Global warming and the dog that didn't barkGlobal warming as a media scare story began more or less in England, with Margaret Thatcher needing a convenient tool to fight coal miners and push for her preferred energy solution, nuclear power. Her assistant, a certain Viscount Monckton, suggested she investigate global warming as a possible tool. it worked. And it spread, becoming a tool to advance partisan political agendas, competing technology solutions and a Trojan horse for many who wanted to orient aid and action towards the needs of the third world. If any of this proves to be true, we will have sacrificed an awful lot for very little.
Roger L. Simon » “Goin’ to Chicago”… for the Climate ConferenceYes, this is largely a climate skeptics’ event. Not that Al couldn’t have come. Capitalism Is the Cause of Climate Illness! | Dissident VoiceFor these days we 35,000 people were of one common mind: unity against capitalism and its depravities. We hope that environmentalists and others around the world will listen to our conclusions and draw from them the understanding that as long as capitalism exists, our planet will continue dying and one day no life will awake.
RealClimate: What we can learn from studying the last millennium (or so)Thus we can basically say that the warmer conditions of the Medieval era were tied to higher solar output and few volcanic eruptions and the cooler conditions of the Little Ice Age resulted from lower solar output and more frequent volcanic eruptions.
...
Other model simulations, however, using a climate model that exhibits a particular tropical Pacific mechanism, do reproduce such a response. In such models, the tropical Pacific counter-intuitively tends to the cold La Niña phase during periods of increased heating, such as provided by the increase in solar output and low volcanism of the Medieval era. If this response holds for the future, something that is still vigorously debated, it could imply a more La Niña-like response in the future. Most of the state-of-the-art climate models, e.g. those used in the IPCC Fourth Assessment, by contrast, suggest the opposite–a more El Niño-like future climate. The credibility of the models with regard to this phenomenon is not high, however, and lots more work is going to be needed (both on paleo-reconstructions and model improvements) before we can be confident in the future projections of changes in ENSO-like dynamics and mean state.
American Thinker Blog: The Heartland Climate Conference Smear Campaign BeginsSo while Heartland is as oil-free as acne wash, the CRU is dripping in green-fantasy-power-ooze money, which gives them an undeniably intrinsic financial interest in the promotion of AGW. And yet, MSM articles and reports (not to mention those of the hallowed IPCC) are awash with the manipulated data, charts, and projections generated by this blatantly biased organization. Is anyone really buying our HuffPo hero’s assertion that the “lack of press interest” in the Heartland conference is based primarily on the MSM’s scruples regarding funding conflicts?

Big Global Warming Case Hinges on Weird Procedural Technicality | Cato @ LibertyMississippi homeowners sued 34 energy companies and utilities operating in the Gulf Coast for damage sustained to their property during Hurricane Katrina. The homeowners alleged that the defendants had emitted greenhouse gases, which increased the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which contributed to global warming, which accelerated the melting of glaciers, which raised the global sea level, which increased the frequency and severity of hurricanes, which caused the destructive force of Hurricane Katrina.

The damage to lawns this past winter was not from record-low temperatures, but from sustained low temperatures that persisted even through the usually warm month of March, said Dave Dymond, general manager of H&H Sod in Osceola County and a past president of the Florida Sod Growers Cooperative.

The Golden Arches and Energy Policy | Transit MiamiThis morning CNBC reported that 65% of McDonalds’ sales are derived from their drive-thru business. As long as we have drive-thrus in this country we can pretty much forget about any real serious energy policy.
[We're all gonna die: Average American burns 1/6 gallon of gas annually waiting in drive-thrus]The good people at the Sierra Club point out that “the average McDonald's drive-through wait is 159 seconds, [so] we can calculate that the company's consumers burn some 7.25 million gallons of gas each year. The figure for the entire US fast-food industry? Roughly 50 million gallons.” The club contends that expansion by fast food chains in China and India will boost that burn rate to 30 billion gallons a year.
These worries have sparked a mad dash to rid municipalities across North America of drive-thrus.

But spending my days and nights trying to get our country to tackle global warming is more emotionally demanding than any job I have ever done.

» Trying To Ridicule ‘Climate Change’ Skeptics, Green-Bloggers Come a Cropper - Big JournalismThe thing that motivates people like Spencer, McIntyre, Watts and thousands of their colleagues in the sciences (including yours truly) is not non-existent oil money, nor is it a belief that those scientists with whom we disagree are part of vast global conspiracy. Rather, it’s a simple question of to what conclusion does the science actually lead?
Irony | Climate SkepticIt strikes me that a real scientific magazine that was actually seeking truth would, if it wanted to dedicate a whole issue to the climate debate, actually create a print debate between skeptics and alarmists to educate its readers. If the alarmist case is so obvious, and its readers so smugly superior in their intellect, surely this would be the most powerful possible way to debunk skeptics. Instead, the New Scientist chose, in a phrase I saw the other day and loved, to take a flamethrower to a field of straw men.

Kerry’s New Cap and Trade Bill Screws Non-Union Labor and Construction Companies | RedStateAfter sifting through the “lawyer-speak” what the Executive Order 13502 part of the Kerry bill does, is empower the Secretaries of Labor and Energy to funnel federal contracts to unionized contractors. Joseph Romm: That technique is called the Gish Gallup. It was invented by a Creationist. You talk fast, interrupt and throw out a non-stop stream of one-line lies or half-truths. There’s not much one can do about that technique, because in a debate you can’t constantly say, “That’s false, that’s false, that’s false.” Every one of those sentences takes a paragraph to rebut. So again you’re left in this realm of what you don’t rebut goes unrebutted. When you do rebut you use up all of your time. So I don’t think there’s anything productive to be gained by those debates. People really need to stick their necks out in order to make the self-correction process of science happen. It doesn't happen by itself.

