Global warming runs out of gas

For those who have a wish to hear the grating sound of a man distempered and frustrated that the cause for which he has given at least a decade of his time, the "greatest moral challenge of our time," is lost, I recommend listening to Al Gore as he was captured during an address at an Aspen global warming conference two weeks ago. It is a revelation.

Climate Skeptics: Crazy as They Want to Be

Serious, science-based climate skeptics have a chance to separate themselves from the foaming-at-the-mouth lunacy that defines their public image. I mention this because I know that some of you skeptics chafe at the buffoonish antics of Christopher Monckton and the sweeping declarations of Republican Senator James Inhofe.

Progressives like to cloak their policy preferences in the mantle of science, but they do not in fact give a fig about science, which for them is only a vehicle to be ridden to the precise extent that it is convenient. This is why they will ask what makes Rick Perry qualified to disagree with the scientific establishment, but never ask the equally relevant question of what makes Jon Huntsman qualified to agree with it. Warmist Andy Pitman admits that the science isn't settled; also admits that climate scientists overseas get "excellent salary packages" and they can "significantly affect policy"

Right climate to make move into science - National News - National - Education - The Advertiser
IT IS a rapidly growing field, calling for bright minds and big thinkers, but there are not enough environmental and climate scientists coming through university to meet demand.

The director of the Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science, Professor Andy Pitman, said while the need for climate scientists in academia, government institutions and the corporate world was fast increasing, ''we aren't training the next generation of students … to fill in those niches''.
...
In a bid to boost the numbers of climate scientists, the climate change research centre at the University of NSW is offering honours scholarships to graduates. .

Professor Pitman said many students, conscious of their HECS debt, forgo science or postgraduate degrees and enter what they see as more lucrative careers in business, finance and mining, but it was a misconception that science graduates did not do well.

''Almost invariably, climate PhDs with a physics or maths background find themselves in demand overseas and with excellent salary packages,'' he said. ''This is a growing area with a small number of such specialists, making them an elite that are coming in at the ground floor of a worldwide demand, so it is a great way to fast-track a career.''

Climate systems researchers have the chance ''to pursue some very serious science that will significantly affect policy and - because the field is so new - change our fundamental understanding of climate''
Flashback: Scientists 'losing climate fight' - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Professor Pitman says sceptics have used the IPCC's error to skew the climate change debate.

"Climate scientists are losing the fight with the sceptics," he said.

"The sceptics are so well funded, so well organised. "They have nothing else to do. They don't have day jobs so they can put all their efforts into misinforming and miscommunicating climate science to the general public, whereas the climate scientists have day jobs and [managing publicity] actually isn't one of them.

"All of the efforts you do in an IPCC report is done out of hours, voluntarily, for no funding and no pay, whereas the sceptics are being funded to put out full-scale misinformation campaigns and are doing a damn good job, I think.
...
Professor Pitman has also played down the significance of the error in the IPCC's report.

"There are two paragraphs that have been questioned in a 1600-page document," he said.

"After two years, people have been going over that report with considerable care and have found a couple of errors of fact in a 1600-page document.

"I mean, we ought to be talking about the other 1599 pages that no one has found any problems with."
Scientists: Aliens May Punish Our Species for Climate Change - Megan McArdle - Business - The Atlantic
It was ever thus . . . it's really remarkable, in fact, how often the aliens in science fiction just happen to be preoccupied with the exact same political issues that obsessed intellectuals of the era when the fiction was written. And yet it's still somehow breathtaking. They don't even notice that they're not noticing all their embedded assumptions. For example, the scientists do not even consider the possibility that the recent decline in church attendance among the citizens of the world's most powerful nations could be a signal to advanced, god-fearing aliens that we are a decadent and irreligious species who should be wiped out.
...
Of all the possibilities, the one that seems least likely to me is that advanced aliens capable of traveling between the stars will turn out to view global warming in very much the way that a handful of Western scientists do.

FALSE ALARM: Why Almost Everything We’ve Been Told About Global Warming is Misleading, Exaggerated, or Plain Wrong » Climate science’s decade of deception
Unhappily, as I discovered during more than two years of research for my book False Alarm: Global Warming—Facts Versus Fears, the 69 per cent have got it right. Over the past decade alarmist climate scientists—including the top figures in the field—have been deliberately misleading the public on many climate issues. One might even say alarmist climate scientists have developed a culture of deception, a culture that is very clear in the “Climategate” emails.

Among many deceptions—too many to deal with here—one is particularly blatant. For more than a decade, the public has been bombarded by claims that the planet was not just warming but experiencing “accelerated”, “unequivocal,” “unprecedented” and “dangerous” warming. Yet the actual temperature record shows that during the past decade, on average, there has been little or no warming.

