Fun with Chicago Winter Temperatures « Reasonable Doubt on Climate Change
Of course we can’t say from this what’s going to happen over the next 30 years, but with a stunning drop at a rate of nearly 11 degrees F per decade, you might reconsider banning white oak trees! If those who believe solar cycles and ocean cycles have more of an impact on climate than carbon dioxide are right, Chicago can expect to see more significant drops over the coming decades, making everyone in the city planning department look pretty foolish.

Is there room for the environment at the Occupation? | Grist
"I saw a story in the New York Times that mentioned [Occupy Wall Street] was running on gas generators," Hurowitz says. "It didn't seem right that a movement that's supposed to change the world should be propping up big oil."
...
The trouble is, the tech crew is missing an adapter necessary for connecting the panels to the battery. So they're charging the battery with their gas-powered generator instead. "Right now, we're not using the output in the smartest way," Mears says.

Nick Bryner, a 27-year-old, fourth-year law student at George Washington University who assisted with the solar panel installation, says that even when the solar array is connected, "It's not going to be enough to cover all the energy needs."
...Occupy Boston has devised a solar-charging USB box to keep cell phones juiced up. The Rolling Sunlight did make it to Wall Street, where it powered the media center there. But three days in, it had to be driven back to D.C. for repairs, according to Greenpeace media officer Molly Dorozenski. There was apparently some sort of charging problem with the batteries.

Hypothermia and respiratory problems and significantly reduced numbers, oh my: Wall Street protesters find out that the planet isn't as overheated as they had imagined

Winter woes threaten Wall Street occupiers
They put on a gritty war face and insist they are more determined now than ever, but the Occupy Wall Street campers now face the slow advance of an unrelenting enemy: the New York winter.

As freezing winds blew Friday over the epicenter of their protests, Zuccotti Park in Manhattan, the demonstrators were already huddling in significantly reduced numbers.
...
"The cold affects us already," admitted Maria Fehlig, a volunteer nurse at the protesters' makeshift infirmary, a small blue tent marked by a cross that is the only structure so far tolerated by owners of the park ensconced between skyscrapers.

She noted there had been several cases of hypothermia and respiratory problems.

‘The Science is Settled’, Part 858 » Climate Resistance
Many in the debate want to draw a line under the science, to have it ‘settled’ once and for all. But as has been discussed at length, here there and everywhere, that just ain’t science. The desire to move forward with policies, then, without further debate about ‘what science says’ — it has spoken, after all — speaks about the extent to which the policy-making process precedes the evidence-making process. Looking more deeply at the coverage of the debate reveals that expectations of science precede the science. The dialogue between the policy-makers and the evidence makers is two-way, and precludes any criticism or alternative discussion entering the dialogue.

Witches, God, climate change … it's a matter of belief
Part of the problem is that large numbers of people have ''come to think that [scientists and policymakers] are nasty, clever people trying to push their liberal, environmental, anti-business, anti-jobs, anti-religious causes''.

Meanwhile, the media has fragmented and the old expectation of quality and ethics has gone in the Fox News-like pursuit of market niches.

Climate Change Negotiations: The Death of the Kyoto Process - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News - International
There seems little possibility that next month's climate summit in Durban will produce an emissions reduction agreement -- meaning the world will soon lack any binding CO2 targets. Europe may soon find itself alone in the fight against global warming.

A climate catastrophe descended on the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin early last week...."The meeting in Durban could become an act of mourning," warns Reimund Schwarze of the Climate Service Center in Hamburg, which analyzes climate policy on behalf of the German government.

Although the industrialized countries will achieve the goal set in 1997, Merkel, now Germany's chancellor, has lost almost all the optimism she had at the time. In fact, she now warns that the international negotiations could turn into a "huge disappointment."

The Kyoto Protocol was never ratified in the United States, and the country remains unwilling to submit to international commitments on energy consumption out of a concern that doing so could cost jobs. "Clean energy has become a dirty word in the United States," a close advisor to US President Barack Obama said during a recent visit to Berlin.

