Game over for the IPCC? - Railway engineer Pachauri now building a canal in India
The fact that Pachauri now concentrates on other things than the IPCC and the global warming hoax, should be seen as a positive development. It shows that the game is over for the UN climate circus - and the Nobel laureate is turning his attention elsewhere. Hopefully he will not suggest replacing the canal with a railway.
The lights may go out in Germany even sooner than in Britain - Telegraph
Meanwhile, the BBC – as usual at the peak of the Arctic’s summer melt – prattles on about ships that sail round the top of Russia and Canada, and the ice soon vanishing altogether. In its strange bubble, the BBC seems unaware that ships could do this 70 years ago, before “global warming”, and that the real story is the crisis created by the massive return, for two successive winters, of ice to the Gulf of Finland and the Sea of Okhotsk.

Global warming hoax promoter Greg Laden: We know the warming isn't natural because (cough...mumble)

Global Warming: Separating the noise from the signal : Greg Laden's Blog
Numerous studies have identified a human "fingerprint" in global temperature change, and they do so by looking at temperature change over several decades, as described above. In doing this, the influence of year to year or other short term "noise" is reduced, allowing the identification of a signal caused by greenhouse gases.
...Global-scale warming over the 32-years from 1979 to 2010 is now four times larger than computer model estimates of internal climate "noise" on the same timescale. Purely natural changes in climate are highly unlikely to explain the overall warming trend in the UAH data.

A more accurate way to put this is that Senate Democrats won't approve new funding for disasters unless they get the funding they want for corporations that make electric cars.

C3: Major IPCC Climate Model Prediction Error Substantiated: Ocean Warming Not Happening, It's Cooling
The climate models, based on the IPCC's favored CO2-based AGW theory, predict that oceans will warm as the atmosphere warms from human CO2 emissions. Indeed, human emissions have continued to increase over the past decade but the empirical evidence clearly shows ocean temperatures have not, with declining temperatures a recent phenomenon that may continue.

Climate Change Task Force Climate Change: Climate Skepticism & Ways Forward : Center for a Better Life
[Cmdr. Blake McBride, U.S. Navy Task Force Climate Change] Climate skepticism is a good thing. Really. We should all question what we think we know and seek to refine our understanding of the truth. Skepticism is the very foundation of scientific inquiry, and climatology is a science, not a religious dogma or political tenet. I don’t accept every new idea I come across at face value. I determine the level of my acceptance of new ideas based upon the weight of the evidence that supports them, which is the foundation of scientific analysis. Consequently, true climate skeptics are rare and, I would propose, largely found within the scientific community.

What I suggest is that you seek different climate scientists than you used for your Forbes article, but who do not have a stake in the findings of the S&B paper, or its refutation. Select several in the topic area of the S&B paper, and request that they review the S&B work, and then report on their findings along with who they are. If you select individuals who are seen as less biased by all sides on this subject, you will have significantly closed the gap between our two views (and on the viewpoints of others).

Professor of Philosophy struggles to understand why climate realists don't believe that CO2 is overheating the Earth

Michael Ruse: Denying Evolution and Denying Global Warming: Is There a Biblical Link?
I take it that the cause and effect argument would be something like this: Modern science insists on the truth of evolution. But we know that evolution is false. Hence we should not accept modern science, at least not at face value. Why then should we accept warnings about global warming? In both cases we are getting predictions (or retrodictions) about times other than the present. If science is so unreliable about the past, why should we take it seriously about the future? The Bible is the guide to the past. The Bible is also a guide to the future. Leave it at that.

AP climate hoax promoter SETH BORENSTEIN blames bad weather on your CO2-emitting sins

Disasters in US: An extreme and exhausting year - Wire Health & Science - sacbee.com
What's happening, say experts, is mostly random chance or bad luck. But there is something more to it, many of them say. Man-made global warming is increasing the odds of getting a bad roll of the dice.

Sometimes the luck seemed downright freakish.

The East Coast got a double-whammy in one week with a magnitude 5.8 earthquake followed by a drenching from Irene.
...
"If you weren't in a drought, you were drowning is what it came down to," Masters said.
...
One of the most noticeable and troubling weather extremes was the record-high nighttime temperatures, said Tom Karl, director of NOAA's National Climatic Data Center. That shows that the country wasn't cooling off at all at night, which both the human body and crops need.

"These events are abnormal," Karl said. "But it's part of an ongoing trend we've seen since 1980."

Individual weather disasters so far can't be directly attributed to global warming, but it is a factor in the magnitude and the string of many of the extremes, Karl and other climate scientists say.