Only recently, faced with a gap between the climate reality and alarmist theory that was too great to ignore, has official climate science begun to admit the facts to the public.

These three studies provide even more evidence (as if any more is even required) that shows that claims that hurricane activity is increasing are completely at odds with a plethora of findings reporting on observations collected from throughout the world.

» WaPo Gets its Pinocchio on for Dishonest ‘Warming’ Attack on Perry - Big Government
Remember, WaPo cites no evidence at all or even the ritual appeal to authority for man-made climate change (catastrophic or otherwise), but just assumes it without even the courtesy of an ‘arguendo’.

So let’s turn to the evidence WaPo generally cites, in its coverage, as supporting its faith, ’something called’ the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Now, the IPCC ‘is a bit old’, having been started expressly to ’support a possible future climate treaty’ in 1988. And seek to support such a thing, it does. If with increasing hilarity.

Who are these people, regularly cited either as “2,500″ or “2,000″ of the “world’s leading climate scientists” (later downgraded to 400 after a little scrutiny)? Are they that? Do The Four Hundred hold up against thirty-plus thousand including 9,000 PhDs? (and why does WaPo need to distinguish PhDs from the rest, as more credible? The man running the federal government’s climate effort has long claimed a PhD, even in a CV submitted to get a federal grant many years ago, but it turns out he only possesses an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from a different university than the one he used to claim an academic PhD from? Is he unqualified? Sort of like, well, WaPo’s writer. President Obama. Al Gore. And the rest? Again with the flexible standards).

No. The IPCC’s ‘chief climate expert’ is a railroad engineer. The 2,000 are anthropology teaching assistants, transport policy instructors, socialist economists and other climate luminaries.

And the IPCC’s Dr. William Schlesinger admitted that only 20% of UN IPCC scientists deal with climate: “Something on the order of 20 percent [of UN scientists] have had some dealing with climate.” Meaning by his own admission, 80% of the UN IPCC membership has no dealing with the climate as part of their academic studies.

The Green Jobs Fumble
This isn’t the first report on the green jobs fiasco. There are numerous reports of outrageous amounts of money spent “creating” very few jobs. There are reports of stimulus-receiving green-tech factories closing (or moving abroad), some after receiving praise from Obama himself. Could the failure of promoting ‘green’-jobs have been predicted? Well, you could have looked at Spain, or Germany.
The EPA Cannot Be Trusted to Keep the Lights on
So the EPA is low-balling the impacts of its regulations. Nothing new there—EPA long has underestimated the cost of its regulations. Expensive energy is bad enough; unreliable electricity is worse still. Demand-driven blackouts are a hallmark of developing countries. They are known in America only to Californians, where rolling brownouts have been unfortunate side-effect of silly green energy policies.

In light of these recent, troubling revelations about the EPA’s reliability analysis, the Congress should consider carefully whether the EPA is competent to avoid plunging this country into darkness.

There are dissenting scientists, but they’re a small minority within the climate-science community. A 2010 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences surveyed 1,372 climate scientists and found that 97 percent to 98 percent agreed that humans were contributing to global warming.

Weasel Zippers » Blog Archive » King Barack And Queen Michelle Fly Separate Jets To Martha’s Vineyard Only Hours Apart, Taxpayers Stuck With The Bill…
(WHD) — Michelle Obama and President Obama traveled to Martha’s Vineyard just hours apart, costing taxpayers thousands in additional expenses so she could have just a bit of extra vacation time.

Mrs. Obama and her daughters arrived just before 2 pm Thursday on a U.S. government jet, according to the Martha’s Vineyard Times, which got its information from the local airport. The first lady’s office has been silent on her travel. President Obama arrived in the evening along with the family dog Bo.

The extra costs related to Mrs. Obama’s solo trip mainly include the flight on a specially designed military aircraft she took instead of Air Force One, as well as any extra staff and Secret Service that had to be enlisted to go with her. She would also have had her own motorcade from the airport to her vacation residence.

Mrs. Obama’s separate jet travel sends the wrong message on a host of issues, from global warming to the budget deficit to the economy – in which currently so many people can’t afford to take a vacation at all.

This is not the first time Michelle has gone on vacation ahead of the president on the taxpayers’ tab. Last December, she racked up what was likely more than $100,000 in expenses leaving early for their Hawaii vacation.

"These changes are equivalent to animals and plants shifting away from the equator at around 20cm per hour, for every hour of the day, for every day of the year. This has been going on for the last 40 years and is set to continue for at least the rest of the century," he said.

"It's just a phenomenal rate of movement of the whole of biological life away from the equator towards the poles..."