Government's drive to boost electric car sales falls flat - The Independent
A government plan to make 2011 "the year the electric car took off" appears to have stalled, with uptake of a scheme to promote sales of environmentally friendly vehicles falling dramatically.

The number of vehicles sold through the scheme has dropped significantly since its launch, with only 106 being bought in the third quarter of 2011, down from 465 in the first quarter of this year, and 215 in the second.

Scientists take unnecessary fossil-fueled trips to Miami to discuss how to convince other people not to take unnecessary fossil-fueled trips

Nature News Blog: Can psychology overcome a climate of resistance?
In Miami today, at the annual meeting of the Society for Environmental Journalists, a panel of three social scientists tackled the question of how to get people to change behavior. Never mind whether they care or not. How can the culture be tweaked? How can policies be set to influence human behaviors to emit less greenhouse gas?

One - perhaps controversial - recommendation they all echoed was to avoid the phrase 'climate change,' which they say has become too politicized. Kenneth Broad, the director of the Leonard and Jane Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy at the University of Miami suggested 'environmental change.' Shahzeen Attari, who studies human behavior and energy use at Indiana University likes "climate disruption."
...If we can "psych out" the man on the street and get him biking to work, we should be able to influence the major decisions that shape our global energy economy. Perhaps environmental organizations should start recruiting in psychology departments and in the intelligence community.

Another inconvenient truth: The National Audubon Society folks clearly don't actually believe in their own global warming hoax propaganda

For a while now, the Audubon folks have been telling us that emitting CO2 is a very evil thing to do.

A book (The Big Year) was written about three birders who needlessly burn an absolutely enormous amount of fossil fuel (on long-haul flights, rental cars, airboats, etc).

When the book is turned into a movie, does Audubon take a strong stand, telling us that emitting CO2 is still evil, even if you do it as part of their favorite hobby?

The answer is a resounding "No". Not only does Audubon fail to condemn this movie, they have reportedly sunk six figures into the Fox marketing effort.

This underlines the biggest problem for global warming hoax promoters: The underlying premise of CAGW is so stupid that not even the "believers" truly believe in it.

Junk scientist: “It appears we really did save the world in 1987”

Scientist speaks out after finding ‘record’ ozone hole over Canadian Arctic | News | National Post
“If the taxpayer in his infinite wisdom were to give me 10 times the budget I have now, I think I could use all that money quite usefully and do good science with it,” Tarasick said. “I don’t think we’re wasting a penny . . . Could we get by on less money? Well, we could do less with less money. We could do more with more money.”

Environment Canada measurements show that the hole over the Arctic resulted in somewhat lower ozone over most Canadians this summer, and UV levels about three to five per cent higher than what would be expected if there had not been a hole. But Tarasick assured Canadians that they should not have health concerns because of the recent ozone depletion.

“If we didn’t have the Montreal Protocol (signed in 1987) . . . we would have seen a rather permanent ozone hole, which would have flushed, in the spring, low levels of ozone to lower latitudes,” Tarasick explained. “It appears we really did save the world in 1987.”

Climate scientists, for whom any inherent doubts about the possible extent of human influence on the climate were overcome by years of training in physics and chemistry of the climate system, need to accept that there are rational cultural, religious and historical reasons that the public may fail to believe that anthropogenic climate change is real, let alone that it warrants a policy response. It is unreasonable to expect a lay audience, not armed with the same analytical tools as scientists, to develop lasting acceptance during a one hour public seminar of a scientific conclusion that runs counters to thousands of years of human belief.

BBC News - Climate study raises 'heated debate'

Research he and others have done since shows clearly, he said, that "while the AMO was the dominant influence on global mean temperature during 1904-1944 and 1944-1976, it is not the dominant influence over the entire observational record, 1850 to 2010.

