Forget all of the studies for a moment. I used to operate power plants. Any traditional capacity (fossil fuel, nuclear) except perhaps gas turbines takes on the order of a day or more to start up – if you don’t take that long, the thermal stresses alone will blow the whole place up. During the whole startup and shutdown, and through any “standby” time, the plant is burning fuel. Since we don’t have a good wind energy storage system, some percentage of wind capacity must be backed up with hot standby, because it can disappear in an instant. We are learning now, contrary to earlier assumptions, that wind speeds can be correlated pretty highly over wide geographies, meaning that spreading the wind turbines out does not necessarily do a lot to reduce the standby needs. And since plant startups take time, even gas turbines take some time to get running, the percentage of wind power that required hot backup is pretty high — I would love to find this percentage.

I found at least one source for such a percentage, which posits that for England, the percentage of hot backup needed is as high as 80%...

The Gore-man Show
In many ways, Al Gore and his colleagues of the “man-made climate change” community have engineered a scam of a show much like Christof did to Truman. Originally coined “man-made global-warming,” Gore and his friends at the Climate Change Unit at the University of East Anglia have been creating a completely false world based on fraudulent data and lies to cover the facts.

"Real"Climate: [You should be "frightened" by trace amounts of natural atmospheric gas]
CO2 is plenty to be frightened of, while methane is frosting on the cake. Imagine you are in a Toyota on the highway at 60 miles per hour approaching stopped traffic, and you find that the brake pedal is broken. This is CO2. Then you figure out that the accelerator has also jammed, so that by the time you hit the truck in front of you, you will be going 90 miles per hour instead of 60. This is methane. Is now the time to get worried? No, you should already have been worried by the broken brake pedal. Methane sells newspapers, but it’s not the big story, nor does it look to be a game changer to the big story, which is CO2.

American Thinker: Theories, Facts, and 'Denialism'
The psychological term for attributing one's own trickery and failings onto others is "Projection."

This describes "Denialism" perfectly: projection of the dishonest, illiberal, and anti-intellectual tactics of the Enviro-Inquisition onto those "eco-heretics" who dare to question, however politely and intelligently, these dedicated adherents of the One True Faith.

This corruption of science is an object lesson to the rest of us never to hesitate to look with a gimlet eye at those who are more skilled in the use of invective than rational argument. The truth need not express itself with a sneer.
American Thinker: Activist Science
The earth's inhabitants are asked to forgo their prosperity, security, and even survival on the basis of an inconclusive and doubtful scientific "consensus." The public is now aware of the fact that it has been conned, and it is time to move toward the next logical step: the undoing of millions of pages of laws, regulations, and restrictions on those industries upon which life and well-being depend.
The green god is dead
Given recent climate frauds, it is clear that partisan ideologies and cultish environmentalism have replaced prudent science and economic realities in climate policy. What is also clear is that environmentalism no longer offers any product or service in support of our future security and prosperity. Militant environmentalism and green-obsessed bureaucrats have become an “axis of antagonism” that we can no longer afford. Yes, the Green God has died from its own hubris and corruption. May it, and its extremists, rest in peace.

[Steven F. Hayward] The meltdown of the climate campaign.
...
“In the final [post-problem] stage,” Downs concluded, “an issue that has been replaced at the center of public concern moves into a prolonged limbo—a twilight realm of lesser attention or spasmodic recurrences of interest.” The death rattle of the climate campaign will be deafening. It has too much political momentum and fanatical devotion to go quietly. The climate campaigners have been fond of warning of catastrophic “tipping points” for years. Well, a tipping point has indeed arrived—just not the one the climate campaigners expected.

The lingering question is whether the collapse of the climate campaign is also a sign of a broader collapse in public enthusiasm for environmentalism in general. Ted Nordhaus and Michael Shellenberger, two of the more thoughtful and independent-minded figures in the environmental movement, have been warning their green friends that the public has reached the point of “apocalypse fatigue.” They’ve been met with denunciations from the climate campaign enforcers for their heresy. The climate campaign has no idea that it is on the cusp of becoming as ludicrous and forlorn as the World -Esperanto Association.

Hydrothermal vents discovered off Antarctica
Scientists at Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory have found evidence of hydrothermal vents on the seafloor near Antarctica, formerly a blank spot on the map for researchers wanting to learn more about seafloor formation and the bizarre life forms drawn to these extreme environments.