Himalayan Glacier Disappearance Overstated | The Resilient Earth
Basically, lazy scientists picked the low hanging fruit in terms of gathering field data and, by doing so, have biased the results. Further more, that bias is toward glacial melting, the result desired by climate change alarmists. Naturally, if researchers gets the result they want, they look no further. So despite a non-representative, too small sample set, the IPCC and its fellow warmists ran with the melting Himalayan glacier story anyway.

This should surprise no one, for it is the modus operandi of the entire climate change cabal: take biased, inconclusive, or even contradictory results and spin them into calamitous predictions to frighten the public. In just the last few months we have found that shrinking arctic ice coverage is not anywhere near record low levels for the Holocene, attempts to estimate climate sensitivity from paleodata and models cannot be reconciled and the measured amount of radiant energy leaving the Earth is higher than that used in climate models, meaning the models have been wrong for decades,.

Fujita & Nuimura are to be commend for telling it as it is—reports of the Himalayan glaciers' demise are unwarranted. As are all the other tales of eco-terror told by the global warming charlatans. When will the climate alarmists learn? Inconclusive science, presented as settled science, is actually bad science.

If we’re willing to accept the premise that aliens come to earth and care about what we’re doing, why should we assume the alien race embraces contemporary environmental ideology? It seems to me the scientists are engaged in a bit of projection.

We could just as easily speculate about an advanced alien race seeing things quite differently. Perhaps the aliens would come from a planet with a much warmer temperature and see global warming as our invitation for them to colonize the planet. Or maybe they’d see gradual warming as a sign that we are a productive civilization that has been able to conquer and subdue our natural environment and is therefore worth trading and cooperating with. Or maybe this race would follow something like the “Prime Directive” and see our expansion as a reason to just leave us alone. Or maybe they would watch cable television and conclude we are a primitive, debased species not worth their time.

That means in a nine-month school year, Dean only has eight months to teach the rest of the 8th grade science curriculum – the stuff that kids will actually be tested on.

It is clear that “teaching to the test” leaves less time for their social engineering lesson plans, which cramps the propagandists’ style in a major way.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemelo doesn't believe in electric cars, Santa Claus (video) -- Engadget
As saucy as some of them may be, today's electric car is definitely a novelty. Still, it's not too hard to imagine a future where the majority of autos run on electrons -- whether they're pushed from batteries or hydrogen fuel cells. Not everybody's down with that idea, and one of those EV detractors is the incredibly suave Ferrari president Luca di Montezemelo. We recently had a chance to chat briefly with the man who said -- in no unequivocal terms -- that there is no electric Ferrari coming:
You will never see a Ferrari electric because I don't believe in electric cars, because I don't think they represent an important step forward for pollution or CO2 or the environment. But, we are working very, very hard on the hybrid Ferrari. This should be the future, and I hope in a couple of years you can see it.

Some would even see us imitate the Amish and return to horse and buggy without considering how to dispose of horse manure, horse urine and dead horses.

Climate activist Heidi Cullen told viewers of ABC News this week that recent 'extreme weather' was related to global warming, stating, "When you crank up the heat, when you globally warm the planet, you're going to see more extreme events." What she failed to mention is that the 'extreme weather' is due to La Nina, a cooling of the Pacific Ocean along the equator. Alarmists claim global warming leads to fewer La Ninas, and results instead in a "permanent El Nino" state of warming in the Pacific. This claim has also been repeatedly debunked in the peer-reviewed literature. The claim that warming leads to more extreme events such as storms has also been repeatedly debunked.

Completely lost in all the eco-babble about scrapping coal power and nuclear power and replacing it with "green energy" is the fact that a modern economy is built on cheap power and the changes the green activists want will lower enormously our standard of living. Question: If thousands and thousands of the world's climate scientists truly believe that developing the tar sands will make the world uninhabitable, why is only one climate scientist registered for this month's planet-saving White House tar sands protest?

Climate [junk] scientist willing to face arrest at tar sands pipeline protest | Environment | guardian.co.uk
Climate scientist Jason Box says oil sands are a moral issue that he feels compelled to address at Keystone XL pipeline protests
...as of mid-week he's evidently the only climate scientist who has registered to join about 2,000 other like-minded thinkers to line the fences surrounding the White House — where peaceful arrests are not uncommon for protesters of all stripes.

Climate scientists have already done their homework, Box emphasized, adding that the results are irrefutable.

Box sees no reason why he can't maintain his professional scientific credibility while making a foray into activism.

Tim Pawlenty sacrificed integrity -- his and ours | StarTribune.com
candidate Pawlenty embarrassed himself before the entire nation by turning his back on one of his most significant accomplishments.

As governor, he saw the ominous clouds of climate change as the economic opportunity they represent, and was a strong supporter of renewable-energy standards that helped make Minnesota a leader in using our abundant nonpolluting energy resources.

