Gore takes cash for water campaign from chemical firm - Americas, World - The Independent
Al Gore, the self-styled squeakiest-clean and deepest-green politician in American history, has some explaining to do this weekend. His environmental organisation has taken money to raise awareness about the need for clean water from a controversial chemicals company involved in the aftermath of one of the world's worst pollution disasters.

Less popular, at least among the people of Greenland, is the eco-campaign group Greenpeace, which is reviled there for blocking the import in the west of seal products. The aim was to end the clubbing of baby seals off Newfoundland but the move made it impossible for Inuit to sell sealskin taken in their own separate hunts of adult seals, an injustice and an insult by "ignorant southerners", says Anderson.

As is reflected in so many political tragedies, from Macbeth to Watergate, it is often not the original dark act itself which leads to nemesis but the later attempts to “trammel up the consequence”. Nothing will do more to reinforce suspicion of the CRU’s conduct than the failure, first by those MPs, and now by the team led by Lord Oxburgh, to address properly the way in which it appears to have abused the principles of true science – a scandal which should be of concern not just to us here in Britain, who paid for it, but across the world.

Electric current is electric current. However, in a country like Germany, the price that utilities are required to pay for electric current varies based on its source. While electricity from, say, a diesel generator gets 4-5 Euro cents per KwH, ground-based solar gets about 48 Euro cents per KwH. This is a 10x greater price paid solely for absolutely identical power manufactured in a different way. So of course there is going to be fraud as to the current’s source.

To drive home his point, Friedman said, "It is not a coincidence that we had the meltdowns of Citibank, the national economy of Iceland and the near extinction of the polar bear because of the melting polar ice cap all at the same time.
...
Friedman said that regarding the issue of "global warming" or "climate change" he is somewhere in between former Vice President Al Gore's position and more centrist positions. "But I am like (former Vice President) Dick Cheney was on the possibility that if there was even a 1 percent chance that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, it was important to prevent him from using them. And I feel that if there is even a 1 percent chance that we face an environmental catastrophe due to climate chance, then we must do all we can to prevent it from happening."

Regarding those who question whether climate change is a real threat, Friedman said. "It's not just a bunch of extreme Al Gore stuff. Our global temperature is going up 2 or 3 degrees Fahrenheit a year since the Industrial Revolution. If you think this is no big deal, think about a person whose body temperature goes from 98 to 102, who becomes very sick, or at 106, who will go to intensive care. What is true for a person is true for the world."

I’ve begun focusing on younger audiences for many reasons, one being a growing realization that many adults I’ve met in 20 years of covering global warming have been locked into rigid views of the world that distort how they absorb what scientists are saying—with some grown-ups seeing utter unfolding catastrophe and others aggressively rejecting any reason for concern or action. In most cases, those reactions were more a function of belief than data.  [How, exactly, does Andy know this?]

Goats still used in religious rituals

[Google uses goats in an attempt to prevent bad weather]
Last year, in our quest to minimize our carbon footprint (and keep people on their toes), we turned to an unlikely solution for mowing an overgrown field: goats. More than 200 goats from California Grazing have once again arrived at our Mountain View headquarters where they’ll stay for over a week chomping away on grassy goodness. The cost of bringing in the goats is comparable to hiring lawn mowers for the same job and the green benefits are clear: the goats eliminate mower emissions, reduce noise pollution, restore plant species and fertilize while grazing.

“Missing” Heat May Affect Future Climate Change
Newswise — Current observational tools cannot account for roughly half of the heat that is believed to have built up on Earth in recent years, according to a “Perspectives” article in this week’s issue of Science. Scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) warn in the new study that satellite sensors, ocean floats, and other instruments are inadequate to track this “missing” heat, which may be building up in the deep oceans or elsewhere in the climate system.

“The heat will come back to haunt us sooner or later,” says NCAR scientist Kevin Trenberth, the lead author. “The reprieve we’ve had from warming temperatures in the last few years will not continue. It is critical to track the build-up of energy in our climate system so we can understand what is happening and predict our future climate.”

Looks like a Senate climate bill will not be unveiled the week of Earth Day after all. The new goal for Senate Foreign Relations Chairman John Kerry, D-Mass., and Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Joe Lieberman, I/D-Conn., to publicly release a potential deal is April 26, sources said.

Earlier this week, Graham explained why the bill would not be released on Earth Day, April 22. "One, we're not ready," he said. Second, he said, the message "had been driven by global warming policy" but is now domestic energy policy, job creation and cleaner air.

"It is critical that a sufficient number of allowances are set aside for EITE industries in order to provide the kind of certainty that will lead to investment in U.S. facilities," they wrote.

They also ask bill authors John Kerry, D-Mass.; Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.; and Joe Lieberman, I/D-Conn., for "an automatically triggered" border tax on "imports from countries that do not have in place comparable greenhouse gas emissions reduction requirements to those adopted by the United States."
