Wharton news: NPR's Steve Curwood to promote greatest scientific fraud in history

Titans and titillation
For a different style of spoken word, Wharton has renewed the Worldview Lecture series after a one-year hiatus. Deans from three MSU colleges picked the speakers to dovetail with their curricula...Steve Curwood, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and host of NPR’s environmental program “Life on Earth,” will talk about the economic, social and national security benefits of facing up to global warming Feb. 27.   [Where's the part about Girl Scouts not having to wear life preservers at all times?]

American Thinker: California's Renewable Economic Suicide
Gov. Jerry Brown, flakier now as a recycled geriatric governor than he was as Governor Moonbeam decades ago, has decided to place his state into economic hospice care. By proudly signing legislation that would require California to obtain 33% of its electric power from renewable sources by 2020 -- the Renewable Energy Bill -- he is telegraphing that the state does not have much longer to live.
The planet strikes back: Why we underestimate the Earth and overestimate ourselves | Grist
In his 2010 book Eaarth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet, environmental scholar and activist Bill McKibben writes of a planet so devastated by global warming that it's no longer recognizable as the Earth we once inhabited. This is a planet, he predicts, of "melting poles and dying forests and a heaving, corrosive sea, raked by winds, strafed by storms, scorched by heat." Altered as it is from the world in which human civilization was born and thrived, it needs a new name -- so he gave it that extra "a" in "Eaarth."

THE HOCKEY SCHTICK: Another blow to warmist theory: Decreasing radiation from greenhouse gases
The anthropogenic global warming theory is based upon the notion that increasing 'greenhouse gases' will increase infrared 'back-radiation' to the earth to [supposedly] warm the planet. The theory also claims that increases in the minor 'greenhouse gas' carbon dioxide will cause increases in the major 'greenhouse gas' water vapor to amplify the infrared 'back-radiation' and global warming. A study published online yesterday in The Journal of Climate, however, finds that contrary to the global warming theory, infrared 'back-radiation' from greenhouse gases has declined over the past 14 years in the US Southern Great Plains in winter, summer, and autumn. If the anthropogenic global warming theory was correct, the infrared 'back-radiation' should have instead increased year-round over the past 14 years along with the steady rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Interview: Climate change directly affecting development: former World Bank VP
"This has been now translating into loss of income, into loss of life and loss of livelihood from Pakistan to Australia, to China, all over the world," said Thomas, currently director-general of Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) at the World Bank Group.

According to a recent IEG report, the frequency of disastrous heat waves (such as in Europe in 2003 and in Russia in 2010) and floods (such as Pakistan 2010) may have doubled, due to climate change. Sea level may rise two to five feet this century, imperiling coastal cities, populous deltas and low-lying islands. Unabated, climate change could derail development, with a one-in-fourth chance of an 11 Fahrenheit rise this century.
Panel makes recommendations on NM regulations - BusinessWeek
Bruce Frederick, an attorney with the New Mexico Environmental Law Center, acknowledged that New Mexico can't solve the problems associated with climate change by itself but rescinding the new emissions rules would send the wrong message to other states and the federal government.

"It would send the message that waiting is OK, that waiting is the thing to do," he said. "On the other hand, if these regulations stay on the books and they start to become enforceable, we want to look to exporting those things to other states and hopefully get the federal government to notice. That's how things get done at the federal level."

Like Superman, American University Will Get Its Energy from the Sun | Standard Solar Inc.
WASHINGTON, DC (April 15, 2011) With a mandate for renewable energy in the District of Columbia in place, and a commitment to become carbon neutral by 2020, American University is installing one of the largest solar electricity systems in Washington, D.C. and the largest urban solar hot water system on the east coast.
...
Last spring, American University announced its plans to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions and become a carbon-neutral campus by 2020. AU is reducing energy consumption, using wind power for 100% of its purchased electricity, exploring large-scale renewable energy development in the DC area, and planning to mitigate university travel emissions by supporting carbon offset projects this year. Plans are underway to create renewable energy on campus by installing a wind turbine, designed by an AU professor, to be placed atop a parking garage, and will install a generator that runs on used cooking oil from the campus dining hall.

Electricity from the solar photovoltaic panels will avoid more than 557 tons of carbon per year, the equivalent of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from 57,500 gallons of gasoline annually, or nearly 1 million gallons over twenty years.

Pacific salmon may be dying from leukemia-type virus - Sacramento Living - Sacramento Food and Wine, Home, Health | Sacramento Bee
The salmon run has been highly variable: The worst year came in 2009, with 1.5 million salmon, followed by the best year in 2010, with 30 million salmon. But the overall trend is downward.

Losses were particularly high in elevated river temperatures; warmer water makes it more difficult to deliver oxygen to the tissues of salmon.

Seven of the last 10 summers have been the hottest on record for the Fraser River. But experts say it's too soon to pin the blame on global warming.

"Clearly, a warming climate is going to produce some new stresses for Pacific salmon," said Daniel Schindler, a professor of aquatic and fishery sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle. "Some of those stresses will certainly be expressed through increased susceptibility to disease, including something like this."