But as candidate for the Republican nomination for president, he shamefully recanted that position to fit right-wing talking points that the science is uncertain, while he knows the opposite is true -- the science has only grown more certain since he first became governor.

What a missed opportunity. What if instead he had stood firmly facing the whirlwind of climate-change denial and had spoken the truth -- that the winds of change are blowing and that the nation needs to embrace them.

That every reputable scientific organization in the world, from the National Academy of Sciences and the National Research Council to George W. Bush's scientific advisory committee, have all affirmed what the science of climate is telling us: Human activities are changing the climate in already alarming ways.

What a tough time it's been lately for the environmental activist crowd.

First, taxpayers took a hit when Fisher Coachworks of Flint — they were going to make electric buses — went under, taking millions of federal and state subsidy dollars into bankruptcy with it, and failing to fulfill ex-Gov. Jennifer Granholm's promise that it would be part of the "new energy economy in Michigan."

Then, Evergreen Solar, with operations in Midland, went bankrupt. Evergreen was supposed to be "leading the green industrial revolution," Granholm promised. Alas, now Evergreen is ever-dark and more American taxpayer stimulus dollars have been wasted.

Citing a Lack of Usage, Costco Removes E.V. Chargers - NYTimes.com
Costco, the membership warehouse-club chain, was an early leader in offering electric-vehicle charging to its customers, setting an example followed by other retailers, including Best Buy and Walgreen. By 2006, Costco had installed 90 chargers at 64 stores, mostly in California but also some in Arizona, New York and Georgia. Even after General Motors crushed its EV1 battery cars, the Costco chargers stayed in place.

Yet just as plug-in cars like the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt enter the market, Costco is reversing course and pulling its chargers out of the ground, explaining that customers do not use them.

“We were early supporters of electric cars, going back as far as 15 years. But nobody ever uses them,” said Dennis Hoover, the general manager for Costco in northern California, in a telephone interview. “At our Folsom store, the manager said he hadn’t seen anybody using the E.V. charging in a full year. At our store in Vacaville, where we had six chargers, one person plugged in once a week.”

C3: Explaining Global Warming To An Anti-Science Progressive Liberal - AGW For Dummies

What is the optimum temperature?
Australian grape-grower Erl Happ became interested in climate when trying to work out what climate was best for grape-growing. And, as every grape grower knows, some climates are better for grapes than others. So instead of the common academic focus on average temperature, Happ became interested in how that average is made up. He looked at temperature by region and season rather than by some uninformative global average. What he found was that temperatures in different regions and seasons moved in different directions at the same time. While one region or season was cooling another was warming.

So this regional/seasonal disparity very strongly made an explanation in terms of CO2 useless. AGW theory could explain uniform warming only and uniform warming is NOT happening. Looking at average temperature artificially hides what is actually happening.

Critters moving away from global warming faster | Long Island Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — Animals across the world are fleeing global warming by heading north much faster than they were less than a decade ago, a new study says.

About 2,000 species examined are moving away from the equator at an average rate of more than 15 feet per day, about a mile per year, according to new research published Thursday in the journal Science which analyzed previous studies. Species are also moving up mountains to escape the heat, but more slowly, averaging about 4 feet a year.

The species – mostly from the Northern Hemisphere and including plants – moved in fits and starts, but over several decades it averages to about 8 inches an hour away from the equator.

“The speed is an important issue,” said study main author Chris Thomas of the University of York. “It is faster than we thought.”

“It’s already affected the entire planet’s wildlife,” Thomas said in a phone interview. “It’s not a matter that might happen in the lifetime of our children and our grandchildren. If you look in your garden you can see the effects of climate change already.”

NASA and Penn State climate hoax promoters: Reducing our emissions might just save humanity from a pre-emptive alien attack

Aliens may destroy humanity to protect other civilisations, say scientists | Science | The Guardian
Rising greenhouse emissions may tip off aliens that we are a rapidly expanding threat, warns a report for Nasa
...
It may not rank as the most compelling reason to curb greenhouse gases, but reducing our emissions might just save humanity from a pre-emptive alien attack, scientists claim.

Watching from afar, extraterrestrial beings might view changes in Earth's atmosphere as symptomatic of a civilisation growing out of control – and take drastic action to keep us from becoming a more serious threat, the researchers explain.

This highly speculative scenario is one of several described by scientists at Nasa and Pennsylvania State University that, while considered unlikely, they say could play out were humans and alien life to make contact at some point in the future.

Shawn Domagal-Goldman of Nasa's Planetary Science Division and his colleagues compiled a list of plausible outcomes that could unfold in the aftermath of a close encounter, to help humanity "prepare for actual contact".