Kerry-Lieberman’s Great American Rip-off « Green Hell BlogThere are only three things you need to know about the Kerry-Lieberman cap-and-trade bill that was released Wednesday—it will accomplish nothing for the environment; it will cost a lot of money and it will financially enrich and politically empower a host of scoundrels.
#38) The Syracuse Sizzle Discussion with Marc Morano, Ruth Yanai, Mark Meisner, and Randy Olson | The Benshi...while some people might think it’s wrong to allow a climate skeptic to speak publicly, the fact is you can hear the Syracuse students in the Q&A using the opportunity to try and grasp how the mind of a climate skeptic works — how, in the face of so much science [like what, specifically?], can you possibly claim it’s mostly untrue? If nothing else, that exercise for them was valuable because, as they said, they are deeply ensconced in an environmental program where everyone thinks pretty much exactly the same way on such major issues. It is good for them to hear a little diversity in the voices they are exposed to.
Interview With A Global Warming Skeptic: Dr. Roy Spencer[Q] Is CO2 a pollutant?
[A] No, since atmospheric carbon dioxide is necessary for life on Earth, I do not consider it a “pollutant”. Considering this fact, it is amazing that there is so little of it: only 40 out of every 100,000 molecules of air are CO2, and it takes 5 years to increase than number by 1 through the burning of fossil fuels. It might well turn out that more CO2 is, on the whole, good for life on Earth. Hundreds of scientific papers have demonstrated this for various types of plants, and we are beginning to see research that the same might be true for the oceans as well.
Global Warming’s $64 Trillion Question « Roy Spencer, Ph. D.As my latest book describes, I contend that they have been fooled by Mother Nature, and that in fact warming alters clouds in ways that mitigate – not amplify — the small amount of direct warming caused by increasing atmospheric CO2.
The difference between clouds magnifying versus mitigating warming could be the difference between global warming being little more than an academic curiosity…or a disaster for life on Earth.
The American Power Act Is a Global Power Grab - Glenn Beck - FOXNews.comThe earth has a temperature, a boo-boo. But we can sing the praises of the Lord Almighty God because he has sent us his prophets, Brother Kerry and Brother Lieberman, to heal the planet. They introduced a new climate bill today. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. The bill has a new name. It's cap-and-trade. No, no, wait, wait. It's not cap-and-trade. I can't get those off my mind. Don't think of this as a climate bill or cap-and-trade. Don't. No, no. It's America's Power Act. Oh. Look at the pretty logo they introduced today, too. Come on! Oh, does that bring tears to your — it's just so patriotic.

Op-Ed Contributor - A Bad Bet On Carbon Capture - NYTimes.comFor some, carbon capture and sequestration will remain the Holy Grail of carbon-reduction strategies. There's no right and wrong to tackling climate change | Mike Hulme | guardian.co.ukNeither scientists nor politicians should try to discredit unorthodox views about how to respond to climate change by using the pejorative labels of 'denialist' or 'flat-earther'. Scientists must learn to respect their public audiences and to listen more closely to them. Now is no time for the elite to despair of democracy. We have only one planet, but we also have only one political system that most people would choose to live under. Politicians must learn not to hide behind science when asked to make complex judgements. Science is useful as a form of systematic critical enquiry into the functioning of the physical world, but it is not a substitute for political judgement, negotiation and compromise.

Democrats’ Energy Bill Adds Gasoline Tax - HUMAN EVENTSSenators John Kerry and Joe Lieberman unveiled a new energy bill on Wednesday which includes a new tax on gasoline, but the overall measure drew sharp criticism from both sides of the aisle.
Flashback: Kerry: Gas Tax? What Gas Tax? | Mother JonesYesterday Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) attempted to squash the idea he and his colleagues have ever contemplated including a gas tax in the climate bill. "There is no gas tax, never was a gas tax, will not be a gas tax, I don’t know where that came from, but it is just wrong. Period,” he told reporters. "There is not even a linked fee, there is not a tax, there is nothing similar."

The political situation for climate change looks genuinely dire. Kerry and Lieberman lost their alliance with Lindsey Graham, they're competing with financial regulation and jobs and Greece, the election is muscling its way into the headlines and they're getting no backup from the White House. President Obama has not used the BP spill to advance the cause, and today, one day after Kerry and Lieberman released their bill, he's in Buffalo talking jobs, not climate. So they don't have the votes, the bipartisan coalition or the bully pulpit.

Comments On The Scientifically Flawed Study “Researchers Find Future Temperatures Could Exceed Livable Limits” By Sherwood and Huber 2010 « Climate Science: Roger Pielke Sr.The Sherwood and Huber paper is just a model sensitivity study, not a verifiable prediction. Moreover, not only is it scientifically flawed, but the dissemination of a press release illusrates that this is really not a science study. The funding of such a study by the National Science Foundation (whose predictions cannot be verified) illustrates another failure by the NSF to properly support climate science.

Swift action unlikely on climate billSen. John Kerry, D-Mass., introduced today a nearly 1,000 page climate and energy bill which hit the Senate floor with a resounding thud. Despite a politically savvy Christmas tree of political appeals to various energy and environmental interests, the proposed legislation has all the chances of passage as the proverbial snowball in the Sahara. Democrats have a better chance of passage of banking reform than they do to limit climate emissions and make some sense out of U.S. energy policy.

In other words, by century’s end, reducing U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 83% will only result in global temperatures being one-fifth of one degree Fahrenheit less than they would otherwise be. Lancaster played a con man Bill Starbuck, who comes into a drought-stricken small town promising to bring forth water from the skies like so much manna.
