentioned earlier that "individual scientists can do what they wish in their own rights", which is certainly true. Differing conclusions and robust debates are crucial to progress in climate science. However, what we have here is not in this case an honest scientific discussion. Instead, Dr. Trenberth in representing the IPCC has successfully promulgated into the media his own opinion that the 2004 hurricane season was caused by global warming, which is in direct opposition to research written in the field and is counter to conclusions in the TAR. Yet, I have been asked to provide the writeup about observed hurricane activity variations for the FAR with, ironically, Dr. Trenberth as Lead Author. Because of Dr. Trenberth's pronouncements, the IPCC process on our assessment of these crucial extreme events in our climate system is compromised and its objectivity lost. While no one can "tell" scientists what to say or not say (nor am I suggesting that), the IPCC did select Dr. Trenberth as a Lead Author and entrusted to him to carry out this duty in a non-biased, objective point of view. To this, he has failed. I personally cannot in good faith continue to contribute to a process that I view as not being scientifically sound. As long as this structure remains, I will no longer participate in the IPCC FAR. Sincerely, Chris Landsea

Washington Post admits the obvious: "countries that are cold right now could see very real benefits from a few extra degrees"

Global warming would harm the Earth, but some areas might find it beneficial - The Washington Post

You don’t hear much talk about it, but countries that are cold right now could see very real benefits from a few extra degrees. Consider the Northern Sea shipping route, which runs through the Arctic waters north of Europe and Asia. It’s a faster and cheaper way to ship oil from Russia and Norway to markets around the world, but it’s currently too icy to navigate for much of the year. Climate change could open the route earlier and keep it clear later. It may also allow companies to extract new oil and mineral wealth from beneath the sea.

Immigration patterns may shift as different areas become more comfortable. In his book “The World in 2050,” UCLA professor Laurence C. Smith notes that cold-weather Canada has the look of a future superpower. Over the next four decades, the country’s population growth rate will be among the highest in the developed world.

There’s also a potential farming benefit. According to the International Panel on Climate Change, global warming could improve agricultural productivity in northern Europe.

The region might see as much as a 30 percent increase in wheat production, for example, by 2080. Some countries will become hospitable to foods they can’t grow in 2012. There may be a 50 percent increase in the areas of Sweden and Finland that are suitable for growing corn.

More than 98 percent of CO2 is from natural causes—just two percent is from humans, and mostly from stationary sources. And just a fifth of the human-caused emissions are from the global automotive sector. You could plug up the spark plug holes of every car and truck on the planet with cement and it would be a rounding error as far as CO2 production is concerned.

The whole thing [blaming cars for global warming] is outrageous, and the purpose is to create an artificial scarcity of fossil fuel to raise prices and get alternative fuels, which cost way more, to start paying off.

Trevor,
Just had Susan Solomon on the phone. Asked (and I agreed) if I would be a convening lead-author on the Atmospheric Observations chapter of the next WGI IPCC report. Means a big commitment for the next 2.5 years. Doing it with Kevin Trenberth. If you've not already sent off your recommendation re professorial pay rise, this might be some useful information. If yes, I can keep it to use next year.

Email 1046, Nov 2009, Phil Jones and Tom Wigley don't know what caused the early 20th century warming, but a "possible explanation" is changes in ocean circulation

Email 2038
So, what caused the early 20th century warming? A possible explanation is that it is the result of a major increase in the rate of formation of NADW (Wigley and Raper, 1987), an idea that is supported by the pattern of warming which is a maximum in the North Atlantic (Schlesinger and Ramankutty, 1995). We noted earlier that the fact that this warming is similar for the land and the ocean (in fact, the 1910 to 1940 trend over the ocean is greater than over the land) suggests that it is not externally forced (since this would normally lead to warming over the land that was greater than over the ocean), and that it originates in the ocean. This also helps to explain why the land/ocean warming differential that one would expect as a consequence of external forcing has only become evident over the past three decades." [It looks like Wigley wrote this paragraph, and Jones responded "Sounds fine!"]

Hayhoe plays the gender card: "as a woman, most of the attacks that I'm receiving are from men, and so that has a very different dynamic to it that honestly can feel very threatening and intimidating sometimes"

Katharine Hayhoe: "..Much of This is Intended to Intimidate." - YouTube

I had the privilege to interview Dr. Hayhoe this past weekend at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, where the Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise
was conducting a workshop and Town Hall meeting entitled "Cures for Climate Confusion".

At the 4:10 mark she says "as a woman, most of the attacks that I'm receiving are from men, and so that has a very different dynamic to it that honestly can feel very threatening and intimidating sometimes".
At the 9:00 mark, she suggests that the current period of drought in the Southwest was initiated by La Nina. She then compares CO2 emissions to poor diet and/or lack of exercise.

Email 1028, April 2008, Phil Jones on adjusting SST data for the mid-20th century: "Explaining the cooling with sulphates won't be quite as necessary"

Email 1028

The skeptics will make a meal of this when it comes out, but if they did their job properly (I know this is impossible!) they would have found it. It relates to a problem with SST data in the late 1940s. The problem will get corrected for at some point. SSTs need adjusting as there must be from buckets for the period from Aug45 by about 0.3 gradually reducing to a zero adjustment by about the mid-1960s. The assumption was that after WW2 they were all intake measurements and didn't need adjusting. This will reduce the 1940-1970 cooling in NH temps. Explaining the cooling with sulphates won't be quite as necessary.

Weaker sun will not delay global warming | Reuters

(Reuters) - A weaker sun over the next 90 years is not likely to significantly delay a rise in global temperature caused by greenhouse gases, a report said Monday.

The study, by Britain's Meteorological Office and the university of Reading, found that the Sun's output would decrease up until 2100 but this would only lead to a fall in global temperatures of 0.08 degrees Celsius.