While the hurricanes and tornado outbreaks don't seem to have any clear climate change connection, the heat wave and drought do, said NASA climate scientist Gavin Schmidt.
...
Judith Curry of Georgia Tech disagreed, saying that while humans are changing the climate, these extremes have happened before, pointing to the 1950s.

"Sometimes it seems as if we have weather amnesia," she said.

''But they'll put them in at the time the certifier comes in there and does the check, and then they'll go back and put their halogens in because that's what they want … There's a lot of cheating that goes on around the DIY system.''

While the green-jobs dream is collapsing, Mr. Obama has the opportunity, with Keystone XL, to prove commitment to genuine jobs, which must always ultimately be based on profitable private enterprise. Redefining Peer Review — Editor Resigns « the Air Vent
I would urge readers to review the resignation letter as we should discuss this for a while and it holds several important keys to what is going on.
- Bishop Hill blog - Critiques and responses
Remote Sensing has now made it clear that they will not be retracting the paper.

It seems clear from Wagner's resignation letter that his understanding of the alleged flaws in Spencer's paper came from blog posts like the one at RC; there is, as yet, no formal critique of the paper in the literature. It therefore seems fairly clear that Wagner's resignation was prompted by blog posts and perhaps word of mouth from Spencer's rivals. If so, this is extraordinary and quite an indictment of climate science.

Apparently there is going to be a formal critique of the paper, which will be published in GRL in the near future. This will be interesting for sure, but one has to wonder why a critique of a paper in Remote Sensing would be published in GRL; of course the suspicion will be that the authors will expect an easy ride from the editors there. We know that prominent climatologists have expressed their satisfaction with the "plugging" of the "leaks" that had been seen at that journal in the past. Remote Sensing, on the other hand, is presumably much more of an unknown quantity to them.

- Bishop Hill blog - Brooke on the Stirling FOI case
Heather Brooke in the Guardian writes in support of the position I took on Philip Morris's line on FOI compliance for universities:
The UK's FoI law is meant to be applicant blind. This means anyone can ask a public body for official information and there should be no discrimination based on the identity of the person asking. In the case of scientific research conducted and funded in the public's name, there is a strong argument that the underlying data and methodology should be disclosed. It is precisely this transparency that grants research reports their status as robust investigations.
Good for her.

The Reference Frame: James Hansen plans to arrest Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama
Hansen as a leader of the alarmist climate science

I would like to stress that James Hansen isn't a random John Cook whom I cherry-picked only because his texts are the best proof of the intellectual impotency and marginal insanity of the advocates of the global warming threat. In reality, James Hansen is also arguably the most respected alarmist climate scientist in the world. He's being respected as a celebrity not only by Greenpeace but by a large part of apologists for the meme that we face a dangerous climate change.

How did it happen? How could it happen despite Hansen's obvious marginal insanity? Well, it actually happened not just despite his marginal insanity; it has largely happened because of that. People and organizations such as Greenpeace have simply been the most important drivers that were influencing the composition of the climate change community in recent decades. Many of them tried to show their true colors in a less obvious way than Greenpeace but the logic was really structurally isomorphic. And what they needed were lunatics similar to the Greenpeace members themselves - who could however pretend that they can also work as average, productive scientists at the same moment so that they are more socially acceptable than the nuts who just hug and climb the trees and chimneys and eat assorted roots.

CI wins NASA grant to teach climate [junk] science » Ventura County Star
Camarillo, Calif., Sept 2, 2011 - A grant obtained from NASA by CSU Channel Islands (CI) will help engage Ventura County high school students in the science behind global climate change.

CI Science Education Professor Dr. Bob Bleicher secured the $593,000 grant to help biology and earth sciences teachers incorporate NASA climate change data, research and curriculum into their classrooms. Teachers at eight schools in the Oxnard Union, Ventura Unified and Santa Paula Union High School Districts will receive professional development and resources under the grant.

“The goal is for students to be able to interact with the best climate research tools available from NASA and form their own arguments and conclusions about climate change,” said Bleicher. “Our hope is that we get more students excited about pursuing higher education and careers in science.”

CI was one of only 14 institutions across the nation awarded the funding through NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Program. The first-time grant targets schools with a high percentage of Hispanic students, who are underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The grant supports professional development for up to 20 teachers over two years at all six schools in the Oxnard Union High School District and at Ventura and Santa Paula High Schools. It includes honorariums for the teachers; instruction from nationally recognized experts on climate science; access to NASA satellite data and resources; printed and online support materials and lesson plans; on-site instructional assistance; and a two-day global climate change summer camp for students. The teacher instruction and student summer camp will begin in the summer before the 2012-2013 school year.

