Editorial - Climate Change and the S.E.C. - NYTimes.com
At the same time, ordinary stockholders and state insurance regulators have begun expressing increasing [or decreasing] alarm about the potential cost of unchecked climate change for American businesses. The S.E.C. action is simply one more incentive for investors and managers to better understand the risks — and the opportunities — out there for publicly traded businesses.

"In any academic publication changes to published text to correct errors or to clarify require the subsequent publication of a formal erratum or corrigendum.

"This is to ensure the integrity of the literature and a paper trail, otherwise confusion would result if past work could be quietly rewritten.

"Such a practice is very much a whitewash of the historical record.

"One would assume – and expect – that studies designed to inform government (and international) policy would be held to at least these same standards if not higher standards."

that policy. It's been put forward by a man who's happy to let

Climate change deceit close to making the Pachauri extinct « Autonomous Mind
Changing the figurehead will not change the structure or integrity of the ship. The SS IPCC might look a little different, but its crew and destination will remain the same. Even when Pachauri has finally been pushed, or discovers enough humility to jump, the battle against political agendas masquerading as environmentalism will need to continue. The battle against Pachauri is one to expose the reality of the situation for a worldwide public that has been deceived for so long. But in reality it is a battle against the whole IPCC and the small corrupt cabal of core scientists who produce ‘reports’ generated using cherry picked data, that are then used by thousands of others as the baseline in climate science. We have a long way to go to drain the IPCC swamp and see the truth that is well hidden below the surface.
Coral in Florida Keys suffers lethal hit from cold
Given the depth and duration of frigid weather, Meaghan Johnson, marine science coordinator for The Nature Conservancy, expected to see losses. But she was stunned by what she saw when diving a patch reef 2.5 miles off Harry Harris Park in Key Largo.

Star and brain corals, large species that can take hundreds of years to grow, were as white and lifeless as bones, frozen to death. There were also dead sea turtles, eels and parrotfish littering the bottom.
...
Cold-water bleaching is unusual, last occurring in 1977, the year it snowed in Miami. It killed hundreds of acres of staghorn and elkhorn corals across the Keys. Neither species has recovered, both becoming the first corals to be federally listed as threatened in 2006.

This big chill, said Causey, shapes up worse.

"They were exposed to temperatures much colder, that went on longer, than what they were exposed to three decades ago," he said.
High heat bills fuel anger among APCo customers
In Madison Heights, customer Christopher Mathews got a $422 bill. He got angry enough that he decided to take action. On Monday he plans to e-mail hundreds of people asking them to contact state lawmakers to speak against APCo.

Mathews said he would like to see laws that rein in rate increases by bringing in competition or simply limiting rate hikes.

In addition to laws, he hopes APCo customers send the company a message by buying less electricity. "I don't think they deserve people's money," he said. "I think people should boycott them and get wind turbines."
So much wasted green for climate-change [scam] talks
I asked Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill about the $2,200-a-day tab. "We don't get to pick the hotel we stay in," he answered; the State Department picks hotels for congressional delegations, and it chose a five-star Marriott with a six-night minimum during the summit. Hence, the $4,406 per-room tab for a 48-hour stay. My journalist pal Ola Tedin of Ystad, Sweden, suggested, "They would have found a better deal in Malmö, Sweden," where many attendees stayed. No, I am told, the delegation worked nonstop and didn't have time for the 35-minute train ride.

As for the air fares, Hammill explained they are "government rate." Government rate means that taxpayers fork over as much as $10,000 for a flight that could be purchased online for $800. "Government rate," then, is D.C.-speak for: Money is no object.

