It's not surprising that this administration is putting off any action on greenhouse gas emissions. California has been leading the way on addressing climate change and we will continue to lead despite Washington because we know the threat of global warming is so immediate.
Four scientists, four scenarios, four more or less similar conclusions without actually saying it outright — the global warming trend is done, and a cooling trend is about to kick in. The implication: Future energy price response is likely to be significant.

CALGARY, Alberta - Privately held Enhance Energy Inc said Thursday it plans to build Alberta's first major carbon dioxide pipeline system to ship the greenhouse gas to old oil fields, where it can boost output.
Enhance said the pipeline will be located in central Alberta, where it will capture carbon dioxide emissions from an oil sands upgrading plant planned by North West Upgrading Inc, and a fertilizer plant operated by Agrium Inc.
The move comes two days after Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach announced C$2 billion (US$1.98 billion) in funding for carbon capture and storage projects, a move lauded by companies and industry organizations planning to develop ways to cut emissions amid booming industrial activity.
The more I hear about the federal government’s love affair with carbon emissions trading (and I shiver when I even think of this topic) the more I reckon, we are the most gullible nation in the entire world.
This carbon trading concept is complicated and rortable; how easy will it be to inaccurately calculate carbon emissions which - given financial repercussions - will cause all sorts of drama.
But, actually, forget all of that. Maybe we can establish a foolproof system, which we can all follow, but the main reason I say that we’re gullible is that the real polluters, the nations whose cities are black on sunny days, are India and China.
The latest climate models are built on the assumption that aerosols have their biggest influence by seeding natural clouds, which reflect sunlight. However, the team found that radiation dropped only slightly on cloudy days, suggesting that the main impact of aerosols is to block sunlight directly. Ironically the climate models assumed aerosols cooled the earth and created the cooling from the 1940s to 1970s. Now it appears that was wrong. The models only worked because they inserted and tweaked up the importance of the aerosol cooling in the middle of the last century. Modelers are not going to like this one. They may have to consider something radical like giving more credit to the sun or oceans.
In prior decades when pollution - particulates and hydrocarbon based haze and pollution were deemed a health problem and the goal was to develop clean burning engines and factories that only put out the natural gases - water vapor and carbon dioxide. Well we succeeded. That is until the greenhouse theory caught favor that said water vapor and carbon dioxode were bad for the planet and we have to stop at least the carbon part which was causing warming. Now suddenly much of the warming is due to the fact we cleaned up the atmosphere. Seems like the protein vs carbs vs fats good versus bad arguments played put again this time in climate.

“It’s just the right thing to do,” says Knapp, 41, of Greendale. “Every politician I see out on the stump has big plans for addressing climate change … but those plans never seem to include leading by example. I want to look back in November and know that I was part of the solution rather than part of the problem.”
Knapp arrived at his campaign’s estimated carbon footprint by running projected travel mileage and electricity use through several online footprint calculators. “Then,” he says, “I added a fudge factor to account for things like printing and shipping of campaign materials.” He purchased a six ton Verified Emissions Offset credit for about $40 from a firm which in turn invests in emissions-reducing projects such as generation of electricity from landfill gas in Illinois. He plans to revisit his calculations in October and purchase additional offsets if necessary to maintain carbon neutrality.
In 2006, there were predictions in the media that global warming would cause 2007 to be the hottest year on record.
Now think about it, what have you read in the media in 2008 about this? Well, nothing actually. Why?
Well, the answer is simple – because 2007 turned out to be the coolest year recorded for the last 30 years. This, the public was not told.
The public was also not told that, since the warm year of 1998, there has been continuous cooling. What the public is told is that, during the twentieth century, there was a global temperature increase of 0,6 oC.
This is true, but what is left out is that most of the warming took place from 1920 to 1940 and that global temperature fell from 1940 to 1970, prompting announcements in the mid 1970s that a global ice age was about to pounce on us.
During all this, the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere continued to rise. In fact, atmospheric carbon dioxide (C02) continued to increase after 1940, while atmospheric cooling was taking place. Should that not make people think a bit?
Should people not ponder the issue of whether the theory that man-made C02 is responsible for global warming is actually correct?
But all is not well in Wind Subsidy-land.
Since Congress didn't renew the wind subsidy as part of the 2007 energy bill, it will expire at the end of this year unless reauthorized.
Subsidies are perhaps more important to the wind industry that wind itself. Without them, wind can't compete against fossil fuel-generated power. As pointed out by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (July 9), "In 1999, 2001 and 2003, when Congress temporarily killed the credits, the number of new turbines dropped dramatically."
It's little wonder that Pickens is waging a $58 million PR campaign to promote his plan. If it works, his short-term gain will be saving the tax credit and his wind farm investment. In the long-term, he stands to line his already overflowing pockets with hard-earned taxpayer dollars.
What will the rest of us get from this T. Boone-doggle? That's anybody's guess, but it probably won't be cheaper energy, energy independence or a cleaner environment.
Supply and demand is very straight forward and Texas is suffering from a supply that cannot keep up with demand. My electricity rates have increased 300% in the last four years and I mostly blame global warming propaganda and the hysteria involved. As result of this hysteria, coal-generated electricity, the cheapest form of energy in Texas, has been vilified, resulting in increased natural gas usage. This, in turn, has caused a huge spike in natural gas prices in recent years.
So I picked up the phone and dialed a senior McCain official to make sure these old eyes hadn’t missed it. Sure enough, on deep background, this senior McCain advisor told me I was correct: no cap-and-trade. In other words, this central-planning, regulatory, tax-and-spend disaster, which did not appear in Mac’s two recent speeches, has been eradicated entirely — even from the detailed policy document that hardly anybody will ever read.
The Hadley Centre’s spin effort isn’t exaggerating the data (far from it), nor is it plain wrong — the true figures are on the site. But the Centre is doing everything it can to mislead the public in hopes that the planet will start warming again before the peasants figure out that, maybe, the “consensus” climate science prophets are, in fact, plain wrong.
In fact the world is colder that it was 20 years ago, undermining the notion that carbon dioxide is causing runaway global warming.
Those tendentious ads on TV about carbon footprints are part of the most relentless propaganda campaign in human history to promote an ideology that now seems to be based on very shaky foundations.