"Over this time period, it is the increase in the concentrations of greenhouse gases caused by humanity's burning of fossil fuels that is the dominant cause of the observed warming."

Confused warmist Muller: You shouldn't be a skeptic of anthropogenic global warming; by the way, we didn't assess the anthropogenic component of global warming

William M. Briggs, Statistician » Richard Muller Gives Permission To Be Climate Skeptic, Shows Why
Physicist Richard Muller has a piece in today’s Wall Street Journal that should be read by everyone (The Case Against Global-Warming Skepticism).

Richard MullerMuller concedes—in public—what many skeptics have claimed for years: that our temperature record is poor, especially over the oceans, that it is limited, filled with errors and biases, and when used as a basis for judgment, leads to over-certainty.
...
Even more delightfully, Muller admits that it has not been growing stormier (sorry, Big Al):
...
From that he insists, “you should not be a skeptic, at least not any longer.” Somebody has to remind Mr Muller that skeptics aren’t skeptical of that some warming (and some cooling) has occurred. We are skeptics about our ability to explain this warming (and cooling), and to predict skillfully future warming (and cooling).

The fallacy—and it is a fallacy Mr Muller commits—is to suppose that because many climatologists have offered one theory for the observed warming (and cooling), and that, at least for the moment, they cannot think of one better, that therefore their theory is true. Thus, I remain skeptical.
Richard A. Muller: The Case Against Global-Warming Skepticism - WSJ.com
Global warming is real. Perhaps our results will help cool this portion of the climate debate. How much of the warming is due to humans and what will be the likely effects? We made no independent assessment of that.

We didn't listen!: Remember when leading scientist Thomas Edison warned us about the dangers of alternating current?

War of Currents - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edison's publicity campaign

Edison carried out a campaign to discourage the use[17] of alternating current, including spreading disinformation on fatal AC accidents, publicly killing animals, and lobbying against the use of AC in state legislatures. Edison directed his technicians, primarily Arthur Kennelly and Harold P. Brown,[18] to preside over several AC-driven killings of animals, primarily stray cats and dogs but also unwanted cattle and horses.[improper synthesis?] Acting on these directives, they were to demonstrate to the press that alternating current was more dangerous than Edison's system of direct current.[19] He also tried to popularize the term for being electrocuted as being "Westinghoused". Years after DC had lost the "war of the currents," in 1902, his film crew made a movie of the electrocution with high voltage AC, supervised by Edison employees, of Topsy, a Coney Island circus elephant which had recently killed three men.[20]

Edison opposed capital punishment, but his desire to disparage the system of alternating current led to the invention of the electric chair. Harold P. Brown, who was being secretly paid by Edison, built the first electric chair for the state of New York to promote the idea that alternating current was deadlier than DC.[21]

This ought to "shut up" climate skeptics: Earth warming so incredibly quickly that allegedly only one-third of sites have cooled over the last 70 years

New study seeks to shut up climate skeptics | EurActiv
According to the Berkley’s project leading scientist, Robert Rhode, urban heat does not contribute significantly to the average land temperature rise, because urban regions amount to less than 1% of the land area.

Indeed, two-thirds of the weather stations reported warming of land temperatures over the last 70 years, while only one-third of sites, the bulk of them in Europe and the United States, reported cooling temperatures.

“The large number of sites reporting cooling might help explain some of the skepticism of global warming,” Rhode said, adding that it is very hard to measure weather consistently over decades and the presence of sites reporting cooling temperatures can false data. This is why it takes hundreds of stations to detect and measure an average warming, work that was done by the California University scientists.

But it seems like people in the developed world have all these great devices, but people in the rest of the world deal with the pollution. Here in Hong Kong, there’s a lot of smog, and I’m told that much of it comes from over the border in mainland China, where much of this stuff is made.