No worries on the greenhouse gases spewed to fuel the trek. The House bought "offsets" for the journey's emissions. Of course, that very act explains why so many Americans have come to doubt global warming true believers: Their great crusade is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, yet they globe-trot to be seen with each other and produce meaningless pieces of paper. Then they tell others that their exhaust fumes don't stink because, like sinners purchasing indulgences, they offset their vapor trail - with other people's money.
Rudd all talk and no ticker: Abbott
''If [climate change] really is the greatest enemy that humanity faces, how can it be enough to reduce emissions by just 5 per cent in a decade or by 60 per cent over four decades by which time the real challenge will surely be dealing with disaster rather than avoiding it?'' Mr Abbott said.
Monckton stokes the global warming fire
Following yesterday's luncheon he said the media and general public in Australia were more welcoming than he had expected and the number of followers had been "staggering".

"I'd expected (the media) to be more hostile," Lord Monckton said.

"I think Australia is thinking much more carefully about climate change than probably its government is."

Revealed: the racy novel written by the world's most powerful climate [fraud] scientist - Telegraph
The novel was launched amid much fanfare with Bollywood stars and wealthy industrialists in attendance, a reflection of Dr Pachauri’s esteemed status in the country.

He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, on behalf of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

In the acknowledgement of his novel, Dr Pachauri admits to writing the book while flying around the world between meetings as IPCC chairman or else in his capacity as head of a research institute in Delhi.

But with calls for him to resign over academic blunders in the reports he presides over, some critics will question whether he should have devoted more time to scrutinising the science behind the reports.

Global warming: Fighting on too many fronts
Although the IPCC and its defenders seem beleaguered and beset right about now, it's good to remember the saying about God fighting on the side of the biggest battalions. After all, we call their position the 'consensus' because they [allegedly] have more people on their side.

The skeptics are fewer in number and have fewer resources to commit to the fray. This is why the skeptic argument seems to proceed in jerky stops and starts--there's not only no central direction, individual initiatives are often part of a single scientist's (or blogger's) program--but not the only part.

Obama on defensive, US climate Bill in retreat - Special Report - Sunday TOI - Home - The Times of India
Amid such a welter of concerns and special interests, the ACES Act (also known as the Waxman-Markey Bill after its sponsors who guided it through the House of Representatives) looks like being stymied in the Senate, even though the historic 219-212 House vote last year was the first time US lawmakers had approved a Bill meant to curb the heat-trapping gases that scientists have linked to climate change. But with the political atmosphere in Washington turning increasingly toxic, and President Obama's loss of prestige and momentum following the electoral setback in Massachusetts (where his party lost a liberal Kennedy pocketborough), there's a distinct loss of appetite for the Bill in the Senate, which has to pass the legislation and reconcile it with the House version for it to become law.

The public divide appears to be increasing in this country, the United Kingdom and elsewhere. This seminar will focus on the role of the media in communicating about climate change science, policy and politics to the general public and the influence on public opinion. The [Feb 4] seminar will look at ways to improve the public dialogue over climate change.

If the crusade prevails over the climate skeptics and infidels, trillions of dollars of resources will be diverted from necessary energy and industrial projects into carbon trading scams and billion dollar gifts to third world dictators.
Climategate: confusion over the law in email case - Telegraph
The Commission is thus impaled on a hook of its own devising. By admitting that serious offences were committed, it is now legally obliged to bring charges. And if these were brought under the 1977 Criminal Law Act, alleging that the offences amounted to a conspiracy to defy the law, there is no time limit anyway.

The real mystery therefore is how the Commission came to misread the very Act which brought it into being. Undoubtedly a successful prosecution involving such world-ranking scientists would be extraordinarily embarrassing, not just to the Government but to the entire global warming cause. So what has persuaded the Commission not to do its duty?
The Politics of Nature « the Air Vent
Recently Nature has published multiple editorials which will appeal to the consensus scientists of a certian political view so prevalent in climate science. In reading them, these people have completely lost contact with the real world. So in order to help those who have not been paying attention, I’ve included a proper interpretation of what the article is saying.