Though there is no "strong signal" on what might happen with precipitation, Scheck said there is a La Nina watch in effect. During a La Nina winter, North Dakota tends to be colder and snowier than average.

Papantonio: Republicans Want Climate Science Removed From Textbooks - YouTube
Republicans and their corporate masters for years have been trying to keep the truth about climate change from reaching the American public. They work tirelessly to tell us that the earth isn't getting hotter; or that there is no scientific consensus that global climate change is real; or even that climate change is a GOOD thing because its going to open up shipping routes in the arctic. Their latest efforts, however, go far beyond their usual tactics, as they're now trying to get their anti-science agenda taught in public schools. Mike Papantonio discusses this issue with author Chris Mooney.

A Maryland state senator said he paid a $100 fine after being arrested outside the White House with other protesters while rallying against a plan to pipe oil from western Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.

Sen. Paul Pinsky, D-Prince George's County, on Friday joined environmental activists who have been gathering outside the White House for the past two weeks to protest the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. Pinsky said he was charged with misdemeanor failure to obey a lawful order.
The Al Gore Show: 24 Hours of Denying Reality « Roy Spencer, Ph. D.
I could have done better in my career if I played along with the IPCC global warming talking points, which would have led to more funded contracts and more publications.

It is much easier to get published if you include phrases like, “…this suggests anthropogenic global warming could be worse than previously thought” in your study.

In contrast, Mr. Gore has made hundreds of millions of dollars by preaching his message of a “climate crisis”.

I would say that it is Mr. Gore who is the “climate denier”, since he denies the role of nature in climate variability. He instead chooses to use theory as his “reality”.
By giving in to Big Oil, Obama seals his political fate | Grist
Given how much more President Obama cares about the oil companies than the environmental movement, we might as well just let the oil companies take care of his reelection and focus our resources on congressional and state house champions.

That's not a happy state, given the threat embodied by Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, and other Republicans, but it's one we will find ourselves in unless a progressive, pro-environment Democrat more concerned about job creation and protecting the planet recognizes Obama's dismal approval ratings and general inadequacy and steps up to give Democrats and the American people an alternative they can be excited about.

Car Buyers Aren’t Buying Obama’s Kool-Aid - By Henry Payne - Planet Gore - National Review Online
But sales figures from August of this year — just one (four year) product cycle before the 2015 edict goes into effect — indicate that Americans simply are not drinking the Kool-aid. Even as gasoline hovered near $4 a gallon, the average fuel mileage of the top ten vehicles sold last month was just 23 mpg. The top two vehicles, the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado pick-ups, which account for almost 40 percent of total top ten sales, average just 17 mpg. The top two sedans, the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima averaged 26.

Obama/Solyndra Reaction: "Should government pick winners/losers? Qualified Yes!" - Hit & Run : Reason Magazine
Finally I think the ed board is thinking wishfully when it claims the Solyndra debacle just raises “two important questions.” I can think of a few others: What did Solyndra do with the $527 million (out of a total guarantee of $535 million) it borrowed in the form of taxpayer-subsidized loans? Why did the Energy Department provide so much money for a technology – cylindrical rather than flat solar panels – that has not been proven scalable? What role did Tulsa-based fundraiser George Kaiser, whose George Kaiser Family Foundation held more than a 35 percent equity stake in Solyndra as of an aborted IPO in 2009, play in encouraging this subsidy?

Solyndra

Wow, that is really a fail.  Even in the worst run late 90′s Internet company I ever encountered, they were not selling dollars for 50 cents.  One wonders what numbers Steven Chu and company saw before they funded this dog, and whether from the very beginning these guys were counting on a steady stream of 9-figure government subsidy checks.

Editor-in-Chief of Remote Sensing Resigns from Fallout Over Our Paper

If some scientists would like do demonstrate in their own peer-reviewed paper where *anything* we wrote was incorrect, they should submit a paper for publication. Instead, it appears the IPCC gatekeepers have once again put pressure on a journal for daring to publish anything that might hurt the IPCC's politically immovable position that climate change is almost entirely human-caused. I can see no other explanation for an editor resigning in such a situation.

People who are not involved in scientific research need to understand that the vast majority of scientific opinions spread by the media recently as a result of the fallout over our paper were not even the result of other scientists reading our paper. It was obvious from the statements made to the press.

The Myth of Oil Addiction
America is no more addicted to oil than our ancestors were to horse fodder. We use oil, as they used fodder, to get us where we want to go. What consumers care about is not the oil or the fodder, but the mobility it provides and the associated costs. Yes, those costs include environmental impacts. But, mile for mile, the horse is a far more polluting ‘technology’ than an automobile. As soon as an alternative fuel comes along that delivers more bang for our transportation buck, Americans will demand it, and competition will drive profit-seeking firms to supply it.
Batteries from the Carboniferous | Watts Up With That?
...Nature has already solved this problem for us a very long time ago. It developed a system to capture solar energy and store it underground for future use in gas, liquid or solid form — to be used any time or anywhere we want, in rain or shine or in windy or calm conditions.

