We (Greedy Capitalists) shall overcome | The City Wire
It was clear the Tilleys of Fort Smith couldn’t go to a museum to simply learn. We had to be preached to because, as noted above, we suck. Straight-forward science and information must now be filtered through the political lens of global warming/climate change to induce guilt for being Greedy Capitalist Uncaring Mother Earth-rapers.

July in Gore's home town: Very cool, with *more* tick-borne diseases
“We’re on track for the fourth-coolest July on record,” National Weather Service meteorologist Bobby Boyd in Nashville said the day before the month ended.
...
“This year seems to be a pretty buggy year,” said Dr. Frank Hale, an entomologist with the UT Agricultural Extension.
...
Ticks are also more plentiful this summer, and Hale said there have been more cases of tick-borne diseases, including at least two deaths involving children.
Keep the champagne on ice regarding global warming
I am particularly concerned about long term trends regarding Arctic ice myself, and the melting of permafrost in the northern latitudes.
Are sunspots changing and will that take us to an Ice Age?
The big story here is not the characteristics of sunspots changing but rather the changing tenor of the professional scientific community to stand up for true scientific debate that has been suppressed for so long. Far too long, in my opinion.
Will you be able to tell your great-grandchildren that you remember liquid water on the surface of the Earth in winter and weren't dead set on cooling the planet?
Democrats have no place to hide from angry public
As the Democrats leave Washington on their August holiday, many are finding that there have no places to hide from people in their districts who are livid over the Stimulus program, Cap and Trade and what they are trying to do to health care in America.
Obamanomics equals disaster for America - VIEWPOINTS - The News Herald
Now we have another hoax on the horizon called the cap and trade bill. In my view this so-called energy bill will totally cripple American business to the point we will no longer be competitive in a global market. It’s obvious to me that we need to protect our environment. However, I do not believe we need to destroy our economy to do so.
Crew Log 51 - Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories
At our last stop in Herschel Island, we met a fisherman who told us the ice was late receding this year, "perhaps later than the last five years." We'll be looking at ice reports with more than passing interest this weekend and early next week.
Ice pockets choking Northern Passage: officials
Despite predictions from a top U.S. polar institute that the Arctic Ocean’s overall ice cover is headed for another “extreme” meltdown by mid-September, the Environment Canada agency monitoring our northern waters says an unusual combination of factors is making navigation more difficult in the Northwest Passage this year after two straight summers of virtually clear sailing.
...
“In the southern route,” Canadian Ice Service officials told Canwest News Service, the agency “has observed more ice coverage than normal. This is partly due to the fact that the ice in the Amundsen Gulf consolidated this past winter, which is something it didn’t do in 2007 and 2008.”

In the central part of the passage where the northern and southern routes merge amid narrowings around Prince of Wales Island, the CIS has observed “greater than normal concentrations of thicker, multi-year ice. This is the result of an increased flow of older ice from the Beaufort Sea into the Canadian Arctic archipelago last year.”

The result, the agency said, is that ice conditions “are delaying any potential navigability of the Northwest Passage this year. This is opposite to what Environment Canada observed in the last week of July in 2007 and 2008.”

Hey, let's improve the weather with an insane, expensive federal program that involves deliberately destroying perfectly good car engines!

Dealers Race to Get Their Clunkers Crushed - The Lede Blog - NYTimes.com
We spent a couple of days earlier this week following the whole complex program, from dealer to scrap heap, and found twists and turns in it that are making it a nightmare now for everyone involved.

The program requires that the clunkers be put out of service for good, so dealers must destroy the engines on cars that are traded in. We watched this process yesterday at the DCH Paramus Honda in Paramus, N.J. It is quite laborious and potentially dangerous. And it certainly is final.
...
Michael Gerrard, director of Columbia Law School’s Center for Climate Change Law, said in a statement that the cash-for-clunker program is not a cost-effective way to reduce fuel use or greenhouse gas emissions. Any energy savings, he said, could take several years to realize, considering the time it takes the fuel savings from a new car to exceed the energy cost used to make

Hot Air » Blog Archive » Resurging Republicans … in Minnesota?
What happened? The CBO began scoring ObamaCare, and the House shoved cap-and-tax down the throats of Republicans. Even after Porkulus, people clung to the belief that Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid represented a moderate middle rather than a radical Left, and that their leadership would focus on prosperity rather than socialism. After June and July, those pretenses disappeared, even in Minnesota.