Before I get started, Nature is continuing the coverup and propagandization of the climategate emails. In covering the truth, they apparently are complicit co-conspirators and open supporters of the corruption recently exposed in climate science. Their attempted coverup of the truth followed by an open advocacy of leftist govenrnment that hints at the breadth of the true problem. The editorial is funny though when it explains that it’s the public’s lack of understanding that creates the problem, not the proposed political system itself. Didn’t Mao say something like that?
Amazongate: new evidence of the IPCC's failures - Telegraph
Most disturbing of all are the glimpses the story gives of the inner workings of the IPCC, an institution now so discredited and scientifically corrupted that only those determined to shut their eyes could possibly defend it. This is now compounded by the recent revelations by Dr North and myself in these pages of how its chairman, Dr Pachauri, has built a worldwide network of business links which provide his Delhi institute with a sizeable income.

It is noticeable how many of those now calling for Dr Pachauri's resignation, led by Professor Andrew Weaver, a senior IPCC insider, are passionate global warming believers. Fearing that Pachauri damages their cause, they want him thrown overboard in the hope of saving the IPCC itself. But it is not just Pachauri who has been holed below the waterline. So has the entire IPCC process. And beyond that – and despite the pleading of Barack Obama, Gordon Brown and the BBC that none of this detracts from the evidence for man-made global warming – so has the warmist cause itself. Bereft of scientific or moral authority, the most expensive show the world has ever seen may soon be nearing its end.
U.S. Media Silent as Climate Scandals Continue (Wizbang)
Bad science done using bad data to start with is a recipe for disaster. Or, perhaps more to the point, is a recipe for being able to manipulate public opinion. The scientific method is a way of discovering observable truths about the world around us. To use it as a propaganda machine is shameful and the mainstream media's silence on the story is doubly so.

China Insists That Its Steps on Climate [Hoax] Be Voluntary - NYTimes.com
BEIJING — As a Sunday target date approaches for countries to submit to the United Nations their plans for fighting climate change, China is banding together with other major developing nations to stress that only the wealthier countries need to make internationally binding commitments.

So while China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, might put down in writing its targets for slowing the growth of emissions, it will make clear that those efforts are voluntary steps it plans to take domestically that should not imply a binding international commitment.

Back in September, picking up on the rising tide of public anger over health reform, excessive spending, and one-party arrogance, he fashioned a simple, compelling narrative to deal with it: no to a rushed, confusing health-care bill, yes to a freeze on federal spending and to introducing some sunlight into government. Mr. Brown repeated it over and over with the inner confidence that his message would eventually resonate. It did.

We’re seeing the same with climategate and the IPCC. Wouldn’t if just save everyone a lot of time and trouble if Rajenda Pauchari resigned and the United Nations disbanded the IPCC. Neither its head nor its body have any remaining credibility, so why not put it out of its misery?

As Climategate is in danger of being eclipsed by more recent scandals, it may be time to refresh our memories. When 1,000 emails and assorted files were leaked by person or persons unknown, we learned a lot about how climate science gets done. Or undone:

We learned that getting the scary message across to politicians is so important that it justifies hiding the shakiness of the data.

The costs of the trips -- borne by taxpayers -- are difficult to measure, but they're high. When the president uses Air Force One, it costs $100,219 an hour to operate, according to the Air Force. And that's just the president's plane.

There also are cargo planes, used to fly in armored limousines, helicopters, staff and other equipment, as well as the Secret Service. A single Air Force C-17 cargo jet, for example, costs $6,960 an hour, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Cognitive dissonance from Tom Fuller

Can green technology save us from global warming?
There's an assumption in my headline--obviously, the questions isn't worth answering if we don't need to be saved. But I am convinced global warming is a serious problem. Serious enough to be worth the investment in technology to improve how we generate, distribute, consume and conserve energy.

One Amazon reviewer wrote, "Mosher and Fuller do a good job putting the ClimateGate documents in context, and the book is a riveting read. I received my copy yesterday, and find the book to be faithful to the climate war events that I have followed over a period of years. It reports actual email communications of a small group of paleoclimatologists and their roles in perhaps the biggest scientific hoax since Piltdown Man."