Gore: About two percent of global warming comes from this stuff. “It’s a non-trivial factor”.
...
Except for this massive disinformation campaign, reminiscent of the tobacco industry in the 1950s telling us that smoking didn’t cause cancer, that tells us this stuff isn’t a problem.
...
10:48 am: Gore: Meanwhile look what’s happening in Pakistan, Thailand, Russia, Colombia, all facing terrible crises because of the climate. Columbia has had 5x its normally rainfall this year. The Philippines have had massive series of downpours for the past two years. Nashville, my hometown, just had “once in a thousand year rainfall… at some point there has to be a reality check.”

10:49 am: Walt: And this is all because of pollution?

10:49 am: Gore: Yes.

Articles: How Many Electricians Does It Take to Screw In a Light Bulb?
I'm not sure how much you'd be willing to pay an electrician to change just one lamp, but I'm sure you would absolutely blow a fuse if you were asked to pay (as taxpayers did) the almost $1,100 that the county paid my company to replace just one light bulb on that day. The county did in fact "party like it's 1999," but it did so on the taxpayer's dime.

While not all of the tasks were as blatantly wasteful as the one given on that day, it seems as though my company was hired to help dispose of some "surplus" cash that the county was given for those "Y2K" projects. Basically it's the same concept as one of those "use it or lose it" year-end monetary bonfires we've all heard about.

Unclear on the concept: After observing four decades of "wacky" Canadian weather, warmist David Phillips suggests that current wacky weather is caused by carbon dioxide

Senior climatologist has fun with weather trivia
After four decades in the business, David Phillips knows bad weather sells.

He’s moved thousands of copies of his annual Weather Calendar, which chronicles the “misery, hardship and misfortune” wrought by Canada’s wacky weather.

So what happened to normal weather?

“My sense is that this may very well be the beginning of climate change. This is the way that climate change is showing up: in extremes and flip flops and real surprises,” he said.

Though residents of the second coldest country on earth may laud “global warming,” what it really means is that Canadians can expect more wild fluctuations and bigger storms.

“We’re not going to be Miami of the North,” he said.

Our tax dollars at work… a half-billion dollar loan (actually $529 million) from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a hybrid toy for the wealthy and/or celebri-licious (like Leonardo DiCaprio, one of the first customers) that, in real world driving, won’t get much better mileage than your average crossover utility vehicle. Not only that, but the cars are manufactured in Finland — that’s right, Finland – and shipped here for sale, where their purchasers will then receive a $7,500 tax credit for buying one (the “cheap” base model starts at $96,895, with the full-zoot Eco Chic model going for a bargain $108,900).
...
contrary to the company’s initial hype, the Karma will only run for thirty-two miles on its electric motors before its turbocharged gasoline engine needs to kick in (as opposed to the initial estimate of fifty miles). Once that occurs, the Karma gets about the same mileage as a Ford Explorer. Not the new Explorer, even. The older, gas-hog, body-on-frame model. We’re talking twenty miles per gallon, folks. So much for your “green investment.”

Pie-throwing warmist Mark Lynas on Greenpeace anti-nuclear activists: "These people are nuts"

How Mark Lynas riled the green movement | Environment | guardian.co.uk
e360: You attribute much of this fear to scaremongering by environmentalists.

Lynas: After the accident, Greenpeace was running around giving press conferences in their white biohazard suits. There were anti-nuclear activists planning to go and sell chalk pills to supposedly save the children of Fukushima. They believe in what they're doing, but these people are nuts. And they're doing real harm by spreading fear. What we know from Chernobyl is that the psychological impacts of fear of radiation are worse — in terms of health outcomes — than the actual damage of the radiation itself. We need to learn the lessons of this and that nothing is without consequences, nuclear scare-mongering included.
...
e360: You seem to have undergone quite a personal and professional transformation. Ten years ago, when you were a frontline activist, you walked into a bookstore and threw a pie in the face of [Danish author] Bjorn Lomborg, who had just published The Skeptical Environmentalist.

e360: Have you talked to Lomborg since that incident?