Hydrothermal vents spew volcanically heated seawater [can they warm as much Antarctic seawater as my northern-hemisphere iPod charger?] from the planet's underwater mountain ranges -- the vast mid-ocean ridge system, where lava erupts and new crust forms. Chemicals dissolved in those vents influence ocean chemistry and sustain a complex web of organisms, much as sunlight does on land. In recent decades more than 220 vents have been discovered worldwide, but so far no one has looked for them in the rough and frigid waters off Antarctica.

The study, by senior scientists from the Met Office Hadley Centre, Edinburgh University, Melbourne University and Victoria University in Canada, concluded that there was an “increasingly remote possibility” that the sceptics were right that human activities were having no discernible impact. There was a less than 5 per cent likelihood that natural variations in climate were responsible for the changes.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, exactly 100 days after the AGW alarmism largely collapsed, the Met Office just found the fingerprints of Man imprinted everywhere in the climate. Because there hadn't been any fingerprints before the paper, we must ask: How did they realize this ambitious goal? ;-)

EU Referendum: Five times the cost of the Manhattan Project
If we take all the Annex 1 countries, the sum expended must be well over $100 billion.

That, in terms of equivalent spending, is about five times the cost of the wartime Manhattan Project to build the atomic bomb – then the most expensive ever project. It rather puts the current effort in perspective, especially as we seem to have very little to show for it, other than a very large number of academics bought and paid-for by the climate change lobby.
EU Referendum: They just don't get it
After all these years, they have been completely submerged in their own propaganda, to the extent that they cannot drag themselves free of it. Global "warming" is not and cannot be an "observable" fact. The very concept of a global temperature is an artefact, and the recorded figures are statistical constructs – of extremely dubious provenance.

The more they struggle to deny that their religion is a belief system, the more evident it becomes that that is precisely what it is.
Slow warming now makes predictions about 2100 less likely
Every year that passes with a lower rate of warming makes long range predictions of severe temperature rises much less likely.

Gutting the credibiltiy of question? « the Air Vent
I’m curious how they will gut the credibility of people who question the science conclusions, while simultaneously hiding, modifying, and suppressing inconvenient data and exaggerating results. This should be a really special trick. My guess is that planning a fifty thousand dollar ad in a left wing paper won’t have that big an effect. It would make a fun blog post though, which we can then use to mock it — for free.

Only in climate science can this be considered true genius.

This is important, because any strategy for stabilization of atmospheric CO2 is completely dependent on our understanding of the carbon cycle.

It is nature's coupling between the temporary, short-lived atmospheric reservoir, with 0.5 x 1017 moles CO2, and the relatively enormous oceanic reservoir, with 30 x 1017 moles of dissolved (and hydrolyzed and protolyzed) CO2 in contact with calcium carbonate, that determines the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. This coupling is in turn coupled to the much larger lithospheric reservoir. The rates and fluxes of the latter coupling control the amount of carbon in the surface reservoir of the Earth. All kinds of measurements show that the real residence time of atmospheric CO2 is about 5 years.

Prosecuting climate fraud – 1 « TWAWKI
Prosecuting climate communism fraud. Countries typically have a constitution that is there to protect the rights and freedoms of its citizens. Most of those rights and freedoms are recurrently being violated and removed through the green fraud of AGW. People have had enough and are taking the fight to a new level – not only will we see the fall of political parties but many will quite likely go to jail for the ongoing carbon fraud of selling the hot air indulgences to allay peoples supposed climate guilt!
The Climate Article The New York Times Editors Did Not Want You To See « The Unbearable Nakedness of CLIMATE CHANGE
The article finally appeared online in the early AM GMT hour of 3 March, titled “Scientists Taking Steps to Defend Work on Climate“. Tellingly, the structure has been heavily changed, and the interviewees as well. I have had a series of e-mail exchanges with Mr Broder today and won’t report any of them. The impression remains that some Editor at the NYT panicked (**) after reading the IHT version, and got Mr Broder or some sub-editor to rewrite it almost from scratch to eliminate some inconvenient names and acquire warmist respectability by giving the concluding remarks to Gavin Schmidt (*).

All in all, it has been an episode wholly consistent with an atmosphere of climate bullying at the NYT.