PR’ing Industrial Wind: Government and Media versus Common Sense — MasterResource
Wind is, in the final analysis, a faith-based proposition, requiring people to close their minds and clap their hands to revive it from a life and death struggle against unbelief, bringing the technology back from the oblivion that the steam engine consigned it to hundreds of years ago.

One of the issues such wind promotions raise, particularly those from the NREL, is how political our information-assessment government agencies have become. And this indictment includes the National Academy of Science. The media don’t even question this anymore, simply taking it as business as usual.

The politicalization of knowledge, particularly in areas as important to our modernity as energy, is a major unreported story. It has more than immediate cost implications for our wallets, since it ultimately corrupts our base of knowledge and subverts our intellectual integrity, both essential for achieving wisdom and successful democracy.
All American Blogger » Ten Years for Oil? Bad. Ten Years for Nuke Plants? Sounds Good.
So, if a decade is a reason to forego any consideration of drilling for oil in ANWR, why is it not a reason to forget about building nuclear power plants?

In the words of President Obama, let me be clear. I am not opposed to the construction of new nuclear power plants. I am very much for them. But I think the duplicity here by the president in promoting an exercise that will take just as long as a process he and his leftist brethren rejected needs to be highlighted. We need oil just as much as we need electricity from nuclear power.

In reality, this is very easy for him to promote. He knows that any new proposed nuclear power plants would be smothered in red tape, eco-Marxist protests and the usual NIMBY push back.

He loses nothing by pushing it. He knows it will never happen but can position himself as being for it.

He had to go back to 1991 to prop up his faith!; and that he relies on "authorities" -- rather than any facts -- to prop up his faith is the most pathetic thing of all

Monckton re-entered the climate-change fray in 2006, writing two pieces in the Sunday Telegraph criticizing global warming alarmism. The articles caused an immediate stir.

In a world hungry for understandable, reasoned explanations of climate science, Monckton’s greatest gift is his skill as a communicator. Though he is not a climatologist, he is well versed in both the basics and the nuances of the issues surrounding climate change. Typical of his style is this video of Monckton politely explaining the realities of global warming theory to a member of Greenpeace during the Copenhagen climate conference in December.

Your committee should listen not only to CRU scientists, but also to those who have studied and criticised the data collection methods on which the CRU analysis is based, for example Anthony Watts (www.wattsupwiththat.com).

(B) Your Committee should invite Lord Stern to re-work his analysis excluding the presumed additional costs of natural disasters “caused” by climate change. It should also invite a couple of distinguished independent economists to check and comment on Lord Stern’s analysis, and particularly on his choice of a discount rate to evaluate future costs.

Rahmstorf reckons that climate scientists have communicated their work quite well, particularly through the IPCC. While 2010 is the UN year of biodiversity, the biodiversity community has "not yet managed to get as much high-level attention to the biodiversity crisis; it is only now calling to set up something like the IPCC for biodiversity". On the other hand, "climate science could still do a lot better if more climate scientists get involved, take an interest in public understanding of science and educate themselves more about how to effectively work with the media". Rahmstorf reckons that "too many scientists are still stuck in the ivory tower and – for example – shrug off and ignore wrong media reports about climate science, rather than recognizing that public perception matters and that they should not leave the public debate to people with a political agenda".

Steve Janke: More unsettling science in the global warming camp - Full Comment
The scientists' models are better than the warmists' models. Our model says correctly that water vapor is the big player, while your model says (incorrectly) that carbon dioxide is the sole driver.

Wow.

The split has come. The real scientists are no longer counting themselves among the global warming alarmists and are saying so out loud. And they are challenging the warmists with new research.

The avalanche is coming.