Lynas: Yes, I have made an abject apology to him on a couple of occasions and he's been gentlemanly enough to accept it in very good grace. And in an odd sort of way, we've become quite friendly. I actually have found that I have a high regard for the work he does, even though I still don't agree with a lot of his conclusions. I think what Lomborg does is genuine, and no one should have a pie thrown in his face because he challenges conventional wisdom.

How can the UK government only now be commissioning reports which state the obvious? How did it fail to anticipate that rising energy costs would cause harm to people? Why did it not consider the human cost of its policies before rushing them through parliament? Why did it not think to consider mitigating the effects of fuel poverty before creating the problem of increasing fuel poverty? Why should we think that the government’s attempts to intervene to mitigate the effects of fuel poverty will be any less damaging than their attempt to mitigate climate change?

Why Take Science Seriously?
To ridicule climate science in the face of definitive scientific consensus: the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and every other scientific academy around the world, not to mention the unpaid global work of thousands of scientists for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, is heartbreaking. We’ve seen the science of the greenhouse effect for 200 years. Use of fossil fuels for the past 150 years has been proven to produce greenhouse gases that are warming the planet to disastrous levels. This is an unequivocal scientific fact. We must look to science for the difficult answers to this situation and take action. Working against the tides of science deniers, many of which have been shown to be compensated to question the scientific facts, makes this task so much harder.

In an attempt to promote the global warming hoax, NPR blogger quotes Galileo: "Think for yourself! Don't take what people tell you at face value. To not bow blindly to dogma!"

Why The U.S. Needs To Learn More Science : 13.7: Cosmos And Culture : NPR
Even that early, reasoned logic was seen as the antidote against irrational fears based on blind faith in superstitious beliefs. Science is a direct consequence of this deep shift of attitude: no more cowering in fear from nasty deities!
...
Under this view, science is more than a collection of explanations about the natural world: science is a means to freedom, offering people a way to control their destiny, to choose wisely in what to believe. As Galileo insisted at the dawn of modern science, "Think for yourself! Don't take what people tell you at face value. To not bow blindly to dogma!" And mind you, Galileo was a religious man. Being pro-science does not necessarily makes you anti-religion. Paraphrasing Galileo, "if God gave us a mind to understand the world, He surely would be most pleased if we did so."

We live in times when, wanting it or not, science plays a major role in our present and will play an even major role in our future. Take, for example, the question of energy and global warming. What choices of energy are better for the planet and future generations? Which political candidates align with what choices? How can we think critically about the results from the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change and the litigious nature of some of its critics, including presidential-hopeful Rick Perry's recent comments? As an antidote to Perry's and others that don't take science seriously, I suggest reading Lisa Randall's essay recently published in Time Magazine.

Romney sought the advice of Malthusian green activist John Holdren, when Romney was considering a cap and trade regime for Massachusetts. Holdren hails from the radical side of the green and AGW movement. Today, Ed Morrissey points out that Romney also worked on that same cap and trade idea with Douglas Foy. The UK coalition government and their creative policy analysts have come up with a solution for this difficult situation -- they are proposing to redefine "fuel poverty" in a manner that shows it to be decreasing, not increasing...

Voila, problem solved!
Nature’s Sneak Peek into AR5 « the Air Vent
ature magazine has given us an article by a Qin Dahe which provides a preview of the upcoming AR5 report. The article is a piece of triple A rated, (alarmist, advocate, activist) – of course – but it confirms our suspicion that the reasonable critiques of the alarmism are having no appreciable impact on the “science” or the cloak under which it is performed.
EU Referendum: Unravelled Green
that makes it about thirty months from inception to total collapse of this absurd policy. God only knows how much money has been wasted on it.

With this though, and many other issues, we begin to see the Green agenda unravelling with increasing speed. Despite the continuing flood of scare stories, they no longer have any heat or political traction. The scare is dying on its feet.