Deniers!: 97% of Kenyans say climate change isn't their biggest concern

Kenyans concerned over rising food, fuel prices: - KBC News
Just a day after fuel prices went up, a new opinion poll shows that most Kenyans cited the rising food and fuel prices in the country as their biggest problem.

The latest poll released on Friday by synovate research indicates that 33 percent cited the price of food, the cost of fuel and poverty as their main area of concern.

Synovate Head of Research of Tom Wolf said that a majority of Kenyans are concerned with the high increase in the food prices in the country.

Of those polled, 26 percent said the issue of food, hunger and famine remained the most critical, 9pc cited unemployment, while 6pc said their biggest grouse was politics and the same number cited corruption and bribery.

Three percent said it is climate change , two percent said it is insecurity while one percent cited health, water, housing and education as their biggest problem.
Overviews far from a carbon copy
THE government has sharpened its message this time around, having failed under former prime minister Kevin Rudd to explain the emissions trading scheme adequately.

Gone is the rhetoric about climate change being ''the great moral challenge of our generation'' and the importance of protecting the environment from rising sea levels and one-in-1000-year weather events.

Now the government is spruiking the message that pricing carbon is about ''creating the jobs of the future'' and making the big emitters pay for their contribution to the problem.
...
BusinessDay's survey of the ASX 50 suggests a fair degree of ambivalence towards pricing carbon - or at least a reluctance to discuss it publicly.

Twelve of the 50 backed Canberra's plan to introduce a carbon price, including some of the country's biggest emitters. But this support is heavily qualified, with calls for compensation for trade-exposed, emissions-intensive industries that would be disadvantaged against overseas rivals.

Three companies flatly opposed the move - Woodside, BlueScope and Coca-Cola Amatil. They said Australia should not move before rivals overseas, and pricing carbon threatened already struggling sectors.

There are no standards or emission caps created by the politically accountable branches of our government that courts can apply in determining which of these activities creates a "nuisance" and which does not. The rank absurdity of plaintiffs' claims should be obvious to the justices, who should rule decisively that the federal courts do not possess constitutional jurisdiction over climate change cases.

Nano Patents and Innovations: Climate Change From Black Carbon Depends On Altitude
The team's research involved idealized simulations of adding a theoretical megatonne of black carbon uniformly around the globe at different altitudes in the atmosphere. They found that the addition of black carbon near the land and ocean surface caused the surface to heat. As the altitude of black carbon increased, surface warming decreased. The addition of black carbon to the stratosphere caused the land and oceans to cool. This cooling occurred despite the fact that the black carbon caused the Earth as a whole to absorb more energy from the sun. When black carbon is high in the atmosphere, it can lose its energy to space while helping to shade the land and ocean surface.

Greens "want higher carbon price" | Australian Climate Madness

Bye Bye Bats? | The Resilient Earth
When night falls, many insects come out to feed, often on human food crops. Helping to turn back the pillaging insect hoards is an aerial armada of unsung and unloved heroes—bats. Bats are voracious predators of nocturnal insects, helping to control the populations of many crop and forest pests. Tragically, several migratory tree-dwelling species are being killed in unprecedented numbers by wind turbines across North America. Recent analysis presented in the journal Science suggests that reduced bat populations cause agricultural losses estimated at more than $3.7 billion/year and could rise as high as $53 billion/year if bats are driven to extinction. Oblivious to the carnage being caused by wind turbines, climate change alarmists and green political dupes have continued to push for rapid expansion of wind power. It is time to call a moratorium on wind park construction until a more realistic and less damaging policy can be formulated.

ABC climate hoax promoter weighs in

ABC reporter: Cooperation key to stopping climate change - The Daily Cardinal - News
ABC News climate reporter Bill Blakemore said the public should focus on the ways in which it can combat global warming rather than worry about the specific effects of climate change such as greenhouse gases and warming ocean currents at a lecture Wednesday.

Blakemore said global warming is dangerous and progressing faster than expected, but humans can slow down its progression by changing their current habits that contribute to global warming.

"It's about what will humans do," Blakemore said. "That means it's a psychology story."

He said the United States is not as active in combating global warming as other nations and regions around the world are, specifically China and Europe.

This lack of action, according to Blakemore, is largely due to many Americans remaining in denial about global warming, which he said is undeniably influenced by humans.
Schwarzenegger, Davis tout California's commitment to fighting global warming | 89.3 KPCC
"When we're trying to build renewables out in the desert," said Davis, "and people say, 'Well, I don't like the noise of these wind farms, they're too loud. I don't like the glare of these solar panels, and I don't want a transmission line coming within 5 miles of my property.' Get real! I mean you've got to make choices in life."
...
Schwarzenegger argues reducing dependence on foreign oil is a crucial part of an energy policy adapted to climate change. Trouble is, he says, Democratic and Republican leaders at the national level aren't doing anything about it.