What's next? Hey, let's go with another prediction. If the scientists start to shift dramatically away from the global warming orthodoxy, I expect we'll be seeing the editorialists next. I expect that in some short time frame, columnists and pundits who have been cheerleaders for the warmist camp will start issuing semi-apologies. They'll admit to having been perhaps a smidge too keen on believing everything the IPCC had been saying, and a touch too cavalier when it came to mocking the skeptics. They'll take cover behind research like this, saying that it's only now that it can be said that maybe the skeptics were on to something. Whatever. In any case, we'll see if that happens. If and when it does, I'll issue my next prediction.
Feds Freeze Out Frost Fix - Forbes.com
Frost damage to crops is not unusual; it causes American farmers to lose billions of dollars annually. Peaches, plums, citrus and other crops are regularly threatened by frost in the Southeast. California is also susceptible: A January 2007 freeze there cost farmers more than $1 billion in losses of citrus, avocados and strawberries, and a 1990 freeze that caused about $800 million in damage to agriculture resulted in the layoff of 12,000 citrus industry workers, including pickers, packers, harvesters and salespeople. In 2002 lettuce prices around the country went through the roof after an unseasonable frost struck the Arizona and California deserts.

Technology could mitigate much of the damage, but government regulation has placed obstacles in the way of innovative solutions.

US pledges to cut federal government emissions by 28% by 2020 | Environment | guardian.co.uk
Barack Obama used his presidential authority to help advance his climate change [hoax] agenda today, announcing that the US federal government and agencies would cut their giant carbon footprints by 28% by 2020.

The announcement was held up by administration officials as evidence of Obama's commitment to his climate and energy agenda, which has run into opposition in Congress and from coal, oil and manufacturing groups.
...
The cuts will come from across 35 government agencies and departments. The Treasury department pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33%. The department of Defence – which operates 300,000 of those government buildings – pledged to cut its emissions by 34%. However, that effort excludes combat operations, and would cover just 40% of DoD greenhouse gas emissions.

Sutley said government departments across the country were already taking action, installing solar panels and wind turbines. The National Renewable Energy Labs in Denver was aiming to reduce energy use of its data centre by 65%.
Bin Laden, eco warrior | Marcus Brigstocke | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk
It's bad enough when greenies in hairshirts treat climate change as an excuse to discuss compulsory veganism. I shudder when semi-retired socialists use it as the latest wheeze to bring down capitalism. Anyone who's been outgreened by a point-scoring eco bore will know how ugly it can get. But al-Qaida? Any attempt to claim green credentials on their part would be as laughable as oil companies putting pretty mountain-scapes in their adverts. Overpopulation may be the elephant in the room when it comes to talking about sustainability, but no one wants to see Dumbo flown into a building as a solution.

Heavy snow in Colorado: Conference center roof collapses under weight of heavy snow - KDVR
DURANGO, Colo. - One building in southwest Colorado just couldn't take all of the snow the region has received recently. The roof of the 7,000-square-foot ballroom and conference center at the Iron Horse Inn in Durango collapsed from the weight of heavy snow early Thursday.
Utah - Snow destroys Henrieville fire station
HENRIEVILLE, Utah -- Heavy snow has devastated the fire department in Henrieville, Utah.

Snow collapsed the roof of the fire station Thursday morning and bowed the walls of the reinforced-concrete block building.

The fire trucks are a total loss, the back of a Mack truck is completely smashed, and a roof truss went right through another other truck.
It's The Water Vapor, Stupid! | The Resilient Earth
Once again the limitations of our understanding of the mechanisms that control Earth's climate are revealed. Here is a plausible explanation as to why the period from 1980 to 1999 was one of noticeable warming, and why since 2000 things have leveled off or even cooled down a bit. Because the mechanisms that link water vapor to temperature regulation are complex and not well understood the climate change clique concentrated on CO2—and it has become obvious that treating CO2 as a form of planetary thermostat is simply not a viable explanation. It is no wonder that the IPCC's carbon dioxide centric climate models didn't get recent temperature swings right. To steal a phrase from American politics, “It's the water vapor, stupid!”
The greening of Davos | The Call
With this year's "green Davos," the issue of climate change is probably getting a solid third billing after the financial crisis and rising protectionism. Given the general disillusionment with any progress at an international government level, the debate is all tending towards the private sector.