THE Rudd Government's climate change adviser has rounded on Michael Costa after the NSW Labor Treasurer warned that "Chicken Little" politics were pervading the global-warming debate.
However, three state governments joined Mr Costa yesterday in supporting compensation for electricity generators under an emissions trading scheme.
Ross Garnaut hit back at Mr Costa after his attack in The Australian yesterday, and there were calls from within the Labor caucus for Mr Costa to be disciplined by Premier Morris Iemma.
Professor Garnaut said Mr Costa's position as a climate change sceptic had been known for some time.
"The NSW Treasurer is a well-known denier of the science (of climate change)," he said.
For one thing, the carbon cycle is just one of dozens, maybe hundreds of factors affecting the planet’s climate. It isn’t the “principal” driver of climate. And that means humans can’t be the “principal” driver of climate, either, as Al Gore charges, since our contribution to the carbon cycle is only 5 per cent a year; nature supplies 95 per cent.
A new regulatory regime from our environmental bureaucrats would grind the economy to a halt.
Of course, we all know how these things work: creative accounting. The Enron guys were saints compared to the accounting games played in the carbon accounting and offset world. Harvard will probably say that "Well, we were planning to build a massive coal-powered electricity plant right in the middle of Harvard Yard, and by cancelling the project, we have reduced our emissions 30% over what they would have been and therefore made our goal. Don't laugh - the UN and EU are doing EXACTLY this every day.
One of our major gripes with Environmentalism concerns the claims made by its adherents that it is some sort of popular, grass-roots movement. Time and again, polls suggest otherwise. And yet these polls are rarely, if ever, reported in terms of the undemocratic nature of Environmentalism as it is foisted upon reluctant electorates. Rather, they are presented as evidence that the public are unthinking, selfish morons brainwashed by scheming 'deniers'.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday shut the door on expanding oil and gas drilling beyond areas that have already been approved for energy exploration, drawing a clear distinction from her counterparts in charge of the Senate.

Through its influence in the media and government (both bureaucracy and congress), the Greens effectively abolished nuclear power, curtailed domestic oil production, and left the American energy industry in the comatose state in which it abides to this day. Nor this was an error or overreaction - it was a deliberate effort to fulfill the Green agenda.
What is the nature of this agenda? Greens were much more open about it during the early years of the movement. (As for example in the utopian novel Ecotopia.) The end point of all Green efforts is a kind of Edenic state in which humans exist in "partnership" with nature. In which humanity is simply another species. In which the human "footprint" (a purely Green concept with no literal meaning) is reduced to a minimum. A world which has returned in large part to a pre-industrial state, where whatever small amounts of power are needed are provided by solar and wind. Where every last damn item is recycled. A kind of universal Northern California, where all living things from spirochete to grizzly exist in harmony under the cloak of Gaia.
It seems increasingly unlikely that the fundamental conflict between the developed nations and the emerging economies of the developing world about collective climate targets can be resolved anytime soon. The time has come for policy makers around the world to ponder whether a new global climate agreement no longer based on mandatory and legally binding emissions targets is a viable compromise.
"I was truly taken aback by Dr. Hansen's refusal to debate Dr. Michaels," said Mr. Katz. "I gave Dr. Hansen a blank check to come to the College, and still he refused. Dr. Hansen's suggestion that oil executives who advance global warming skepticism be tried for 'crimes against humanity' and subsequent refusal to debate one of the most prominent academic skeptics is suspicious and unfortunate, to say the least. I still continue to hope that Dr. Hansen realizes the error of his decision and does eventually decide to debate Dr. Michaels. The William and Mary community deserves an open and honest debate about the implications of climate change."
Count Libertarian U.S. Senate candidate Sonny Landham, of Ashland, among those not convinced by arguments of a global warming threat. In a position paper circulated by Landham's campaign today, he argues global warming proponents are aiming to harm Americans and touts several mathematical calculations in an effort to prove the ice-laden continent of Antarctica can never be fully melted.
"Global warming, or its re-invention, climate change, is the greatest fraud ever perpetrated upon the people of the United States and the world," said Landham in a statement released today. "The intent of the global warming movement is to lower the standard of living of Americans, by increasing the cost of living and the cost of doing business in the United States. This will drive even more good-paying jobs to other countries."