The whole deal is dependent on local Planning Board, City Council and neighborhood approval.

Weather records are a state secret - Christopher Booker - Telegraph
The idea that temperature records might be a state secret seems strange enough, but when the policies of governments across the world are based on that data it becomes odder still that no outsider should be allowed to see it. Weirdest of all, however, is the Met Office's claim that to release the data would "damage the trust that scientists have in those scientists who happen to be employed in the public sector".

Doesn't the Met Office realise that trust in it has already been damaged enough by its batty predictions of "barbecue summers"? If it wants to restore that trust, it should first come clean about its data, and then reprogramme its computer to give us forecasts that are not skewed by its obsession with global warming – which is not happening.

"In fact, since guillemots require at least an 80-day snow-free summer in which to copulate, ovulate, hatch and fledge their chicks - and there were rarely 80 snow-free days in northern Alaska until the 1960's - they wouldn't even be this far north were it not for warmer temperatures. Expanding their range, playing with the edge of a changing climate, his guillemots, he realized, were tracking the region's snowmelt on an annual basis.
...
But for the scientist and his subjects, the biggest new problems, literally and figuratively, are the polar bears.

"From 1975 to 2002, I saw one bear on this island," he said. "Since 2002, they've been here every year. And last year, they were here every day for my last week on the island, a different bear."

The reason is simple. The pack ice that for all those stated years was within sight of Cooper - and the big, fat, abundant, blubber-coated seals on which they dined and feasted - is now nowhere in view. The bears are hungry. They're swimming to Cooper Island in search of chow.
Ok, so he hardly ever saw polar bears for decades; now he sees them all the time, and from this we're supposed to conclude that carbon dioxide is killing them off?

If they were really starving in 2002, why aren't they dead by now?

For at least 114 years, climate “scientists” have been claiming that the climate was going to kill us…but they have kept switching whether it was a coming ice age, or global warming.
Climate change poised to feed on itself | smh.com.au
Around the world, thousands of scientists have devoted their professional lives to studying the climate. Not centrally organised, they sometimes build temporary affiliations but they remain scientists throughout – that is, they are independent, constantly challenge each other and are committed to searching for truth through objective, independently verifiable evidence.

It's a waste. Environmentally speaking, the money would have been far better spent closing budget shortfalls for mass transit systems or capitalising programmes to weatherise homes. Socially speaking, automobiles produce a lot of unpleasant side effects—including congestion and accidents—and really ought not be subsidised by government (particularly since the policy is doing such a rotten job addressing the one negative externality it's supposed to help with—emissions).

With August looming, the Northwest Passage is still blocked by ice

Cameron Dueck wants to see how climate change is affecting Arctic communities. So he set sail in June from Vancouver with a crew of three others… headed all the way for Halifax, Nova Scotia. [Interview MP3]
Around the 5:50 mark, Dueck admits there is "a little bit more ice than last year" and says he's talked to people who say "certainly you're going to be running into more ice than you would have last year".

Since 1905, according to the BBC, about 110 boats have been through the Northwest Passage (four of them in 2007). Thirty of the 110 were recreational boats.

The Northwest Passage was successfully navigated in 1906, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1944, 1957, 1969, 1977, 1984, 1988, and 2000 (and probably in other years as well).

Jim Magagna, Executive Vice President, Wyoming Stock Growers Association testified on behalf of producers.

Magagna talked about the negative impacts that H.R. 2454 (the "Climate Change Bill") would have on America's farmers and ranchers. Specifically, Magagna expressed concerns about the bill's effect on energy costs. Considering the fact that approximately 45% of agriculture production costs are energy related, these increased costs could push many operations over the edge, forcing ranchers to sell off their land to developers.

"There is nothing green about a rural sub-division as compared to livestock roaming the range," Magagna said.

China's economy has grown so fast that it has added on average an additional 70 gigawatts of power -- roughly equal to the power-generating capacity of France -- each year for the past few years.

Cash-for-clunkers was such a great idea, it’s apparently running out of cash.
David Suzuki Foundation calls on premiers to take strong leadership to address climate change
Why interview someone from the David Suzuki Foundation?