“We have no vision," says Schwarzenegger. "We have no goal. We do not know in Washington right now what do we need 20 years from now how much oil do we need, how much onshore drilling do we need, how much offshore drilling do we need, how much renewable energy do we need, how much energy conservation do we need, how many nuclear plants do we need, we don't know any of that.”
[If we have no vision or goal on energy, why, exactly are we spending so much money on the United States Department of Energy?] - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
President Barack Obama unveiled on May 7 a $26.4 billion budget request for DOE for fiscal year (FY) 2010, including $2.3 billion for the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). The budget aims to substantially expand the use of renewable energy sources while improving energy transmission infrastructure. It also makes significant investments in hybrids and plug-in hybrids, in smart grid technologies, and in scientific research and innovation.[5]

As part of the $789 billion economic stimulus package in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Congress provided Energy with an additional $38.3 billion for fiscal years 2009 and 2010, adding about 75 percent to Energy's annual budgets.

LegalNewsline | Article argues for dismissal of states' global warming case
"At the heart of each issue facing the Supreme Court is the stark reality of what the plaintiffs have asked the federal judiciary to do: set environmental policy for addressing a global issue through party-driven litigation, on a piecemeal basis with the distinct likelihood of conflicting decisions, rather than through politically accountable legislative or administrative processes," DeLaquil and Rivkin write.

The scientific issues at hand are "complex" and "contentious," the lawyers argue. "Federal judges are selected for their legal acumen, not their scientific expertise, and it does the public and judiciary a disservice to require them to decide such exceptionally complicated scientific disputes," they add.
Andrew Klavan: A New Definition of Science | Benzinga.com
To me, global warming is a problem that ranks in seriousness just below the issue of what color pocket handkerchief I'll be wearing to the royal wedding... and no, I'm not invited... and if I were, I wouldn't wear a pocket handkerchief. But as I've read about and investigated the matter, there always seemed to me to be a scintilla of a sliver of a scrap of a possibility that there might be something to it. This article by former climate alarmist David Evans from last week's Financial Post is the clearest debunking of the whole thing I've yet read and may be the last word on the subject I ever read:
The whole idea that carbon dioxide is the main cause of the recent global warming is based on a guess that was proved false by empirical evidence during the 1990s. But the gravy train was too big, with too many jobs, industries, trading profits, political careers, and the possibility of world government and total control riding on the outcome. So rather than admit they were wrong, the governments, and their tame climate scientists, now outrageously maintain the fiction that carbon dioxide is a dangerous pollutant.
The article goes into precise and concise detail on what is happening and why - short, to the point and perfect for us non-scientists. It seems to me we need a new definition of science: theory supported by observation and experimentation over-ridden by money.

Sales pitch for carbon tax unleashes a dog of a proposition
''One million people will be better off'' is the USP with which the Minister for Climate Change, Greg Combet, hopes to persuade the public to buy his shiny new carbon tax.

I almost choked on my 100 per cent natural grain Wheaties. This must be a really crappy product.

There can be only one genuine way to sell the carbon tax, and that is by advertising the fact that it will prevent anthropogenic warming. It's like Mortein. I buy it because I have a nasty problem that needs eradicating. Excessive CO2 emissions around your home? Stop them dead with the new carbon tax! Available at all good stores.

It's instructive to think of how the GST was sold to a less than enthusiastic public. Basically, it was the castor oil strategy - this stuff is going to taste slightly unpleasant, but it's going to do us all a power of (economic) good. And it worked. Arguably that is the only honest way of selling the carbon tax, too. Self-sacrifice for the greater good. In this case, of mankind.

Yet despite all the political shenanigans of the past few years and a massive teaser campaign for more than a decade (rising sea-levels, end of the world, Al Gore) "the greater good" is not the USP with which the government has chosen to sell this product.

Which must mean, to put it bluntly, that the product doesn't work.

Bezymianny the next high latitude impact volcano? «
Climatologists may disagree on how much the recent global warming is natural or manmade but there is general agreement that volcanism constitutes a wildcard in climate, producing significant global scale cooling for at least a few years following significant eruptions. However, there are some interesting seasonal and regional variations of the effects.

Oman and Robock (2003) and others have shown that though major volcanic eruptions seem to have their greatest cooling effect in the summer months, the location of the volcano determines whether the winters are colder or warmer over large parts of North America and Eurasia. According to Oman, tropical region volcanoes like El Chichon and Pinatubo actually produce a warming in winter due to a tendency for a more positive North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Arctic Oscillation (AO) – below left top and bottom. In the positive phase of these large scale pressure oscillations, low pressure and cold air is trapped in high latitudes and the resulting more westerly jet stream winds drives milder maritime air into the continents.
Volcano Eruptions & Climate Change | Extreme Cold Winters, Weather & Climate Extremes | Laki Volcano, Iceland | Our Amazing Planet
The eruption of a volcano in Iceland is often blamed for the unusually harsh winter of 1783 to 1784 around the North Atlantic. But new research lays the blame for the extreme cold elsewhere.

Scientists find that the extremes of cold back then might actually have been triggered by the same climate effects potentially responsible for the unusually cold and snowy winter that Europe and North America experienced from 2009 to 2010.

These new findings shed light on how extremes in natural variability in climate have played — and still play — a key role in our world today, along with any recent global warming effects, the researchers said.