We call this energy capture system, “photosynthesis”, and this battery, “fossil fuels”.

Nature would never have thought that elements of humanity would look this gift horse in the mouth.

The energy-efficient lightbulbs that keep us in the dark - Telegraph
Perhaps it is a little narrow to object to energy-saving bulbs because they don’t bloody work. The EU is surely considering far more far-reaching ways to save energy. A ban on washing-up machines, I wouldn’t mind. No one needs a washing-up machine. Bans may also be expected on boxes of matches, lavatory cisterns, toasters, kettles that heat water above 50C, herpetaria, hot-water bottles, Welsh rabbits, unfrosted window panes, open-air chestnut sellers, fireworks, crème brûlée, farriers, escalators, hot-air balloons, blowlamps, candy-floss and kippers.

That would save lots of energy. And if it were all phased in gently, like the extinction of light bulbs, no one would say a word.

The figure also means the world’s atmosphere is worth a staggering £4.3quadrillion – or 100 times the value of the global economy.

Al Gore pushes halt to pipeline
The debate surrounding TransCanada Corp.'s Keystone XL pipeline grew louder Thursday as former U.S. vice-president Al Gore waded into the controversy, calling the proposed development "an enormous mistake."

"It's perfectly reasonable to be opposed, but it's probably not the best to make up the numbers," Levi said.

Rowers concerned by lack of ice after navigating Arctic
Wishart said the crew, who detailed their experiences on a blog at rowtothepole.com, saw dozens of walruses and whales and about 10 polar bears, including one particularly brazen one.

In the first week of the trek, during a rare stop where they were able to pitch a tent on some land, a polar bear got dangerously close before it was forced away with a few warning blasts from a shotgun.

"We hadn't closed hatches to go to sleep . . . and there was the bear five feet away from the tent," Wishart said.

"We fired a couple of bear-bangers over the top and he took off, much to the anguish of the three people in the tent who got a rude awakening."

Question this and you're worse than Hitler: "the extreme cold was mostly attributable to a natural climate cycle, the extreme warmth was not"

:: SCRIPPS OCEANOGRAPHY NEWS : : How Extremely Warm Were the Last Two Notoriously Cold Winters? ::
...the extreme cold was mostly attributable to a natural climate cycle, the extreme warmth was not.

"We investigated the relationships between prominent natural climate modes and extreme temperatures, both warm and cold. Natural climate variability explained the cold extremes, the observed warmth was consistent with a long-term warming trend," said Kristen Guirguis, a Scripps postdoctoral researcher who is the lead author of the paper set to be published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
...
"Over the last couple of years, natural variability seemed to produce the cold extremes while the warm extremes kept trending just as one would expect in a period of accelerating global warming," said Scripps climate researcher Alexander Gershunov, a report co-author.

Gershunov noted, however, that the study shows that extreme cold events in the past two winters, though driven by a natural cycle, are still consistent with global warming trends. The oscillation would have made cold snaps even more severe if the global warming patterns superimposed upon it hadn't mitigated the cold.

This is not about slightly altering the ways we do things; minor adjustments to our lifestyles. Let’s see it for what it is: as a political idea. It changes the fundamental relationships between people. To see it as anything else is to roll over. It’s no use just saying that this science, or that measurement is bunk — the idea which should challenge is that the science justifies the politics, whether it is bunk or not.

Climate Science's Tangled Web | The Resilient Earth
The alarmist web of lies is unraveling, one untruth at a time, and there is a hint of desperation in the air. From recent outburst by warmist prophets like Al Gore and James Hansen, the level of panic spreading through the climate change community can be gauged. They could ease their consciences and quiet their anxiety by simply admitting that the theory of anthropogenic global warming is wrong—know the truth and the truth will set you free.

It is not wrong or unusual for scientists to make mistakes, what is wrong is to cling to erroneous ideas and refuse to admit past mistakes. Faced with literally hundreds of corrections and new findings, the rational thing for a scientist to do would be to reevaluate his theory and its conclusions.

Instead, the climate alarmists stubbornly insist that the incorrect predictions made by their erroneous models over the past three decades somehow remain valid. Using tortuous arguments they have tied themselves in knots of illogic defending a theory that is indefensible. Climate science has not learned a lesson most mother's try to teach their children: you cannot lie your way out of being wrong.