The really interesting thing here are the political implications – at national and EU level. As the agenda slides towards oblivion, The Boy's credibility can only be damaged, even more than it is already. Far from being the husky-hugging greenest government ever, it may well go down as the administration that finally junked the Greens.
Comment On The Quality Of The 2007 IPCC WG1 Report In Response To A Post On Climate Etc | Climate Science: Roger Pielke Sr.
The 2007 IPCC WG1, in my view, was a failure in the assessment of the understanding of the human role in the climate system, as well as the extent to which the natural forcings and feedbacks influence the climate.
Sudden winter weather causes Bulgarian mayhem
A sudden onset of harsh winter conditions caused transport chaos in Bulgaria on Tuesday, with one man freezing to death, eight people missing in mountains, 600 villages without power and schools closed.
A Green Whitewash | CNSnews.com
Walter Cronkite's longtime producer Leslie Midgley once wrote that, "News is what an editor decides it is." News today is what TV producers decide can help President Obama. News that hurts isn't news at all.
...
Now there's Solyndra. Team Obama doesn't want anyone "politicizing" Solyndra or trying to coin "Solyndranomics." They want minimalist coverage, and that's precisely what they're getting.

Since its Aug. 31 bankruptcy filing, ABC, CBS and NBC have filed a grand total of 15 stories on Solyndra. That's an Enron-to-Solyndra comparison of 24 to 1.
California Green Tax Breaks in Question - CNBC
In just a year, a little-noticed state panel created with bipartisan legislative support worked briskly to authorize $104 million in tax breaks to help "green" companies in California buy equipment and add jobs.

But the program was halted last month following the bankruptcy of Solyndra, a Fremont solar company that received $25 million in state tax breaks and, more notoriously, a $528 million federal loan guarantee despite its precarious financial state. The Solyndra debacle is being investigated by Congress.

The California program has been frozen to new applicants amid questions about how the recipients were chosen.
Articles: Subsidies Have Consequences
The trouble with the ruling class is that it doesn't have a clue about business.
Articles: The Bizarre World of Radical Climate Science
The reports of the International Panel on Climate Change (the IPCC) are often taken as the authoritative last word on climate change. These reports are are disorganized and unfocused. As a result, most people go no further than the introductory Summary for Policy Makers. If you dig deep into the reports, solid scientific support for the claims of impending catastrophe is not there. Computer models are the shaky foundation of global warming. Models from different modeling groups disagree with each other by wide margins. As the IPCC admits, the models have serious deficiencies. The IPCC uses misleading graphical illustrations to make it appear that the models can accurately mimic the Earth's climate.
Professor Judith Curry: IPCC “WG2 And WG3 Reports Pretty Much Belong In The Dustbin”
Donna appears to have set something into motion. The books are well-priced and I suggest readers buy extra copies and give them away as birthday or Christmas presents – or give them to your political representatives. Ask your pol if they can do better with our money.

Oh the irony! Pine Beetle outbreaks help cool the planet | Watts Up With That?
From Oregon State University College of Forestry some news that some people who want to blame pine beetle outbreaks on global warming won’t like. It seems there is a benefit.
The 99% Movement and Environmentalists | Planet3.0
As someone who has always believed that writers and artists and even philosophers are the canaries in the coalmine, I have been wondering if the current resurgence of progressive activism provides any reason for hope that the environmental movement might catch on with a group wider than the aging population that has been sustaining it. Demographic information about most environmental organizations makes it pretty clear that us baby boomers haven’t exactly passed along the torch.
Cities' role in global warming said to be minor
A neat and unsurprising demolition of a straw man.

Urban expansion means that urban heat is captured much more in actual temperature measurements than it would be in a ideal world...the tiny increment (measured in tenths of a degree) in global temperature over the last century or so could be entirely due to the steady encroachment of urban areas into what were once rural locations