The David Suzuki Foundation has a longstanding track record as a credible source of analysis on science-based policy measures to address climate change.
Environmentalist, author Bill McKibben calls for concerted action on environment
Bill McKibben, environmentalist, author, evirnonmentalist and founder of 350.org, took the stage at the American Center yesterday and stated in measured but forceful words that strong, powerful action needs to be taken very, very quickly if we want to maintain the climate we are accustomed to.
...
McKibben noted that, each summer in the Arctic, an area of ice, the size of California melts away, due to global warming. He added that there is now 25 per cent less ice in the Arctic than at any time in human history or even during pre-historic times.

He cited the 200 per cent increase in dengue fever in Asia since 2000 as an example of how problems associated with warm, wet environments are increasing. He himself had contracted dengue fever in Bangladesh several years ago, he said.
[Two full years after CO2 hysteria peaked]: Fujitsu Joins Japan Climate [Scam] Leaders’ Partnership
30 Jul 2009 , Tokyo : Fujitsu today announced its participation in the Japan Climate Leaders’ Partnership (Japan-CLP). Japan-CLP is Japan’s first corporate network to look at climate change from a business perspective and be proactive at bringing about a sustainable, low-carbon society.
Let's Put an End to Sarah Palin-Style Capitalism - Naomi Klein
I almost feel like we've been given a last chance, some kind of a reprieve. I try not to be apocalyptic, but the global warming science I read is scary. This economic crisis, as awful as it is, pulled us back from that ecological precipice that we were about to drive over with Sarah Palin and gave us a tiny bit of time and space to change course.

Republican Congressman Wally Herger’s district at the north end of the San Joaquin Valley is one of the richest specialty crop areas in the world, with prunes, nuts and rice.

Felde: Herger says “cap and trade” in his district would give growers in India and China an unfair advantage. They aren't bound by energy regulations.
Ambrose: Where is Obama's transparency? | ScrippsNews
Take a glance, for instance, at the Environmental Protection Agency. According to a Wall Street Journal op-ed piece, Alan Carlin, a senior analyst with EPA's National Center for Economics, had the temerity along with a colleague to produce a paper casting doubt on global warming theory and especially on the reliability of computer models predicting catastrophe down the pike. His boss made it clear that the thesis was contrary to policy and the paper would not be allowed out the door.

I missed the liberal outcry on this, as opposed, say, to what we heard when NASA's global warming alarmist James Hansen whined that his press releases might be reviewed before being released during the Bush administration. No such reviews ever took place, which hardly stopped one outraged commentator from complaining that we were now in an era reminiscent of Josef Stalin's viciously controlling discourse in the Soviet Union. Hansen, the Journal piece reminds us, had given hundreds of speeches on the terror of warming, many of them during the Bush years.

Look next at what's been happening in Congress, votes on nation-altering legislation roughly as transparent as a stonewall is transparent, last-minute concoctions of 1,000 pages and more that not a single member of Congress could conceivably have had time to read. For that matter, few if any members could have had a grasp of any number of important elements in these bills even through the second-hand summaries, which is to say, the democratic process was rendered meaningless.

When the worm finally turns, it really gets itself into a flat-out spin. More and more scientists have just about had it up to here with the rubbish being put out as the ‘consensus’ on man-made global warming.

When this hysteria has finally passed there will be an accounting. Those who sold out science for fame, fortune and flim-flam will be made to pay.
Policy Peril Segment 3 - Hurricanes | OpenMarket.org
To wrap up, no consensus has been reached about the possible influence of global warming on hurricanes.
Hot Air » Blog Archive » Cash for clunkers runs out of money … after one week; Update: Feds scramble to save program
Unlike pretty much every other Hopenchange economic policy, not only did this one work, it worked better than expected. And yet, I can’t help thinking there’s a lesson in the fact that a centrally planned program budgeted to run through the end of October went bust in, er, seven days. That’s some miscalculation — not unlike the miscalculation that promised unemployment no higher than eight percent once we pinched that $787 billion loaf known as the stimulus. And naturally, the program came buried in so much bureaucracy and paperwork that some dealers gave up on it despite the amazing business it drummed up.
Rudd’s tick-tick-tick deceit | Herald Sun Andrew Bolt Blog
The truth is not only that the scheme will kill jobs, will fail to halt our growth in emissions and won’t make a blind bit of difference to world temperatures anyway. Fact is, even some of the world’s leading warming hysterics admit there’s no urgency at all to the vote, whatever Kevin Rudd so dishonestly claims
